Suggestions for a Sling That Can Be Worn While Breastfeeding

I found it easiest to breastfeed my son with a ring sling once he was able to sit up in it on my hip - after 5 months. I managed before that when he was lying in it but it was much more difficult - I needed to support him in the right position with one arm and it took a bit of wiggling. I didn't get my Moby wrap until he was eight months old and too big to breastfeed in it, but I've seen mums breastfeeding very small infants (from 0 to 3 months) in wraps and as long as you get the position right, that seems much the easiest for both mum and baby. Oh, mai-tais seem to work well, too.

Do you have a store in your city that specializes in breastfeeding supllies and support? We have a little chain here called Bestfed and the people there are just wonderful and very supportive. If you have something similar, I am sure they could advise you.

I've heard ring slings work good while BF. Not sure about any pouch types. Also heard that wraps work good, such as a Moby wrap. You can might try going to Baby Bear. They sell all kinds of carriers.

I actually have a hotsling that I've been planning on putting on Craigs list: http://www.hotslings.com/ it is a size 3 and a tan/red/aqua paisley pattern - older model... I wasn't able to nurse so I don't know how it would work for that but it is a great sling.

A ring sling is nice if your baby will lay down it it. The great thing about it is it can be easily adjusted for different positions. My son never wanted to be in that position, though, so I mainly used a wrap, and I was able to breast-feed perfectly well in it. I have a gypsy momma wrap that I absolutely love. Also, when the child is bigger, you can do hip carries, front carries, and back carries. I also really like Mei Tais (babyhawk is my favorite!!!), but this is better for breastfeeding once they can hold their head up a bit on their own (about 3-4 months). I have about 6 or 7 different kinds of carriers if you ever want to try them out and see what works for you :). My name is D.. I used the over the shoulder baby holder. You can only get it on line and they will send you a video on all the ways it can be used. I would nurse my baby in a store while shopping and nobody could tell.

I got a wonderful sling that I used with both of my kids when they were babies. I could breastfeed them and hold them in it for hours. I got it from a website called Motherwear. They have really great breastfeeding clothing and accessories. It was a ring sling. My kids are older now, but I was able to get about 4 years of use out of that sling - I was still carrying them in it when they were toddlers. The ring sling is adjustable and you can set it to how you want to carry the baby. It's great.

I have teh Wendy Belisimo (sp?) sling. I purchased it at Babies R us, and I love it. It's comfortable to wear and it comes with a cover for nursing. It takes some practice but it's definitely do-able!

Most people have the easiest time in a ring sling. You can also in a wrap, though it takes a little more learning. But it might be worth it for any back issues. I love wraps for many reasons!

I tried nursing with wraps and a hotsling and never could get the right position or my son didn't like his head covered. I just got an ergobaby (ergobaby.com) carrier that I LOVE and tried nursing my son (11 months) in it and it worked great.

My best suggestion os going to Best Fed located on 59th and Thunderbird, they have a variety of slings and will help you find the one that best fits you, also they will show you how to wear it and you can try it right there with your baby.

I haven't needed one for a long time, my kiddos are 9 and 7!! I have heard great things about Hooter Hiders though. I know you can purchase one at Every Mother & Child, I believe they are around $35.00. My sister is having her 3rd baby and hasn't found something that works for her yet, her friend told her about Hooter Hiders and how much she liked it. I think you can check them out on the web, they do have some pretty cool patterns. Good Luck!!

it is a mei tei that is made by a local phoenix mom. if you need help learning how to use it, she will personally help you. besides it being the best sling i have ever owned, it is great for nursing. the back of the mei tei stays up to give the little one head support and there is a hood that can be taken out to provide coverage if your little one gets distracted or for modesty (or in the phoenix sun i use it to protect my daughter when we are out and about). and when you don't want the hood it zips into the sling and you can't tell it is even there.
