For the past 5-6 months I’ve have difficulty with tailbone pain. I didn’t fall or anything it just started to hurt especially while I sit and nurse my 11 month old. When I talked with other moms with young children this seems to be a common issue. Does anyone have ideas on what is causing it and how to make it stop?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for the advice. I'm going to start with my doctor to rule out a cyst then check into massage and chiropractor help as well. Hope something helps!

I have not been through a pregnancy yet, but I am currently seeing a physical therapist because of my tailbone pain (or coccydynia). I think that the pressure put on your pelvic floor muscles in pregnancy can weaken them. My PT and I are working on strengthening my core muscles. Here's some more info. on what you may be experiencing: http://www.coccyx.org/whatisit/symptoms.htm
So far, in addition to stretches and strengthening exercises, it seems to help to activate my core muscles and use my legs more as I'm sitting down or getting up ('cause that's when my pain is worse). Hope you get some relief soon.

I have had back pain while nursing as well although it was not tail bone, but lower back. I found that trying to sit up stright while nursing helped with a nursing stool. Also, I started to lay down on my back which helped immensly. I just draped the baby over my body or did side lying. This seemed to help my back recover so that that I could start over new with my posture. Although it sounds like your problem may be differnt than mine, I hope this helps!

Good luck!

The pelvis undergoes so much stress with childbirth, there are a number of reasons the tailbone with hurt post-partum.

1. Hemorrhoids! This can cause a deep, dull pain, generally with sitting and may not have any symptoms related to bowel movements. Dr.'s Hubbard and Gardner are excellent support for this at ###-###-####.

2. Piriformis muscle spasm~ Also aggravated by sitting and often better with movement. The pelvis has a great assortment of muscles that can easily become hypertonic (painful) after childbirth. This can be remedied with a few treatments of massage therapy. Visit me (S. H.) at the Natural Health Center clinic, ###-###-####.

3. Sacrum out of alignment~ Also very common with childbirth. Can easily be corrected with spinal manipulation from your favorite chiropractor or naturopath.

I work for a chiropractor, and he is probably the first person I would see regarding this issue, since the tailbone is a part of your spine. Let me know if you need a referral to someone in your area (if you're in Washington, we probably know someone around you)! Good luck!

I havent' read through other responses yet.. but it might be the chair or how your back and legs are lined up while you are nursing your baby. Are you hunching over here while you are nursing? or leaning way back? she may still need a pillow to prop up her head while nursing - you should make it so that neither of you have to strain to make nursing possible..

how often are you nursing her now? if it is not too often and you could avoid falling asleep during the process (unless you can afford a nap with her) .. try laying down to nurse her... this might be more cuddly for the two of you it she is doing it mostly for comfort at this age...

if you have tried some things and it does not help.. see a doctor - or even before that call your local LaLeche League, they are the experts in nursing and will probably be able to give you advice for FREE.

I had tailbone pain for years and finally talked to my doctor about it-she said I had a little cyst. It would hurt worse when I had PMS (fluid build up). She said that if it got really bad that she could drain it but since it would come and go I never had to have it done. Eventually it quit bothering me at all-I think it may have drained on its own. Here's a link...http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/pilonidal-cyst/DS00747 it says it's more common in men than women but the only other people I've known with one are women. Maybe it's because we're more likely to talk about our tailbones lol.

Good luck!
