Stinky Clothes, Even Though They're Clean!

My clothes get washed, put in the dryer in the same day and our washer and dryer are inside the house. My clothes keep smelling like a bit mildewy. It's really frustrating especially since we already stink down here with the weather being on it's 17th day of over 100 degrees! Can I wash the washer? Any suggestions on how to help. I use purex detergent (which I've ALWAYS used) and dryer sheets in the dryer....

Oh, and how can I make my daugher's tinkled-in panties not retain that pee smell? Wash them in something else? Thanks ladies!

What can I do next?

my mom's front loader washer had this problem & it was cause there was mold around the seals so she cleaned it & then left the door open everytime it was done running...my top loading washer never has this problem unless i leave clothes in & then i have to let them soak in vinegar & baking soda...then I also run vinegar & baking soda through the washer with nothing in it after

add a 1/4 cup of vinegar to your wash. It works really well and your clothes won't smell like vinegar either.

Yes, you can wash your washer....run your washing machine with HOT WATER and bleach ONLY...

Leave the LID UP when there are NO CLOTHES in it - allowing it to "breathe"..

If that doesn't work - we have the Sears Protection Plan and have them come out once a year to do the maintenance on it...they pull everything apart and clean it....

On the panties - use vinegar and baking soda - sprinkle baking soda on the affected area, then put the vinegar on to set the reaction...let the vinegar soak for about 5 minutes then wash....

I add vinegar and a few drops of lavendar essential oil to my wash, in the "fabric softener" dispenser. It works fabulously. Even icky smelly towels come out fresh and clean smelling. Works everytime!

Tide with Febreeze Sport makes our clothes smell wonderful! Someone on here recommended it to me and I love it.
Now, of course if there is an issue with your washer needing to be cleaned you will want to take care of that. You have gotten some other great suggestions too. I have just had a really great experience with this kind of Tide. I have also started using the automatic soak feature on my washer and sometimes that 15-30 minute soak makes a world of difference!
Good luck!

Yes, just saw a commercial the other day for a product just out specifically to "wash the washer". Sorry, didn't pay attention to the brand.

Also, baking soda cuts odors...maybe put some soap and baking soda and let your washer do a cycle?

You could also do a little research into your water. We got a whole-house water filter and it helped my laundry smell better. Hard water may rinse differently than soft water. You may ask your neighbors what they think of the water. Just a suggestion ... :)

Is it a front load washer? My sisters does that. I think it gets mildew around the seal. Everyone else's suggestions about vinegar, bleach, and special products to wash the washer sound great.

We use Rockin' Green Amonia Bouncer for cloth diapers to clean out the machine. Pour some in and let the machine soak! Come by the store and I will give you some to try. Works on underwear too!

I think this can happen too when you over-load it.. so when it's washing , it's not moving around enough to wash well and or rinse. Additionally, if you are using the dryer with too many clothes in it, they can't dry all the way thru..

Vinegar and baking soda will help eliminate odor form your clothes! Easy and non-toxic.
This is a common problem if you have a front loading washer. If you do, you should leave the door open to get some ventilation. Also, I have just recently seen a commercial for a washing machine cleaner from tide. It is specifically made for front loading washers and mildew.

Clorox and Tide both just came out with products to "wash" the washers. My front loader has started doing this. Because it's HE, if the towels are not super dry when they come out of the dryer, they will smell like that.

Anyway, the clorox washer (under 2.50 for two uses, I think) wash is next to the bleach in a small bottle with a black label. It's liquid. The Tide (a little more- three packets) is powder but it is next to the dryer sheets and bars.

Are you drying the clothes long enough? When the weather gets warm and clothes are not completely dry...they take on a musky smell.
