Taking 1 Year Old Out in the Snow...

I've been on here all day reading randoms posts, and it just occured to me that within the hour, I'm supposed to be taking about 9 kids sledding (with their parents, of course)... I haven't even stopped to think about what to do with my son (d'oh!)... He's a few days shy of turning 1... I can bundle him up like crazy, but I know he's not going to like it and I'm worried about his poor little face (they don't make baby ski masks that I know of!)... I guess I'm staying home? We don't have to drive anywhere, everyone else is coming here... I'm not sure what to do. Have you taken your little one out in the snow? I feel like he would be okay for short intervals of time... but I'm not sure I want to put forth the effort to bundle, unbundle, rebundle, etc... Let me know what you would do! I really don't mind staying home (it's warm!!), but I'd hate to miss seeing my older kiddos having a blast :/

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks SO MUCH ladies! You definately squashed my fear of bringing him out. I did get a few raised eyebrows when we got the the sledding hill, but the baby was SO GOOD! He loved watching the other kids. For the most part, I held him, but he's a fatty and when he got too heavy, I stuck him in his stroller with our friends chihuahua and they kept each other warm :) The best advice was the vaseline on his face... I didn't have any, but I used chapstick and it did the job. Every 20 minutes of so we would 'defrost' in the car with the heat going, then go back out. He had so much fun! I think if we go again today, we'll go down the bunny slope together :) THANKS AGAIN!! I'm SOOOO glad I didn't miss out on that, thank you thank you thank you :)

There is no reason why I would stay home from sledding for an almost one year old. I'm betting he'd have some fun out there, too! Mine did!

Go for it! My son was 19 months last year when we got a blizzard and we took him out sledding. He LOVED going down the hills on the sled!

Dress him the same as you dress yourself, plus 1 layer. Put vaseline on his cheeks, nose and lips to help protect them from the cold.

Oh, and if its sunny out, don't forget the sunscreen!

Bundle that boy up and go have fun! :) We just went to our local Zoo to see the Christmas lights and had our 1 year old there. I put him in his stroller and put blankets on him too. Do you have a stroller you can take with you? Might be a little hard to push it through the snow but you can put blankets on him in addition to his coat, hat and mittens.

I definately would bundle him up, few layers under snow suit, mittens, hat scarf!!!! Take him out!!!! Don't miss fun times in the snow! I do home daycare...have a 7 month old daycare baby...my kids are 9 and 6...took all of them sledding. Of course, with the baby I was very gentle and didn't go super crazy...but, I put I him in my lap and slowly scooted down small hills....and he loved it! We were out for about an hour...I had a stroller and would set him down for a bit and cover him up with a blanket...which he would only sit for a moment..then wanted me to pick him up and go again!
Go and have LOTS of fun!!!!!! =)

Putting layers of clothes on children is actually a bad idea. It will make them sweat and it could make them sick. (sweating in the cold is not good). Put vaseline or chap stick on his face, lips, and nose. It will keep him from getting chapped. Here is how I dressed mine at that age: Onesie (sp), sweat shirt, long john pants, sweat pants, socks, shoes, and snow suit. (that is not considered "layered" clothing. Yes, take him outside and even get on the sled yourself, put him on your lap, and have fun. He will love it and he will get an amazing nights sleep. Once you see his nose and face starting to get red, it's time to go inside. A tip from ABC news. Have fun tonight. With the weather we got, it should be perfect for sledding.

My son (1.5) HATED the snow when we took him out in it earlier this week. He was bundled but it was slippery and he kept falling and the wind was kind of fierce! I would bundle your son and put him into a stroller - that way he can stay contained. Or if you have a baby carrier, put him in it and just opt out of sledding yourself.

He will pick up on your attitude. If YOU think he won't like it, then he WON'T. IF you go into this thinking THIS IS GOING TO BE FUN! (and mean it!!) it will be!

Like all people - layers are important in these cold conditions. You should be able to put Vaseline on his face to help with the cold - if he won't wear a scarf over his face.

A warm hat is the most important thing next to layering. If he gets too hot in the snow suit, you can take something off - you don't need to keep running in and out. That's what layering is all about!

HAVE A BLAST!!!

I'd bundle him and put some vaseline on his little face .... the oil keeps you warm because it insulates as well as protects. Enjoy.

It's what you can't bundle that needs it the most-those tiny little airways! They are too little to withstand cold temps-:( can you keep him in the stroller with him fully tented?

My daughter loved going out in the snow. Even at 1 year old. Just bundle them up nice & warm, keep checking to make sure he doesn't get too cold and go have fun. No, I don't think they make baby ski masks. Just do hat, gloves, warm coat, thick socks, boots etc...and he'll be just fine. Have fun :)
