Storing Milk

Once my milk has been in the fridge and i warm it up, how long can it be out on the counter before baby eats. Sometimes i get it ready and he is not quite ready himself to eat or i like to warm it before we are leaving the house knowing he is going to eat while we are gone. I know fresh milk can be out for 4-6 hours but i'm talking about milk that was previously pumped then placed in the fridge, then warmed.

What can I do next?

Pumped milk can be stored at room temp for 6-8 hours (not just 4-6). I would guess if you warmed it and had it 4-6 hours later it would be fine. If you can pump before you leave, it should be okay until baby eats.

Good websites to research:
La Leche League: http://www.llli.org/nb.html
KellyMom: http://www.kellymom.com/bf/index.html
WomensHealth.gov: http://www.womenshealth.gov/breastfeeding/

If you are with your baby while away from home, I encourage you to nurse instead of giving a bottle. There are ways to do it so nothing shows.

Congratulations and Blessings to You!! {Beautiful Baby!!}

Check the La Leche League web site. unrefridgerated it's 6-8 hours. I don't think it matters that it was previously refridgerated. Milk in the fridge will last up to 8 days, in the freezer up to 6 months. So if you haven't started a freezer stash you may want to. I have over a month stashed in my freezer, I'm running out of room lol.

freshly pumped, never cooled in a fridge, can be left out up to 10 hours according to recent studies.

However the time frame for reheated milk is MUCH less, two hours max, so don't warm it till you need it, or only heat a bit at a time. Now the two hours means it starts losing nutritional value NOT that it is going to get germs in it or be bad to drink. It just won't be as good as it was freshly pumped or newly warmed up. Therefore you can still use it, it will still give your baby fats, and nutrients and almost all the good stuff, and not have germs or bacteria in it, but it will lose some of the good stuff with each bit of time that passes.

With formula it goes bad in that time frame, as in yucky, ew, gross, your kid will be puking it back up cause it's spoiled. You wouldn't get to the spoiled part with breast milk for a dozen hours.

If I remember correctly, it think it was somewhere around 6 hours, but I remember reading 10 hours in one book. I was always too nervous and wouldn't let it sit out for more than a couple of hours. I always used the Le Leche League when I had questions regarding breastfeeding.

Once you warm it, I think it is two hours...
