We are supposed to leave tomorrow to go on vacation to Chicago for 3 days. Our hotel is already paid for and it is too late for a refund. Of course both kids are now sick. My 8 month old is on the mend, he just has a little runny nose still. My 3yo just hit the worst day today, runny nose, fever, the works. They are both on antibiotics, but he started his Thursday, she just started hers this morning. I hope she will be doing better by tomorrow but not sure what to do is shes not. Its about a 2 hour car ride for us to get there. We didnt have big plans, just a trip to the aquarium and dinner out. Im not sure if we should go and then play it by ear as far as day plans, or stay home... We arent planning on going to the aquarium until Monday, so she will have another day to rest up at the hotel. This really stinks, its the first vacation we have planned since we got married 4 years ago. Any advice?? TIA

What can I do next?

Sounds like they have colds with no fever. I'd take them and play the days by the ear. You'll benefit from the change of place and activity.

My advice...put em in the car, keep their meds current, supplement with tylenol if allowed, and GO. Although it stinks to travel with 2 sick kiddos, my experience is that things change quickly. Since you aren't flying and it is close enough to come home if needed, there is no reason not to go. Chances are they will feel better than expected and you'll be glad you didn't waste the weekend.

Good luck!!

Murphy's Law right........I'd go. You are traveling by car, anything that happens, you will be there for, everything is contained, you are not involving a flight of people who would be livid if you brought a sick child aboard. Just bundle them up and go. Your daughter is already on antibiotics as is your son. She started today, by Monday they will have kicked in and she should be good to go to the aquarium. Keep them both hydrated well, gatorade, pediacare, water. Continue antibiotics. Bring tissues, tylenol or motrin for any left over fever and hand sanitizer so they are not at risk for anyhing further.

I would go. It won't change the fact that they are sick. But they will either be sick at home having no fun or you can go on vacation and have fun anyways~ Unless they are super, super sick, I would go!!!! Bring all the comforts that you need for your kids and meds and tylenol and you will be fine. Good luck and relax...it will be great!

Awww, tough luck, but I think you should take the chance and go. Sounds like you aren't planning anything too strenuous, so you will be able to give your daughter plenty of rest if she needs it. I bet by Monday she'll be feeling much better and will be ready to enjoy the Shedd. Hope you go and have a great time!

Yeah, I would go - I have gone in situations like this before. Keep their meds on hand, maybe look up a pediatrician or clinic where you are going that is in your network (just in case) and go enjoy your vacation. I bet your little one will feel a lot better tomorrow already.

Go anyway. Rest at the hotel tomorrow, and the antibiotics will have kicked in for your daughter by Monday. If you have 2 adults with you, take small (like umbrella) strollers for the kids so that they don't take up much room, but your 3 year won't have to walk.

Hop cabs from place to place because it is very expensive to park in the city. The cabs will take you right up to the door, and your umbrella strollers will easily fit in the trunk of the cab.

Just as an aside, years ago when my kids were little, we drove to Florida for a Disney vacation. My 5 year old threw up during the drive down, and at first I thought he ate something that didn't agree with him. But after we checked in, I realized that he was running a fever, and he kept sporatically throwing up. The next day I called the doctor and told her where we were and asked what to do. She asked me several questions and decided that he had a stomach virus. When she knew I had a stroller, she told me to go anyway and let him sleep in the stroller (it was a bigger one that Disney let us bring in) and when he felt okay, let him ride something. Along with keeping him hydrated, that's exactly what we did. I remember taking him into the Haunted House, him coming out and throwing up in the bushes, and then asking to go back in again. We must have done it 3 or 4 times. (At least he didn't throw up in any of the rides - just in the bushes!) He was in decent spirits until he started feeling better. When he felt better, he was really crabby!

Anyway, have a good time - Chitown is beautiful at this time of the year.

Since you are driving, I would definitely still go. Just have the mindset that you may spend the time in the hotel. That can still be very fun!

Sorry to hear :(.....Usually the hotels do have a 24 hr cancelation policy and if you do cancel inside the 24 hrs, you usually have to pay one night. If you booked with an internet site, then this is different. If you booked with a travel agent, they will usually change the dates without a fee, as long as you re-book. If you did this through the hotel, ask to speak to reservation management and they will most likely work w you.

That being said, kids do bounce back quickly and seeing as though there is no plane ride, you might be able to swing it with a little tylenol and an extra day to rest at the hotel. I am sure your are so excited to get away for a few days. Also, if you really are going to lose the money for the hotel, maybe it's worth a shot and you can always turn around and come home as it's only two hours.

I'd go too. Bring a stroller for both as they will probably be a little less energetic than usual. Have fun!

oh that's bad ... I would still go. It's only a 2 hr drive, you can go and just have fun in the hotel. If they are just too crabby, you can just drive back when they nap. Since your kids are already on antibiotics, they wont be contagious. So you could still go to the aquarium etc , you need not worry for spreading it to other kids. But ya, don't take them to places with admissions if they are really feeling down. Waste of money!

Go ahead and go. The antibiotics will kick in and she'll be up running around in hours. Then you'll need the vacation!

You are driving so just go. They will be much better by tomorrow. Sounds
like only a bad cold. Now vomiting and diarrhea would be another issue
for sure. Have fun.
