Suddenly Eating Less

For the past four days, my 4 1/2 month old son has stopped eating his usual six ounces every three hours & is now eating only four ounces every 3 1/2 to 4 hours. I've asked the doctor, and he says as long as he's finishing 2/3 of his bottle, he's fine. He was a six week early premie, so he's small for his age, only 13lbs 7oz. Everyone I ask say that babies thrive & will eat when they're hungry, but I can't help but worry every bottle seems like what he ate when he was a newborn!

Moms, please help settle my nerves.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Since I posted this, my husband suggested we try to hold him off for feedings every four hours, instead of every three & he has since finished every bottle. Thanks for your support! I think he's going to be fine!

hi--I have 2 boys of my own and they both have tended to do things in stages. First they would eat a ton then they would not but they would sleep a ton. This is still going on with my youngest-he was 1 in Aug. I think as long as he is gaining weight and not losing it - he is on the right track.

If it makes you more comfortable -- call the doctor's office and you can talk to a different doctor or a nurse on the phone. I know you said that they said it is ok but if you want to get another opinion for yourself there is no problem in calling.

At around 3 1/2-4mths my son was in a great routine of eating 5 oz. every 3 hours. All of the sudden he was not interested in eating. He would only take a couple ounces. He would look all over the place while eating and I just thought he was getting older and becoming more aware of his surroundings. He was never fussy and slept great. I have a friend who is a ped and she said it was strange that he was eating so much for so long as a 3 1/2 month old. Anyway, I decided to take him to the ped and sure enough he had a sore throat and an ear infection. Like I said before he was acting totally normal except for his eating. I hope this helps!

Has he started solids? If so this is why? Once he is used to the solids he will bring back the higher ounces of milk. Also he could be teething and it is getting in the way of sucking.

My son was 6 weeks early as well and did the same exact thing. I worried too!

All I can say is he will eat more when he's hungry and less when he's not. My son went through spurts like that. Probably in a week he be back to eating what he was , if not even more!

Good luck and enjoy!

Is he teething? My twins slowed down on drinking when they were getting ready to cut a tooth. Try rubbing your finger on his gums to see if he is bothered by it. If he is you can expect one pretty soon:)

Hang in there, there is no easy answer for this. Two of my three children were preemies. My oldest was an 11 wk preemie and I had the same problem. He wasn't as big as your baby at that age and ate considerably less (I was nursing and supplementing w/ a bottle). As long as he's eating consistently - that is key. For peace of mind, keep track of when he's eating and how much. You may find a trend or it may be just an off day.
