Hi everyone!

I am looking for any advice/recommendations on places to take my daughter for her first swim lessons. She is 2 1/2 years old and I really would like to get her introduced to the water early. I'm most concerned about someplace that will focus on safety issues in and around the water. We live in Andersonville so are looking for something on the north side of Chicago or Lincolnwood/Niles/Evanston area.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

I.

Swimming is a wonderful bonding experience. At this age, they still need you to hold onto them so you will have to be in the water too. Like another poster, I took my kids to our local YMCA for mom/dad and tot lessons. My kids were less than a year when they started and are not afraid of the water now. It was great fun watching them learn from me.

You are doing right by getting her to be water friendly and not afraid. Enjoy this experience. It will last a lifetime and may even be a lifesaver one day!

the chicago park district offers free lessons! My daughter is doing extremely well. Try Independence park. Iheard they are really good. Go online to find the what facilities the parks have.

Hi I.:
I have 3 children and they all learned to swim at the YMCA. When they were young, I enrolled in a mom and tot swim class. Since I enjoy the water too, I think sharing my enthusiasm with my children added to their success.

My brother used "Infant Swimming Resource" when he was in Florida. They don't have anything in Chicago, but if you look them up on the web you might be able to learn about their program and then search for a similar option here. The kids are in the water with the instructors only- and when class is over, parents are right there with warm towels. They teach the children what to do if they fall in the water- how to float on their back, how to get to the side of a pool and climb up the ladder. They sent pictures of their son floating face down, blowing bubbles, floating on his back, doing the front crawl, and he was almost 2 when they took the class.

Good Luck,
M.
