Sudden Vision Difficulties

Yes, really odd question honestly don't think there is an answer at this moment. My daughter who is 8 just finished up some math problems that I gave her to do. They were handwritten in pencil in relatively small print. After she finished and they were correct I asked her to please read 2 chapters in her Harry Potter book. She had an attitude about it but she knows that it is part of our daily routine. Suddenly she comes from her room saying "I'm blind, I can't read" to which I realize 1) she's not actually blind and 2) she can read.

I told her that if she is being honest(she makes elaborate huge lies to where it's taken getting others involved to find out the truth)I will take her to the eye doctor. She is doing her laundry and asked me which setting to put her wash on. The print on the machine is not large at all. I believe she is lying to get out of reading however I could very well be wrong. She appears to be fine and normal in every other way. Honestly I hate doubting her but I know what she has done in the past and she is healthy. She is not running a fever, is not ill at all, for her to all of a sudden not be able to read words as she puts it makes no sense to me. She has never had any vision problems and actually has perfect vision at her last screening at the end of the school year.

I'm looking for any advice you all have. Thank you.

So What Happened?

I told her that maybe if she had some lunch that perhaps she would feel better. I did not tell her that her eyesight would be any better. She made herself a nice lunch and finished a few chores. Laundry is still going and I asked her to please set the temperature of the water to hot/cold on the machine. She did so without issue. She exclaimed in a very loud voice "GUESS WHAT NOW I CAN SEE THE LITTLE WORDS ON THE BOTTLE OF WATER!" - She was drinking a bottle of water with lunch. Thank you all for your suggestions. Will I know for sure if it had to do with low blood sugar, no, but what I do know is that now she's in her room excited about reading once again. No, I did not ask her to do so she jumped at the chance to find out what's happening with Harry Potter at Hogwart's. Thank you all once again. :)

how's her blood sugar? When mine is low or high, my vision is messed up!

my son wore glasses for reading during 4th grade...again in 6th grade...& hasn't since (10th grade now). The more he used computers, the more he required glasses. All-technology classrooms meant glasses for him. Text book/computer-combined classrooms meant he was a.o.k. without glasses. Crazy, hunh?

& then that brings us to behavioral issues...& that's up to you to decide if that's what's happening. Rule out medical...& go from there. :)

Could be a made up story to get out of what she's doing, could also be poor light, low blood sugar, simple dehydration, watery eyes from allergies, or the start of a headache (tension, sinus, even beginning migraine). Or she was just tired. She could also have friends with fun glasses or she's seen the plain glasses they sell as fashion accessories, and is lobbying for a purchase. I agree if she were totally blind she'd be panicking, but there could be something nagging. Wait and see - if it's only related to her obligation to read 2 chapters, you know she's fine. Take her off TV, computer and video games to "rest her eyes" and see if she gets better! If it recurs in other situations, have her evaluated.

By the way, i LOVE that's she's doing her own laundry!! Good for you!

My first guess also was blood sugar levels.

If she were truly having problems, I would expect her to be panicking, not able to do anything. If she is able to walk around, and isn't upset about it, then that would seem to me that she is just putting off the reading.

Although, you'll have to take me with a grain of salt. I had my son's eyes checked in May and was informed he has monovision. Cannot see out of his right eye at all. I had no clue. He loves to read. He had problems doing homework, but we thought it was typical 'don't like math' issues.

Just take her to the Doctor, for an eye exam.

Mama, I think she's just pulling your chain, and you're falling for it hook, line and sinker.

Ignore this stuff, don't let her off the hook with her work, and make sure that if you see ACTUAL eye problems (when she doesn't see you looking), that you take her to the eye doctor. Don't talk about it with her and don't make a big deal out of it.
