Sunscreen Recommendation

Wondering if anyone can recommend a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 that is safe for babies, does not contain harsh chemicals (natural ingredients preferred) and does not leave a thick white residue. I've tried Baby Avalon Organics and Burts Bees, but both leave the skin sticky white and I have to give a bath afterwards.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks so much for everyone's input! It really helps. Sunscreen is expensive and I didn't want to try everything. My husband and I really enjoy being outdoors, hiking, birding, etc. and really want to settle on some sunscreen soon. Thanks again.

My recommendation is to get the spf clothing. We got my son (now 4) 2 Nautica swim shirts when we went to the Bahamas last May. Not only did he love them (and they looked cute) but they were better than any sunscreen. He had a pretty outrageous farmers tan, but they provided great protection. They also make long sleve sun clothes with a built in spf. My daughter is 7 mos and I plan to use a chemical free sunscreen, I'll probaby try CA baby, and spf clothing.

FYI- no matter what sunscreen you use, a bath is always a good idea after using it anyways:)

I use a sunscreen by California Baby. It's completely organic and has an spf of 30. I couldn't find it at any store though and had to order it online. I saw somewhere that Arbonne was recommended. Even though it's supposed to be all natural, it had a very poor rating on the Skin Deep Cosmetic Safety Database, http://cosmeticdatabase.com/, I check out all products here before I use them on my baby.

Hi S.,

I rarely use sunscreen on myself or my daughter. I limit our time in the direct sun or cover up during the noon time. If I can't avoid direct or all day sun, I broke down and just ordered Natural Sunscreen from Mercola.com. (I also ordered bug off as well). No chemicals but I don't yet know about a residue. I can let you know once it arrives, or, you can check out the site and maybe call the 800 number and ask them. I like it because the site lists out every ingredient in sunscreens (and bug spray for that matter) to look out for and avoid. Just because a product says it is natural doesn't mean it's not dangerous or harmful.

Best of luck! A

My daughter has really fair skin (like me and I am just over 30 and already have had skin cancer removed from my face) and I recently started buying stuff from Coolibar. They make sun proof clothing etc. I really like the hats and swimshirt I have gotten from them. They even have a lightweight blanket that I have and love for over the stroller etc. Do a promotions code search online before you submit your order cause sometimes they have great deals. Also they sent me samples of sunscreen and the Blue Lizard sensitive skin sunscreen was great for my 10 month old who had never worn sunscreen. It didn't seem really sticky and it contains no chemical absorbers or fragrance.

We use Lavera as well and love it. Honestly, you WANT the sticky white residue. The ones that don't leave a residue are absorbed into the skin (and consequently all the chemicals that go with it) The white film is typically a mineral that protects by forming a barrier on the skin. Lavera uses Zinc as the protectant, which is excellent.

www.mercola.com has a sunscreen that I am going to try that is all natural and safe for kids as well. However, it will be a barrier type of sunscreen.

In addition, children under 1 year should be kept in the shade as much as possible. Their skin is soooo sensitive. My daughter is 9 months old. I try to dress her in light colored and light material clothing that covers as much as possible and keep her in the shade. If we do go out we currently use the Lavera product.

I have always used Shaklee's Enfuselle SPF 30. It is great for kids and babies, and has Vit. C & E which when you put it on it feels and applies like a lotion. Feel free to check it our at www.shaklee.net/avwellness.

Use Aubrey Organics. No bad additives at all. It is only SPF 25, but well worth none of the crappy chemicals. Do not get the green tea variety, very messy, but they do have one that is nice that absorbs into the skin, I think it is just called Natural Sunscreen SPF 25. You can get Aubrey at Whole Foods or go online to find another retailer near you. http://www.aubrey-organics.com

We have been using Neutrogena Ultra-Sheer Dry Touch SPF 45 since our son was a little baby, because of his sensitive skin. It isn't organic or without chemicals, but it works REALLY well. We just spent the Memorial Day holiday in Palm Springs, CA. We spent all day in the desert sun. My husband, son and I wore the Neutrogena religously and nobody got burned. Also, it does not leave the white residue. In fact, it dries so fast that during application I couldn't remember which body part I had already done!

If you live near a Whole Foods, they carry a good one. Don't get Earth's Best (the one in the yellow bottle) - it's very pasty and hard to rub in. The one I prefer is by Avalon Organics (in a white bottle). It's consistency is much more like "regular" sunscreen and it's worked well for me so far (my daughter will be 2 soon).

Arbonne. It's amazing and not too pricy and it's pediatrician/dermatologist TESTED (very very diff. than recommended). No bath necessary after applying! My 15 mo old boys have never had a sunburn and they're at the age where they refuse to wear a hat or sunglasses...or shoes most of the the time! Be careful about the spf - anything over 30 can produce a chemical burn. It's a big misnomer that slathering baby in 70 is a good idea. Also, make sure to apply 15-20 before you actually go outside or it's not effective.

Hi,
I'm using Baby Lizard spf 30. It is chemical free, fragrance free. The ingredients are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. It starts white but rubs in really fast on my 17 month son. I love that I can but it on his fair skin and not smell it all day!! I purchased it at Rite Aid. A great resource is www.costmeticsdatabase.com. They rate everything that you would put on your skin (from mosturizer to baby soap)on a safety scale. I LOVE it! I hope that helps!

Mary Kay has a nice one too, but honestly with a recent article I read in Fitness Magazine you probably should go higher than 30. They said because of the situation our ozone is in basically 30 is practically the 15 we grew up with. They said 30 is find for around home, but if you are going to the beach it should be at least 50 if not 70. I remember learning that anything above 45 really did nothing more, but the article went on to say that all this has changed and that 70 really works. I forget what one they recomended but check out the article it is the issue in news stands now.

You could always try everything at your health food store till you find the best one. Check out the safe shoppers bible to find what chemicals to avoid. I'm using the only one they have at Trader joes. You can also find spf shirts at REI, and hats. He's 6 months, so will probably be having lunch & taking a nap near peak sun. play in the shade more, there young and can't regulate there temp till about 2-4 years. I didn't do a lot of full sun play till mine was a walking, 10 months, or more. But then we've got Irish blood, so we burn. As for bathes, I hope to get so dirty each day that I need one too.
Have fun playing in mud! A. H

I just bought California Baby spf30 from Whole Foods. It looks like the least invasive sunscreen ("sits on top of the skin scattering and reflecting"...), and it also has no parabens or fragrance. Definitely the purest I've found. My daughter is six months too, and I plan on keeping her in the shade as much as possible...but this is the sunscreen I will be slathering on her for when she is briefly exposed.

As for my two older (7 and 8), I use the JASON line and the Kiss My Face has a paraben free. I've used these because my kids are in the water a lot and need a more 'agressive' sunscreen to protect them. The parabens are the main thing I refuse to put on their screen.

I agree with Kelly S. I use the cosmetic data base to check everything out before putting a product on my daughter. We use California Baby sunscreen (and bug lotion, too). As well as trying to limit the amount of product we use by keeping her in the shade, wearing a hat, and sun protective clothing. Someone else mentioned Coolibar, I love their stuff. :) Hope that helps. :)

Hi S.,
Yesterday the Mike and Juliet Show did a program about sunscreens. Consumer Reports did a study of 20 different sunblocks and how they protect from UVA (aging rays) and UVB (burning rays). They said that when you buy a sunscreen the SPF on the bottle only rates protection against UVB rays...so this study was to look at the protection they give for UVA rays. Needless to say,

The WORST sunscreen was "Innovative Sunscreen" (IS) SPF 20
The BEST was "Neutrogena Ultra-Sheer Dry Touch" SPF 45 This rated Excellent at both UVA and UVB protection.
The BEST-BUY was "NO-AD" SPF 45 (can buy anywhere!)

We started with "Organic and best for baby stuff" but now I'm switching to sunblocks that have studys backing up the protection they give to my family. Organic items aren't always FDA approved/regulated and truly you don't know how much of the ingredients are in each bottle....I DON'T KNOCK ORGANIC THOUGH...I always prefer organic over non-organic, but I also want protection.

hope this helps!
