Swollen and Purple Gums

I just took my daughter for her 4 month check-up and got some surprising news from the doctor. (it has been a banner week... as is shown by my other posting today)

About a month ago my daughter started teething and the gums where her two front teeth would be coming in swelled up pretty significantly. I called my doctor's office, spoke to the nurse and got some advice. Later the gum on the right side swelled up more and turned purple. I did some research and read about "eruption cysts" and that they were normal. I emailed the doctor and was told that children don't teethe until they are 6 months old and are only "uncomfortable" for 3-5 days surrounding the erruption and that my daughter must be going through something else.

The purple resolved itself and then returned. I called the doctors office again at this point and was again given advice but no reason to think anything was wrong of that I should bring her in.

Then I had her doctor's appointment, thinking I would be vindicated in that my daughter was in fact teething. He says he has "never seen anything like this", the first two bottom teeth "don't swell up" and that the "hematoma" she has (the purple) is only seen with molars, not with first teeth. Also he consulted with another doctor in the office (who had also, never seen this before) and they decided that the "tooth" coming in may be wiggling.

So at the moment the pediatrician is consulting with an oral surgeon and will get back to me... hopefully soon.

Does anyone have any similar experiences with their child's first teeth. I am of course in a panic because I didn't bring her in earlier.

(I am also going to switch to a new pediatrician)

Thank you

Although I don't have experience with this exactly, I just wanted to chime in with agreeing you should consider finding another pedi. Babies cut their first teeth anywhere from birth to a year, and some teeth for weeks on end & some seem to sail right through it without many signs or complaints. My daughter's first tooth was showing when she went in for her 6week check-up and I've read of babies born with a tooth already showing. (not common but it happens). My granddaughter teethed (drooling, chewing, mouth soreness, red spots on her cheeks etc) for weeks & weeks before she finally popped out with a tooth at 7-8 months. Babies are all different, I don't know why your doc would say it only happens at 6mos & it only takes a couple of days.

Hi, i see why your a bit upset/worried. Switching dr's sounds like a good move. My oldest daughter didnt teeth till she was almost a year, & my 2nd daughter CUT a tooth AT 3 months! So i dont know what the dr is talkin about. Definately find a pedi who is older w/ many yrs experiance.

Good luck!!

i've never been through that but my pedi told us when my daughter was 4 mo old that her teeth would be coming any day after examining her mouth. But they actually sat in her gums until she was a year old before they decided to start popping out. But you could actually see the lines from the teeth in her gums. I don't know but I think the best advice I can give you it to seek a second opinion and start researching another pedi to do that. If it were me that is what I would do quickly.

My 4th child had this and I know one of the teeth that it happened to was one of his top front teeth and it also happened to his eye teeth. I think this happened to atleast 4 of his teeth and it seemed to last about a month and then would go away and a couple weeks later he would get a tooth. I was quite horrified by the look of it the first time I saw it as I had never seen anything like it before. All of his teeth came through with no problem. good luck !

Don't panic. Not all pedi's know everything about teething. My youngest got teeth at about 6 weeks old. After all some kids are born with teeth. If you are very worried you are definately doing the right thing by trying another pedi. but who is to say this type of thing won't happen again where the pedi doesn't seem to think their is a problem, when in fact their is. Your the parent, and if you think their is some issue with your child take them to the doctor. What's the worst you made a trip for nothing? Anyway do you try brushing the gums to keep them clean? I know with my 6 yr old and his new front tooth that's been coming in for the last year (it was pulled) he gets the same hematoma from time to time. We just keep it as clean as possible. Which helps for now. Other than that they tell me their isn't anything else to do but wait for the tooth to come in. Hope all is better for you. And the new pedi works out.
