Stories About Tandem Nursing

There is so little out there that I have found about tandem nursing. Have any of you done it? Has it worked? How do you make sure the baby gets enough food and the toddler isn't jealous/possessive? I don't even know if I'm asking the right questions. Are there special diets? Also, any reading that you would recommend would be great. I would like to have a second child (my daughter is 14 months now) and if my daughter hasn't chosen to wean yet, I would like to tandem breast feed. Note that I also work full-time (since my daughter was 3 months old) and continue to pump to this day. I expect, though, that soon my daughter will only be feeding for bed time and in the early morning (2x per day). But would she want to feed more when she sees her brother/sister nursing all day as an infant? Thanks!

What can I do next?

I was just reading about this on a yahoo group I'm on - tons of the women had done it successfully. A number of women said they thought it helped with the transition to big brother/big sister without jealousy. They recommended "Adventures in Tandem Nursing" as a resource. Sorry - don't remember the author's name. I would search yahoo groups - I bet there's one on extended/tandem nursing that would be super helpful. I think it's great that you want to - good luck TTC!

Some great books are: "Adventures in Tandem Nursing," by Hilary Flower; "Mothering Your Nursing Toddler," by Norma Jane Bumgarner; and La Leche League's "The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding." Also, LLL meetings are great places to learn more from other moms. They have nightime meetings in San Marino on the 3rd Tuesday at 7pm, and daytime ones in Pasadena on the last Thursday at 10am.
It is definitely worth it; I've done it with three, no four sets of children (I have seven).

Hi there. Congratulations on thinking ahead about how to meet the needs of two little ones: the emotional needs of a toddler that can be so well met by continuing to nurse as well as the nutritional needs of the baby. Probably your best source of info is La Leche League (as mentioned below). They have a great website: http://www.lalecheleague.org

They have several books that address nursing an older baby, nursing through pregnancy, and tandem nursing, including the ones mentioned below.

You can also search their site to find groups near you, where you can gets lots of emotional and practical support from moms who have "been there, done that."

Good luck!

I tandem nurse my twins, I know that my son is a better eater over my daughter. He gets right to business and she decides to play, look at her brother, or look at the walls. But then other times she is an amazing eater. It will work you just have to get the right number of pillows figure out what place works best, and realize it is going to be a lot of trial and error. Then one day it will work out perfectly. I would also look at the LLL web page there is always a ton of resources on there. Good luck
