Stocking Stuffer Ideas for a 12-Year-old Boy?

i still do stockings for my husband, my grown kids and my gay brother!
being particular about candy is great. so get him a fair amount of the stuff he likes.
magazines about his passions.
a book you'd like him to read over the holidays.
hygiene stuff like deodorant and body spray. tweens groove on that stuff.
music cds, or i-tunes gift card.
goofy holiday socks, and graphic t-shirts.
chia pet!
set of colored sharpies. everyone loves them, for no logical reason.
earbuds.
pretty much anything from geek.com.

I love love love stockings!!! I would rather have my stocking than any other gift, and I am...ahem...well over 12 :)

Maybe movie tickets, a comic book or paper back, tubes of nuts or beef jerky if he likes that type of snack, skateboard Christmas ornament?

We'll never stop.
Not only do our neighbors do stocking for everyone in the house - the pets all have their own stocking too.

My daughter is 20 and it is a big deal to have the stocking at our house!!

I always went with age appropriate things but a favorite is always cash. I roll up assorted bills separstely and tie a red bow around them, mani/pedi items. Gift cards, favorite snacks and candies.

There's no reason you have to stop and don't stress about the talk, that's an ongoing process, never a one time discussion unless you opt out of it and the children ask questions elsewhere.

To be honest, I think I'm going with an iTunes gift card in the stocking this year for my older one. Can you use a giftcard on the STEAM site? Otherwise, I put in one of the M&M filled plastic candy canes and socks.

ETA: I don't think it's odd to do a stocking for an older child. Of course. when I visit my mom at Christmastime, she still does a stocking for me - just some chocolates in it, but still, I love getting my stocking :)

My boys get things like deodorant, toothbrush, toothpaste, Chapstick, Lego Mini-Figure, tree decorations, gift cards (for Tim Hortons, 7-11, McDonalds, Subway etc), money, Rubicks Cube, Slinky, Silly Putty, ear buds, pencils, pens, Sharpies, nail clippers, mini flash lights, head lamp, Mad Libs, hair products (wax, paste, gel), gum, candy, chocolate, polished stones and the list goes on and on. I can't imagine stopping the stockings at any age. The stockings are my favourite part of the gift giving. They are so fun for the whole family! When I was a little girl I actually looked forward to oranges, nuts, quarters, a can of smoked oysters and a jar of olives in my stocking!

I just got my kids Makey Makey, which is a circuit board kit for making different digital games and controllers. For example, you can turn a bunch of bananas into a piano or clay into a game controller. If he's into STEAM education and games, he'd like this. It's more a gift than a stocking stuffer - it's not cheap - but it's small and could fit into a stocking.

aftershaves, if he's into marvel movies or star wars then things that go with that, beef jerky/slim jims or snacks and any soda pop he likes, cool pens or pencils, you could start a tradition of a new high quality tool in his stocking each year, you could get a videotape about how to skateboard or a book of how to draw or a gaming mouse... my daughter collects rubber ducks and marvel stuff so even though she's 16 it's still pretty easy

My almost 12 year old son is getting a pair of retro sunglasses he wants in his stocking. Here are my other ideas: candy. A toothbrush. Fun striped boy socks. New earbuds. cheap stretchy gloves. A magazine he likes. Pack of thank you cards. Flossers. A deck of cards. He is really into playing cards with us right now and our pack of cards is shot! A small game I found in the game section of Target. It comes in a tiny tin. I forget the name. There were a BUNCH of tiny game things that look fun. Hope that gives you some ideas.

could you wrap a personal coupon such as "one extra hour of video games" or tickets to a cool place such as SF exploratorium (or similar place that works for your budget)?

edit: I'm about 40 and I still have a stocking. Why stop? It is fun.

We will always do stockings for our whole family...it's fun!! Our kids always get the following: an orange, a toothbrush, candy (their liking), a gift card (this year it's Starbucks, GameStop, and Dick's), a book, Bath and Body Works (even for our two boys...they like the Noir body wash), and a small something else (this year an EOS lipbalm for our daughter and a pack of Oyos football players for the boys).

My daughter is 12 and the boys are 8 and 10...but this doesn't vary much from year to year.

My son is almost 12, and he and his friends love crazy socks. He also loves the old-school soda that you can find at Cracker Barrel. I only buy it for him at Christmas, so it's a real treat. My son also loves art, so cool pens, pencils, and paints work well for stockings, too.

How about a gift card to attach to his Steam account? My daughter uses it too.

When I am not sure I will put in little everyday items (toothbrush, socks, etc.). I have also put in pencils, pens, sticky note pads, things like that.

Or since he's learning to skateboard, if you go to a store that sells skateboard equipment (or look online), there are lots of small tools that skateboarders need (little specialized wrenches to tighten up the wheels, etc). A sports store that sells skateboard equipment could guide you.

Cool stickers for the bottom of the skateboard? Elbow pads or knee pads?

If he likes Steam, maybe he will enjoy learning about computers. Maybe a book about creating video game graphics?

A Lego set - the ones that involve the more complex ones that involve engineering.

I have a skateboarder too. My son asked for a DVD on skateboarding and skateboarding wax, and stickers from a site called the shred quarters, but I bet you can get those things on multiple sites. They also have a skateboarding tool that my son asked for. Maybe a little pricy for a stocking, but it wouldn't hurt to look. Outside of that, gum, floss, toothbrush, mechanical pencils, pens, pad of paper, some fun little toys like a parachute guy (fun for all ages), retro rubix cube, magic eight ball, etc.

My son just turned 13. He likes Skate 3, I think it's on the PlayStation 3. And of course because Star Wars is coming out, he wants all things Star Wars. Maybe you can get him a fun T-shirt? Or skateboarding DVD's? We are cutting back on the stocking stuff this year. Just getting them some of their favorite snacks and drinks and candy and a couple other things. Maybe ask him what he would like in general? Good luck.

Well, I just have to say that we stopped doing stockings when the kids were in elementary school. Once they figure out he whole Santa thing the stockings sort of went by the wayside...lol.

I would say get him some video games then. I can't imagine trying to do things like you mentioned. In our kids stockings we did an orange, girls got hair stuff, play makeup, stuff like that, small tokens. The boys got Hot Wheels, marbles, and I think we did age 3 and above toys in them until they were a good 3 years old.

Sorry I'm not much help. Our stockings were not expensive things that cost as much as you're mentioning.

My son loves stationary items - erasers, paper clips, post it notes, pencils, sharpies, gel pens. Other family stocking stuffers - chap stick, socks, pocket warmers (those warming envelopes you break and they generate heat, some are rechargeable), glowsticks, chocolate oranges (the ones you smash to break into slices), mini flashlights.
