Strange Discharge

I had the same problem but my little one was very young. I could not breast feed her..... Unless there is another problem you should be fine but I would go to the doctor anyway

Hey J. I doubt if you have anything to worry about. The longer you nurse the longer it takes to completely dry up. I nursed till my kids were two, they just liked it so much and I did to. Two years later and I would still leak. I had a greenish yellow discharge to but my obgyn said that it was normal. Now on the cracked nipple and bleeding thing that is probally something that happened from her sucking hard. The same thing happened with my daughter she caught thrush and my breasts caught it too. My obgyn told me that it happens alot with breast feeding because we don't sterilize our breast like we do bottles and with frequent feedings it can cause
thrush. My doctor had medicine in his office that he sent home with me and wrote my daughter a script. Good luck

Get yourself to Whole Foods and buy their MotherLove nipple cream. It's mostly olive oil and beeswax, and it is extremely soothing. Lanolin cream always made things worse for me, but this stuff rocks. Only drawback is that the tiny little jar is almost $10. They sometimes have it at the nursing store on Lamar also. (Special Addition)

Keep your appointment with the doctor; yellow discharge needs to be addressed with something else. The MotherLove stuff just treats the redness/peeling/bleeding.

I would think that it might be a yeast infection. They will usually give you a cream for it. It has been a while since mine have breastfed, so I can't remember the exact name of the cream, but it is a common thing so the doc will know exactly what it is.

To me, it sounds a bit like thrush. Does your daughter have little white spots inside her mouth? If so, thrush is the culprit. If she does have it, she'll need to be on an antifungal medicine, as well as yourself. I caught thrush and it was awful! My nipples itched, peeled and burned for about 2 weeks until it finally went away. My OB/GYN prescribed an antifungal cream for me to apply to my nipples after every nursing session, which soothed my nipples and made the thrush go away. I didn't ooze anything, but everything else you wrote sounds similar to thrush. Hope this was helpful!

Well. With my second child, I only breastfed for a month. With my first it was only two months. But I have to say, with my first, when we quit, we quit. But with my second, even after we quit, I noticed that when he cried in the middle of the night, I would leak, even after about 3 or 4 months of not breastfeeding. So I have to agree that sometimes your body keeps on going even though you don't think you are.

I had something similar happen to me. My doctor said sometimes it has something to do with your pituitary gland. Mine turned out to be nothing and eventually went away.Mine showed up when my son was 3 years old.

J., with my son, I breastfed until he was almost two. (He just loved breastfeeding and so did I.) He was five before I finally quite producing milk although greatly reduced and maybe an ounce or so a day. Even after I quit having letdown episodes, I would still have a yellowish and sometimes greyish discharge. I talked to my OB/GYN and he said it was normal for my body and not to worry about it, but I could take Vitamin E to stope the production (that is when the yellowish stuff started happening). Now with my daughter, she started trying to wean herself from the breast at nearly 6 months old and finally succeeded at 8 1/2 months old. She just flat out refused to nurse. My supply kept shrinking even though I pumped whenever I could. It just wasn't enough. At 8 months when she just would not nurse anymore period (and I tried everything) I gave up. I completely quit producing in roughly a month. Now, here is the real kicker. I am NOT pregnant, but every now and again, if my emotions (good or bad) are running high, I will leak milk. That only started recently after a year of nothing. I am thinking it is hormonal.

I would certainly mention it to your doctor, but I don't think it is anything to worry about. Please let me know if I am wrong.

My ob told me that women will continue to produce milk long (as in a year or so) after they wean. I got a milk blister and a plugged duct 6 months after weaning gradually. You'll want to keep an eye out for something similar especially if you had to stop abruptly. I'm sure the nurse will be able to help you though.
