When my son was a toddler I had him take swimming lessons at Lifetime Fitness on Old Orchard Rd. in Skokie. He loved the class, and at the toddler age it is meant to be taken with a parent or caregiver. Here are some of the reasons why I really like the class: it was fun!, they played games and learned swimming skills, the water was actually warm, the pool is one of the zero depth pools similar to a beach, and they have family shower and changing rooms, so it is easy afterwards to shower and get dressed. Even if you are not a member of the Lifetime, you can still enroll in classes. They also have weekend and evening class, as well as daytime classes. Oh, I forgot to mention that I thought the instructors were very good.

Hi there,

You might want to try Lifetime Fitness. I think it is near Old Orchard. Also, I am pretty sure there is a JCC in Lincolnwood.

Hope that helps.

Hey N.,
My 6 1/2 month son and I take swim lessons at the YWCA in Evanston. It is on Church in between Ridge and Asbury. He loves it! They have a great program. My sisters used to teach swimming there. If you have any questions let me know.

We tried through the Skokie Park District...not so good. I don't recommend that. Now we've been taking for over a year at the Leaning Tower YMCA on Touhy in Niles. They've been great for us. My 4 year old son has learned so much and is not scared of the water anymore. My 2 1/2 year old daredevil daughter loves the parent tot class. She can now float on her own while holding a swim noodle, and she is so proud of herself. The Y has member and nonmember rates. Good luck!

I don't live in your area but check out your YMCA, that's where we go. THe public pools might have outdoor lessons in the summer.

My 23mo old just started with the Skokie Park District and contrary to what the other mom said, we love the parent tot swim. These are his first lessons and he goes with his dad who is not a strong swimmer (I used to teach lessons with summer camps) and they have really enjoyed it. For the under 3year olds its very basic. They are using a swim noodle and learning to kick and get their face wet. We love it, and it is the most affordable swim program we have found in the area (we looked also at the YMCA)

N.- First of all welcome to Chicago. Most of us here really love it. Any park district or YWCA/YMCA that has a pool pretty much offers LOTS of activities as well as swim lessons. Outside pools, that are relatively close to your area are Wilmette & Northbrook. There is also a Y in Northbrook that has a huge indoor pool. Evanston has a Y, but I don't know about a pool. Lastly, some private clubs allow their pool staff to give lessons to non-members. Call the main number and ask to speak to the Swim Pro. The Evanston Golf Club, which I think has actually gone public, would probably have swimming lessons. Westmoreland, a private club in south Wilmette is another possibility.
As far as Lincolnwood or Skokie, I can't say, sorry.

We love the YMCA in Evanston and have been doing swim lessons with the kids for years. Right now we have our 5 1/2 year old and 2 year old enrolled. I believe they start lessons at 6 months.

Good luck.

Hi N.,
I have a 2.5 year old and a 4 month old. We have the 2.5 year old in the skokie park district swim class. He likes it a lot. I am thinking about putting the 4 month old in the class next quarter, but am not sure if he is too young for it. Most of the kids in the class are at least 1. You can get more info about these classes at www.skokieparkdistrict.org. They have links to their program guides on the rigth side of the page. The swim classes started a couple weeks ago, but you may be able to join late and pay less if there is space.

The Galter Life Center isn't too far from there, up in the Lincoln Square/Ravenswood area. I've heard good things about their lessons. You can google and get info on their Aquababies classes.
