Taking Advil or Tylenol Pregnant

I am over 33 weeks pregnant and yesterday I took some advil and my mom freaked on when she heard.
First of all I am a super careful pregnant person. I don't take any other medications during the entire pregnancy(and I get SEVERE allergies during the spring), I don't drink caffine at all, I drop nearly all processed sugars and any unessecary sodium, and I don't do pretty much everything else that is considered unsafe, and I also am a fanatic about my vitamins including past the normal prenatal pack.
I have however taken advil and tylenol alternately through the pregnancy. I take the dosage suggested and have taken maybe 2 of each 2 times a month. Now in the last month I have taken it a little more, at the most one of each kind once a week. It has been a very difficult pregnancy and on top of that I have suffered with pretty severe fibromylagia for a very long time so for me I am not taking nearly what I would like to, but on really painful nights I absolutly can not sleep without a bit of relief.
So my question is is this not safe for the baby? I always assumed that these type of medications were ok, especially taken in what I considered moderation. Maybe it is not moderation? Has anyone else had thier Dr. tell them it is not ok?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Wow!! Thank you for the responses. I have looked up nearly everything else reguarding pregnancy and I guess it just never occured to me that it would not be ok as long as I didn't take it too much. This is my second pregnancy as well and don't ever remember either Dr. telling me not to take it...which would have definently stood out considering that when not pregnant I take it quite often since it is the only thing that will help a bit with my pain from fibromyalgia.
I will not take any more for sure and I have another appointment in a few days so I will tell the Dr. Hopefully it has not done any damage, that would be so devastating!

As long as you take them in moderation, it can be okay. Tylenol DOES affect the liver development of babies and there was just a study released in the last couple of weeks in relation to this... it stands to reason that if a baby is affected by tylenol, than a developing fetus will be also. So, it's a risk/benefits thing - if it's once a week, it should be okay, but more than that could potentially pose a risk... Is there any alternative pain relief you can try? Homeopathic or external, like Biofreeze or something? Chamomile tea might help with sleep too. :)

Tylenol is what your doctor should have told you to take for any issues. You should probably call your doctor and ask them about it. I'm sure everything is okay, but my doctor did specifically tell me to use Tylenol (or other acetominophen) and not Advil (Ibuprofen). Don't take any other Advil! Here's some explanation:

Consult your doctor but you shouldn't take ibuprofen or asprin when you are pregnant. Tylenol (or equivalent) is ok, as is Excedrin if you get the kind w/out Asprin. Surprised your doctor didn't give you list of safe products during pregnancy.

I was told absoultely no advil. And no extra strength tylenole. Just regular old tylenole. Advil has Ibprofen in it which is, as stated below, the exact same drun in a different consentration used to help infants ducts close. It can cause the ducts to close in utero. Hate to tell you, your mother is right. Please call the doctor and let them know that you have been taking this so they can make sure all is ok now and at birth.

You need to contact your doctor right away. Ibuprofen is a big no no! Not sure how familiar you are with anatomy, but when a baby is in utero, baby receives oxygen and nutrients via the umbilical cord and placenta. When a baby is born and the cord is clamped, a duct allowing access to the umbilical cord closes (as it is no longer needed), and blood is rerouted to the baby's heart and lungs, as baby is able to self-sustain outside of the mother. As per my OB, ibuprofen is actually the same or similar drug given to infants at birth, whose umbilical ducts do not close, and can cause severe comlications. So when you are taking ibuprofen, baby is getting ibuprofen as it crosses the placenta and can cause the umbilical duct to close prematurely, cutting off baby's access to oxygen and nutrients via the umbilical cord.

A little known fact is that ibuprofen can be safely taken in pregnancy up until the 26th week (thru 2nd trimester) in moderation. But because ultrasound and week of gestation are estimations, OB's err on the side of caution and just tells moms to avoid it all together.

Of course, I am not a doctor. But if I were you, I would stop taking it immediately and consult with your OB and let her plan a course of treatment. Better safe than sorry! Good luck.

You are not supposed to take Ibuprofen during pregnancy especially during the last trimester. You should probably call your dr. Tylenol is ok

According to this answer, it looks like you're probably all right as long as you don't take any more Advil, but absolutely talk to your doctor. Good luck.

NO ADVIL!!
The tylenol is fine but the advil is not.
Talk to your dr. and let them know that you've been taking it and they will explain why you shouldn't and to make sure you stop. If you cannot sleep tell your dr. as well. I had the same issue when I was preggo and they told me to take tylenol pm because it would help me sleep through the pain. Maybe they will recommend that for you as well.

I would have to say I agree with everyone, but just to put your mind at ease a little, aspirin is another BIG nono, I however have a clotting disorder and have been FORCED to take it since finding out I was pregnant. I won't stop until just before giving birth. So while some things have risks and you shouldn't take them, at the same time chances are good that baby is just fine, so call the doc, and make sure, and stick with tylenol, but don't flip out and beat yourself up over it.

My Dr. told me to ONLY take Tylenol. Obviously, you can continue taking Tylenol, but stop with the others. My Dr. said I could take Tylenol PM at the end, to help me sleep. You should call you Dr and make them aware of the fact, that you've taken ibuprofen at the end of your pregnancy...they might want to check some things just to be sure. With that said, you're probably totally fine...it's worth checking out though!

Tylenol is OK, for any other medications, ask your doctor about it because there are some, like aspirin, that are big no nos; however, if your doctor approved, I guess it should be OK.
If you're in doubt about anything, don't do it and ask your obstetritian first (better safe than sorry ;-)

I haven't read all of the responses, but it looks like you have gotten some good ones based on your "so what happened" comments. The little that I did say says that Tylenol is fine/safe, etc. It is not. It can cause liver disease. There are some homeopathic remedies that I would recommend above tylenol/advil, etc. However, having said that, I do on occasion, for severe issues, take a minimum amount of these drugs. I hate to do it, but sometimes I need the extra bit of relief. Blessings to you!

Tylenol is fine, advil, motrin, ibuprofen and aspirin are big no no's. Talk to your doctor so they can give you a good explanation why.

Advil (or anything containing ibuprophen) can thin your blood and prevent clotting. Tylenol is okay and is the only safe pain reliever during pregnancy. But advil is not. I had surgery 1 month ago and was not allowed to take advil for 6 weeks prior to the surgery due to this concern. Especially since you are getting closer to your due date its not safe and can cause complications when you deliver. If you are so uncomfortable that you cannot sleep you really need to stress that point to your doc. I have fibromyalgia too and my doctor was able provide suggestions and alternatives to help. I was able to get some massages and because they were prescribed by the doc it insurance paid for part. They were really great to help me relax and ease the discomfort. Good Luck.

I was always told that the only safe medication during pregnancy was Tylenol. You really shouldn't take the Advil unless you talk to your doctor about it first. I hope you get through the rest of your pregnancy without as much pain. I'm sorry you're not feeling well. Hang in there!

Definately talk to your doctor and tell him/her what you have taken, how much and when. Then find out what he/she says you can take.

There is a severe misconception that because a medication is over the counter, it must be totally safe. That is not always the case, and there are always contraindications (reasons you shouldn't take it).

Please do not take another medication until you hear from the docotor's mouth what is ok, and what isn't.

Do not stress about the past, it is done. Just inform the doctor and look to the present and future.

Take care,

I lived on Tylenol while I was pregnant. I had severe hormonal headaches and my doctor said two tablets two times a day every day if needed would be just fine. I didn't have any problems.

What you do not want to take is IBprofin (in Motrin and other pain meds) or asprin.

Ask your dr at your next visit...but I think you'll be fine!

E.,

I am a fellow fibro sufferer, so I feel your pain (gentle hugs)! Have you tried Epsom salt baths? they do help when I get into a bad pain flair. I am debating about getting pregnant again because of my fibro. Fortunately, when I was pregnant with my daughter, my fibro got better. I would definitely talk to your dr. about pain relief. My dr. prescribed darvocet when I was pregant, which sorry to say, didn't help that much. but I would definitely not take advil as it is not recommended during pregnancy. Hope you find some relief!
