My sister was put on ritalin for ADD. After awhile my mother stopped it and the teacher commented that sister was doing better! Have you tried Sylvan Learning Center or Coumans (sp)??? Just a non-medicine idea. Good luck.
Hi! I am looking for a good doctor in metro Detroit area/Royal Oak for my 12 year old daughter. She has been diagnosed years ago with attention deficit. Not hyper, she just has trouble working quickly on school work. We have tried several medicines but they are not really affective and gave her a bad headache. I am ready to try the doctor route again but would prefer starting with someone with a proven record of success with this. Any recommendations?

Try this optometrist first. My son, has the same problem. I didn't want any medicaiton because of the side effects. It turns out he doesn't have ADD, but a visual perception problem. She told me that many children are falsely labeled with ADD when it is actually a visual issue.

I highly recommend checking this out.
I used natural supplements for my grandson
Hey Poppy,
My son has ADD. We went through lots of different kinds of meds and various doses. It's difficult to find just the right one that works with each child. They work differently on everyone. He is on Concerta now and it works well for him. I feel like I give him every tool to insure that he has everyting he needs to do well in school (binders, rulers, books etc.)and his meds are another tool that he needs. He knows how they affect him and how hard it is to concentrate without them. I have not been to a doctor that is anything other than a peds Dr. but she works with us and is very understanding. She makes sure that he has blood work every year to check his liver and kidney functions, make sure hes eating well and the meds are still working. Her name is Dr. Saxena out of Oakwood in Canton. Good Luck, hold on to your patients and remember to stick by your daughters side and encourage her to take breaks often when she is getting frustrated with working. My son still needs quiet and no distractions even while on his meds. to do homework and or read.

It will be ok. I'd love to share some pretty amazing results of a natural alternative to meds if you are interested! Evidence has been collected of it's success...
Imagine, a dietary supplement than can impact your child's overall health AND ADD!

Hi Poppy!
I'm not going to go into my looonnng (lol) history but I have had great success with beaumont! Two of my children now ages 22 & 16 were tested at the ages of 12 & 5, and were diagnosed with ADD (daughter) & ADHD (son). Beaumont also gave additional diagnoses. I so love them! Their testing is very good, very thorough, my kids were put on medication that were best for them. My daughter it only took one but my son it needed to be switched several times until we found the proper one. They both did very well all threw school my son with ADHD got all A's & B's in elementary and is now in high school doing ok. My daughter graduated and is in college. So I believe your daughter will do fine with the proper physician and medication for her.
Good luck,
D.
If you are interested in non-medicine treatments, Neurofeedback is used successfully for ADD & ADHD as well as other behavioral problems. I am taking my daughter for other behavior problems. She is 10 and was adopted 3 years ago with lots of issues. We just started so I can't give you our success story, but I've done a ton of research on it and have a friend who is another adoptive mom who used it successfully on her kid. The website of the place we go is www.eegspectrum.com. The dr. is kind of a jerk, but I'm not there to make friends, I'm there to help my kid so I'm gonna overlook it for now. We go for 10 weeks, 2 times per week. I can tough it out for that amount of time :). There is one other place that I know of that does it. Found them after we signed up with Dr. Jerk. oh well.
Good luck,
L.
Poppy,
My 7 year old daughter was diagnosed with ADHD a couple of months ago. She isn't the type to run around but the diagnosis still fit. I tell you this as if you test her again you may find her to be ADHD too. My daughter goes to, Dr. Gary Trock, a neurologist in Royal Oak. She started Metadate about a month ago and has had great success. She's able to focus in class and do all of the things the teachers request. Before the medication it was a nightmare as when the work got too hard then she because disruptive to the classroom and wouldn't listen to the teachers. We weren't looking for a "miracle drug" but we were to the point of being willing to try anything that could possibly work.
Dr. Trock doesn't push medication on you but he did say the earlier they are treated the better results you will have because of what they have missed out on learning.
I hope this helps! Let me know how everything turns out.

I HIGHLY reccomend "Healing the New Childhood Epidemic: Autism, ADHD, Ashtma and Allergies" by Dr. Kenneth Bock. He has successsfully used a mostly natural healing program to help kids with ADHD and he explains how, regardless of the actual diagnosis (since your daughter is ADD), many of these disorders share common symptoms and can be treated similarly. In some of his cases, kids did need meds but in most of them, they can be successfully treated with nutrition supplements and change in diet. It's really amazing. My nephew has followed the same type of program (he was diagnosed on teh Autism spectrum) and has made AMAZING progress. I never used to "buy into" natural healing kinds of things but you can't deny the results this doctor (as well as my nephew's doctor and many others in the country) have had with this healing program.
