My son is 5 mos old. He's been with the stuffy nose
ever since he was born. I've tried everything and nothing
seems to work. I hope someone has an answer for me.
Thanks

Hi M. M,

It sounds like sinus. I have a wellness home and it addresses the whole body as one.

If you want more info let me know.

Unfortunately there's not really any medicine you can give him at that age. The best thing I've found is the Little Noses Stuffy Nose kit. Use the nasal aspirator to clear out his nose and the saline drops to also help clear it up.

If that still doesn't work, you should probably call his pediatrician to see if they have any other suggestions.

Probably a deviated septum.. have him checked for that.

The first thing that came to mind was if you're breastfeeing, maybe an allergy to something you're eating, Dairy could be the culprit. I switched to soymilk when breastfeeding my second child who seemed to have a dairy allergy then.
Also consider external exposures, household cleaning products, or something being used on laundry. I can suggest some non-toxic products if you're interested.

I'm assuming that you've had him checked with the Dr. :o) So I will respond with the assumption that he's not sick or anything........

Try elevating his head throughout the day. Make sure he's not always laying flat. His head should try to be up over his chest (like we would raise an injury over our heart)....this helps keeping everything draining downward and helps prevent ear infections. Obvioiusly you can't do this at night because of all the sleeping "rules" to prevent SIDs.

I've used a car seat, pillows, and whatever else in the past to try to keep my congested boys propped up.

Also, they have those plug-in vaporizers. If you turn it on about 1 hour before bed, then your little guy will go to sleep easier with that vapor in his room. They also have Vicks Vapor Pads that you can peel and stick to the OUTSIDE of his pajamas on his chest area to breath in the vapors while he sleeps. That has helped also.

All those things working together should help within a few days :O) Unless, of course, it's something else.

Good Luck!

Have you spoken with the pediatrician about it?

It could be a few things. He could be having a hard time fighting off a bacterial/viral infection that is causing the suffiness, he could have allergies, it could be a physical condition needing a specialist (ENT) to take a look at it.

Your pediatrician/other moms will likely recommend saline drops, a nasal aspirator, and a humidifier. Otherwise, I'm at a loss.

My daughter had a stuffy nose (full of snot all the time, actually) for the first 14 months or so of her life. Our peditrician said some babies just have a stuffy nose when they're babies and they out grow it. Sure enough, no more stuffy nose. I don't know about your son, but my daughter almost always had snot (as in bugers, sorry to be so vivid) in her nose. Believe me, most other moms would make comments about how she needed her nose wiped, etc...her snot was especially sticky and her nostrils (obviously) VERY small. She HATED have her nose wiped and it was hard to get it actually cleaned out and ALWAYS invovled a fight with her. The only time I really worked hard at it was right after a warm bath (in the bath usually) before bedtime. She was usually able to breathe fine and being upright during the day didn't seem to matter. Honestly, the doctor wasn't concerned and had a term for it.

I'm not saying you shouldn't check out all the things the other moms have suggested, you certainly should ask the doctor. I guess I'm just saying it might be a snotty nose thing that he'll out grow and while it's a pain to deal with, it's only temporary, at least, I hope so.

Good luck.

Hi, have you tried Hyland's C-Plus tablets? They're all natural and work great. Found at natural food stores, like EC Natural in El Cerrito. Also, as several others recommended, try saline solutions like Stuffy Noses or Xlear. Hope that helps. Take care

Have you tried saline drops? That can help to break up stubborn/dry hardened mucus so you can then suck it out with a hospital type syringe bulb. Also, try a little bit of baby Vick's vapor rub on baby's chest to help with any congestion. But not too much.....it has a strong smell and you don't want to bother baby with too much. Some people try a humidifier. That never worked for us but you never know. Good luck!

If you are breastfeeding, it could be an allergy to something you are eating. My first thought was dairy.
Dairy creates a lot of mucus, weather you are allergic to it or not.

If you feed formula it could be something in the formula itself. Soy is estrogenic, and estrogen can cause inflammed blocked nostrils.

It could be an allergy to something in your house. Maybe an animal, a beauty product you use,(hairspray, perfume?) someone smoking, or burning firewood. Maybe you heater vent filter needs to be replaced.

Reflux can cause it, a deviated septum, or a blocked eustachian tube.

I recommended Xyclear to my sister who always had sinus infections. It has xylitol which kills bacteria/fungus, and also grapeseed extract which does the same. She used prescription nosespray which did nothing for her. The xyclear actually worked to clear out her sinuses. However, I don't think it will clear an infection permanently. Check with your pedi before you use it. I don't know if it is ok for infants.

Reccurrent muccosal tissue infections (ear, lung, sinus, throat, vaginal)can be a sign of magnesium deficiency. There is a product called Babycalm which is magnesium citrate in drinkable form made for dosing to babies. The other products I would consider giving is fulvic acid (not to be confused with folic acid)which gives a large range of ionic minerals and supports immunity, and accidophilus / lactobaccilus, which helps support vit b production in the gut and feeds the good bacteria that supports immune function. VIt A has always been said to help mucossal tissues. You can get that in cod liver oil. Although I believe these products are very safe, please consult a doctor before you dose them to an infant.

Have you tried a Nosefrida or Baby Comfy Nose? Both are nasal aspirators that help unclog stuff noses. Also, the mom who mentioned saline drops is right, they do help!

I used saline drops in combo with the Nose Frida (you can get it online or at WHole Foods). THe Nose Frida is honestly among my list of 'THANK GOD' purchases. It works like a charm.
