We recently took our son to the beach for one week. He loved it and we want to take some more trips. Preferably weekend type trips. If anyone can suggest a city/town in our own backyard, or within an hour flight time, that has a great zoo, parks and other toddler friendly activities, please let me know. Or if there are any books, or articles on this subject, I'd like to know about those too. Or any special hotels geared toward children, etc. Thanks for any ideas.

We just took our daughter to San Antonio and she had a great time. She loved Sea World and there is a zoo there - although we didn't go. We went to Sea World 2 days and then went to the River Walk and ate at Rain Forest Cafe (the one here is just too far - so since it was convenient we went there).

Hyatt Hill Country is a very nice resort (kid friendly) and it's right across the highway from Sea World.

This trip was great - my daughter was about to turn 4 (just 3 weeks later). You could fly on Southwest and I think it's an hour flight (it was a 5 hour drive).

Good luck!

We like to take our kids (ages 4 and 1) to Glen Rose,TX and spend the day at Fossil Rim Wildlife Park. http://www.fossilrim.com/

It is a drive thru zoo and the animals come up to the cars, and you can feed them, so very cool. My kids love it! There is also Dinosaur Valley National Park there. Go to see it, it is great. http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/findadest/parks/dinosa...

Hope this is of interest!

Last March we took our three boys (then ages 2, 4, and 6) to Tyler for 3 days/2 nights. It was our first "real" vacation - staying in a hotel we paid for, etc. There was plenty of fun cheap/free stuff for the kids. The hotel pool was indoor, and fun. We really enjoyed our trip.

If you have a membership at the FW Science and history musuem you can visit other childrens musuems around the us - there is a list online. We went to one in New Orleans this summer, as well as one down in Houston.

We recently took a road trip with our two children who are 2 and 3 so am not sure on the flight times but can give you 2 places that our kids loved.

First was St Louis, they have a great zoo which is free. Zagat rated it number 1 in the states and they have a baby elephant at the moment. They have other family friendly places to visit like museums which were also free.

Indianapolis has a fantastic childrens museum which is 4 floors of interactive exhibits for the kids, this was amazing and we wish we could have spent longer there as we all had a great time.
