I'm doing a scavenger hunt for the an upcoming family reunion in addition to other games for kids. I would love ideas of a bigger prize for the winners and then smaller prizes for everyone who participates. I've went online to Oriental Trading but some of their stuff can be expensive and it adds up quickly. I need prizes for about 25 children for each one of the games; although, I know that not all kids will participate in every game. My budget is limited to $40.
Thanks to everyone who replied; great suggestions. I was stressing over nothing. Unfortunately, not as many kids showed up. So, those that did got a ton of loot! It was a nice time and the $40 stretched a lot farther than I thought it would. I was actually under budget. I also had a person donate some toys from McDonalds that she had and hadn't opened them. Those were a HUGE hit.

Candy! Seriously, everyone loves candy, and most kids don't get a lot of it on a regular basis, so it's a real treat. Plus it's cheap and doesn't end up in the trash like so much cheap plastic junk.

Great personalized things and party themes etc.
My friend got things from here a few times and it was good quality and we still even have and use the luggage/bag tags that we got from her kid's parties. And she also got things for Christmas gifts etc., from here too. The placemats were real nice.
Useful stuff, not doo-dad junk.
They have a sale now too.
what about Cracker Jacks from Sam's or Costco for the participants? You might also look at the Dollar Stores-sometimes they have multiples in packs for a dollar. I have seen little books, pool toys, and other items that might be what you are looking for. Have fun. Sounds like a fun time for all!
With a $40 budget I would think you would be able to get lots of items.
Do you have some type of "Job Lot" type of store. It's a great place to find inexpensive items or try a dollar store. Look for packages of items that can be opened and separated ie a package of stickers that has 5 sheets, each sheet can be a prize.
When's the event? Back to school sales are starting. You may be able to find items like crayons and markers at low prices. Also, summer clearance will be here shortly. You may be able to find pool items, like beach balls at discounted prices.
Some ideas for prizes...
books - activity books
pail and shovel
bubbles
puzzles
cool pencils/erasers
cards / card games
With your budget, I think I would go to the Dollar Store.
Here are some ideas:
-keychains
-Matchbox cars
-hula hoop
-candy
-puzzles
-pack of $1 bracelets
-pack of $1 necklaces
-fuzzy kid frame for girls' bedroom
-kick ball
-deck of cards
-travel game (Dollar store)
These could all be for the big prize.
For the little ocnsolation prizes go to a party store & look in there bulk
bins for bulk little toys like plastic rings, plastic mini cars, etc.
They sometimes will put 6 or even 10 little things in one pack like party favors. Just break the pkg up & give one to each child as a consolation prize.
