If you haven't already, start a college savings plan (529) as was previously suggested. (Or buy a savings bond in her name.) Family and friends can put money into the savings plan, too. Just buy her something small, bright and makes noise and she will love that. Take the extra money and put it in the 529. You will be glad you did later.

Get her an American Girl Bitty baby. They are adorable! Other family members can get her accessories for the doll. My daughter loves her American Girl dolls! http://store.americangirl.com/agshop/static/dolls.jsf/uni...

We are financially strapped right now because I am on a Leave of Absence to finish my education. I graduate in December after 8 long years! :) Because of this I decided that for daughter's birthday, we wouldn't be going too extravagant on the gifts. She turns one in November. I have decided to make a CD with songs that are about parenting and the love I feel for her. I am having my husband make one as well. When she is a little older I want to be able to play them for her to remind her how special she is. I also plan on writing a letter for her to open on her 18th birthday or when she leaves us for college/to be on her own. My mother had letters for me at different times during my life and I loved each one more than any other gift she had ever given me. Toys are easily forgotten and thrown away, it is the little things and sentimental gifts that last.
Another idea is to make a time capsule for her to open on her 18th birthday and fill it with letters, newspapers, pictures, and other items from her 1st year of life. My friend did this for her daughter and it turned out really neat. I have also heard of people having a quilt made from their children's clothing from the first year. I wanted to have this done, but couldn't find anyone to do it for me.
The grandparents have asked what to get for my daughter and I told them to get her some 12mos toys and my mother is getting her a push walker wagon. Of course, there are always clothes as well! I also asked them to pick out a book and write a message in the front cover for her.
These are some suggestions, I hope they help.
Take care!

I would get something that has to do with crawling and walking. A shopping cart is great, a walker, that she can puch, that makes noise, and she can sit with and then stand and push. A dolly carriage. Corolle and Pottery Barn kids have nice ones.

Don't spend alot of money for the first one. She is still too young to know. We got mostly cloths (that would be show for the others really). Give her a small cake and put it in front of her and let her tear it up. Messy but fun and the pictures were great and very memorable.
Save your money for the 2nd birthday. There is so much that she can do and will want it is unbelievable and you will want to get her everything.
Happy Birthday.

The walker things are good now that she is in walking age. My daughter just got one from Fisher Price (a shopping cart thing) It was very easy to put together, and she plays with it for a while, but then she is off again to the next...

Good luck! ;)

A card, or thought, or poem for each birthday is a good idea and keep them so she can look over them when she is older.

I agree with a previous posting of anything she can push around, like a shopping cart or baby carriage, or a car, she'll probably love. And Elmo is typically a big hit. There are tons of different Elmo's.

You've gotten some great suggestions for toys. We got our oldest a Little Tikes climb and slide and he loved it because he was a big climber. He's 5 now and both of our kids still play on it. We got our youngest the bounce and spin zebra (he wasn't too thrilled with it, but some of his cousins loved it) and the fisher price animal train which they both loved. He would follow it all around the house. Another idea is a child's rocking chair. Both of my kids have one painted with their name and a design on it and they love having their own chair to sit in.

My daughter got a Melissa and Doug Clack and Clatter alligator push toy. She LOVES the thing. She was a good walker by the time she got it and still pushes it around at 18 months.

We got my son a Little Tikes Climb and Slide Castle and started a college savings plan (529). He still loves the castle and it is small enough for indoors. The latter didn't make too much of an impression, but he will thank us later. :)

Hi,
I just wanted to say that my daughter celebrated her first birthday on the 3rd. My husband and I bought her a swing set and also bought the baby swing attachment. She absolutely loves it!! She swings in it almost everyday! Good Luck to you and Happy Birthday to your daughter!

The first birthday is more for mommy and daddy, grammas and grampas, than for the baby. So just have a fun time, make a cupcake for baby and get some fab photos.
You know what your baby likes, so get some little thing, and you don't have to spend a fortune because the baby doesn't care and doesn't know the difference!! Let grandparents, aunts and uncles get some gifts.
The 2nd or 3rd birthdays are when it gets to be really fun, and they understand a little better what's going on.
Keep #1 simple and fun, don't go overboard, and she will enjoy her cupcake and tearing the wrapping off a couple presents. Don't be surprised if she wants to play with the boxes, ribbons, bows, and paper more than the presents!! And get pics of that too!!
