Tailbone Pain Following Birth?

My son is 4.5 months and I'm experiencing extreme soreness in my tailbone, almost like I fell down on the pavement. I didn't have back labor or anything like that - but I noticed this really started when I returned to work (I have a desk job where I mostly sit.) I made an appointment with a chiropractor but I've never done chiropractic and have no idea if this will be helpful.

Did anyone else have this experience and if so did it resolve? Thanks!

I'm a chiropractic assistant. A good chiropractor will definately do you some good! Don't be scared, it's no big deal, and you will feel better soon!

I am a physical therapist and have had a couple of patients with this pain during and after pregnancy. I recommend that you first check to make sure you are sitting with good posture and low back support. Try rolling up a hand towel and place it behind your lower back (just above waistline) to maintain the natural inward curve there. That should result in tilting your pelvis so that there is less pressure on your tailbone and shifts more pressure to your "sit" bones (where your thighs meet your butt) instead. This will hopefully reduce the pain. Remember, also, that your body's joints are still "tightening" back up for up to 9-12 months after delivery due to the hormones in your body that caused everything to loosen up for delivery. If that doesn't help, I would recommend you go get an evaluation by a PT for further instruction and exercises. I would be hesitant to try a chiropracter right now because I think what you need more is stability (strengthening and support), not mobility which is what chiropractic manipulation would do for you. Good luck!

You can buy a donut at a drug store to sit on, or make sure that you have great posture at work. I haven't used a chiropractor, but my acupuncturist is great!

My Mom got tailbone pain with her birth.
Tailbones, take a LONG time to heal and it hurts because it is in an inconvenient place...
And yes, she said her tailbone felt like it was broken.

Sitting on a "donut" helps a lot. It looks like an inflatable swim ring... but for the rear end to sit on. You can probably find it at Long's drug stores or anyplace like that.

good luck,
Susan

yes! with my second (very big baby boy!) i had this and it was so painful. i could not sit down on the floor (or anywhere that wasn't soft) and it hurt even when i walked with each step...it was like that whole area was bruised inside or something. it finally did resolve for me on its own. i didn't see a chiropractor or anything. it took about a year and a half to heal, gradually getting better over time. then when i had my third child i didn't have any problems at all. weird. i hope you are able to find some relief. take care.

I did not have tailbone issues, but during pregnancy I did visit a chiropractor for my sciatica and he helped IMMENSELY! I would definitely recommend visiting one, at least for a consultation! :)

My cousin actually snapped her tailbone during delivery and didn't know it til much later. There's not much they could do for her--just let it heal on it's own...hope the chiropractor helps!

The chiropractor will most likely help but as others have said tailbones take a LONG time to heal ... and with you sitting most of the day it may take longer. Might I suggest a "tush cush" ... they are a little pricey but I sit on mine every day at work, even when my back/tail bone are in good health because it promotes proper posture as well as takes pressure off my tail bone. It truly is a miracle maker.

My baby (9 1/2 lbs!) popped my tailbone out of place when she was born. It was extremely painful, especially when trying to sit or walk. I went to the chiropractor, and it was almost immediately resolved. The thing about chiros is that especially if you have been living with it for a little while, one trip will probably not do the trick. Your muscles very well could pull your bones back, but if you go a few times, then your muscles will loosen up, and allow your tailbone to stay in place. I thank heaven for my chiro, he is an angel!!

Yes! I have this sometimes. I have a 4 month old baby boy and it randomly happens to me. It's not bad enough that I need to go see anyone or anything. Just pressure. I DO have pain at my epidural site though!~ Now that's another story! Ugh!
