My soon to be 6 (in 1 month) yr old son has been potty trained since 2.5 and night trained since 3. No problems whatsoever, just an occasional accident simply because he doesn't want to stop playing and go to the bathroom. Well now he can't seem to hold his bladder and it seems like he is going to the bathroom every 20 minutes or so. He does drink alot of water, but he has always been that way. He also wet his bed 4 times last week during the night. We are moving into a new home this week and he says that he is excited about moving and going to a new school, but I wonder!!! I'm just wondering if this is something I should be concerned about and take him to the doctors or does this appear to be a phase of some sort. Anyone gone through this before?

What can I do next?

I would look into if he had a hernia. Not so much because of the bed wetting but because he is going so often.

Hi A., It sounds like the move is getting to your son a bit. Maybe you should try the new "overnighters" that are made for bigger kids til you get settled into your new home, new school and new routine. If nothing else it will give him a breather from worrying about wetting his bed & your laundry load a break as well. If it continues longer than a few weeks take him to the doctor to get tested for diabetes espically if it runs in your family. Frequent peeing is a symptom! Also cut back on juice and sugar-filled drinks as much as you can. Good luck and congrats on the new home!

If there are no physical, medical reasons for this--maybe it's just a little regression because so many new things are happening. I wouldn't make a big deal out of it if it happens and it will probably just run it's course and stop as he feels more secure with the new house & school. Good luck!

Dear A.,
You'll definitely want to rule out any physical problems first, but after that remember that at this age kid's bodies go through growth spurts. If his bladder isn't keeping up or "spurting" at the same time, that is definitely a possible cause. Also, the upcoming changes might be the source. Remember that our bodies often react physiologically to things that we often don't even think we're anxious about. Good luck & God bless!

A.,

It's possible that he may be a little anxious about the move, even though he seems to be excited about it. If that is the issue, it may help to limit the amount of fluid that he drinks during the evening hours, especially about 2 hours before putting him to bed at night.

However, its also possible that he may have picked up a bladder infection, so before limiting his fluid intake, I would recommend having him see his Pediatrician, just to be on the safe side. Urinating every 20 minutes is really excessive, and may indicate that he is having a problem completely emptying his bladder when he goes, which is a definite symptom of having a bladder infection.

My son wet his bed at night untilhe was 7 years old and it happened mostly the month that we moved to a new home and school also.He really wanted to try not to but almost every night he did.We didnt make a big fuss and did not get a docter involved. We stopped all drinking 2 hours before bedtime and that helped alot.We let him know that this is normal for many kids.Although I wasnt too crazy about changing sheets every night.I didnot go back to any pullups at that age.We got thru it and by 7 1/2 he just started getting upto go to the bathroom. He is 13 and we laugh about it now.Trust his body, try to have patience and dont make him feel guilty or bad about himself.Let him know he is not the only one.And dont feel bad like something is wrong with your child.Eventually we all get potty trained.

My son had the same thing happen to him. He was totally potty trained at about the same age and went through the nite very easily then started wetting the bed around 4-5yrs old. He would sometimes even do it multiple times. We ended up taking him to a chiropractor for about 6 mos. It did help after a few months of treatment. His neck and spine were most definitely out of alignment. His sleeping habits were also part of the problem as well. He would sleep so hard that he couldn't get up to go to the bathroom. One other possible part of it I feel is sleeping on the top bunk. He'd sometimes rather wet the bed than get up and get off the bunk to go.
He'll be 7 in a couple of weeks. He's still wets on occasion but not everyday like he used to. Part of it was also growing out of the age and waiting for the bladder to catch up. Sometimes their body will grow to fast and leave the bladder to catch up. By the time they hit 12yo it should be all better

Hi A.,
I'm told boys don't often get bladder infections because of their anatomy, but I would bet your son has one. As mentioned in the other responses, there are other possible physical causes. I strongly suggest taking him to the doctor to be have him checked, because that would be the safest course of action.
Best regards and good luck!

Hi A.,

Wow, a few new things for your son all at once. I agree with the posting recommendations: get his sugar checked for diabetes just to be sure and put your mind at ease. However, in my experience, it is probably an immature bladder coupled with sleeping so soundly that he can't wake himself up to go into the bathroom. Perhaps you could talk to him about wearing Goodnights. They are for a "big boy" whose body still needs to develop a little bit. Also, limit how much he drinks before bed and make sure he goes to the bathroom before he lays down.

If he just won't wear the Goodnights, you could also get a waterproof mattress pad. Or, if you are staying overnight in a hotel or someone else's house, you could wake him up in the middle of the night to take him to the bathroom. Not fun for you, but better than everyone being embarrassed in the morning.

There's a good chance your son wil grow out of the bed wetting stage -- around 11 or 12 years old.

Good luck.

I would talk to him and make sure there is nothing happening with him emotionally that is causing the setback. If all is OK there, then it is probably just a little nervousness about new school and moving! I would also make an appt with the doc just to be sure anyway.

I bet you it is just stress. However, diabetes is one thing that will defintiely increase urination like that. I would say probably 99.9999% that this wouldn't be the case but it never hurts to take him to the dr. to get his sugar checked.

I'm sure that it is benign, but I would agree that you need to call your doctor to rule out diabetes.

Being that he is very thursty for water and has a much increased frequency of urination I would be concerned about diabetes. Call the Dr and let him know your concerns. Sounds like he should have his sugar checked. It is not normal to urinate 3x/night. (unless you are 9 months pregnant.) ;-)
