Yesterday we switched our son's(13 months) last 2 bottles over to sippy cups. He drinks from sippys all day long but when he woke and at bed he drank 6 oz of milk from a bottle. I switched those drinks to a sippy and now he will not drink the entire 6 oz, maybe only 2 oz. I am concerned he is not drinking enough milk. As the days go by and he is not offered a bottle will he adjust his drinking from a sippy and I am just expecting too much too soon? Thanks

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

He is doing very well. Drank 10 oz of milk throughout the day yesterday in addition to water and juice. Started drinking more milk today already so I am less concerned. Thanks for all the words of reassurance.

Yes he will adjust. If he is thirsty he will drink. Offer other things besides milk such as water and juice which he needs to drink. He can other things that have calcium in it such as yogurt and string cheese. Just give it a few days it will be fine.

my son did the same thing. Eventually he just started drinking more. They just need to get used to it. When you look at nutrition you look at time over weeks not a day or too. Don't worry, one day he'll drink less and the next day he'll drink and eat more. good luck!

You may want to try out the sippy cups yourself because sometimes the valves make them really hard to suck on...have you tried a couple different brands? It could be that your son is getting tired of trying to get the milk out of a too tight valve.

Also, if you're son is eating other dairy, like cheeses and yogurt, then he doesn't have to have much, if any milk.

There is no absolute rule as to when to remove the bottle, and sippy cups are a purely optional step for kids. Sippy cups are a recent invention and seem (from the many issues on this site) to create another stress for moms.

My daughter would not ever drink from a sippy cup, so she had two bottles a day until she was almost 3. She drank from a regular glass at mealtimes starting at 14 months. Use your judgement to make sure your child is getting fed.

We just offer milk or water in sippy cups, our 18 month old does not get juice. They decide that they like the sugary stuff and wont drink the good stuff. Good luck. My doctor says he should be getting between 16 and 24 oz of milk a day. We give milk in the morning sippy, at breakfast, lunch and dinner and then throughout the day and for snack he gets water.

If he's thirsty and can get the liquid from the sippy cups he'll drink it. It took my kids a bit of adjustment before they realized they weren't getting that bottle.
