Taking Care of My Pregnant Self

I'm nearly 13 weeks along and I'm really having a hard time eating and drinking enough. I'm a SAHM of a just turned 1 year old. He's very active too. I've lost 2-3lbs in my first trimester. I did/do have excess baby weight from the first baby, about 15lbs. So I wasn't too worried initially. But now I notice day after day I'm barely eating enough and definitely not drinking enough. This new baby doesn't like large meals, so I need to do small frequent meals. I feel guilty that I cared for my nutrition/hydration so much with my first and now am struggling with this baby. How do you other moms make the time to care for your pregnant self while caring for other children and running the household??

What can I do next?

I have 4 small kids, I work and I homeschool them. I know busy.

You HAVE to eat and drink enough water to keep you out of the hospital for an emergency c-section for pre-eclampsia when your kidneys and liver become too overwhelmed to work properly. Would you starve your 1 year old or not give him water because you are busy? Then don't do it to your baby.

Set a timer for every 30 minutes and go take in 4oz of water. Have it all ready by the timer. The night before, after your 1 year old is in bed, prepare your food for the next day - it might take you 15-20 minutes to prepare....but then you'll grab it the next day and actually eat.

Good luck. We moms know how hard it is...and once the little one is born, it does not get any easier as far as time....so prepare your foods and drink your water. Your unborn baby with thank you.

I don't really have experience with being home with a baby while pregnant, so I can only guess how your days go, but I'd suggest that whenever your one year old is having something, you should too. If you're making him an egg for breakfast, make one for you. Snack time? If your baby's having a yogurt, so should you. If he's having an applesauce when he wakes up from his nap, grab one for yourself. I'm sure you feed your baby healthy foods throughout the day, so follow the same for yourself and place filled, chilled water bottles throughout the house so that where ever you are, you've got one ready.
Good luck

small frequent meals are so much better for you! set yourself up for success. get a water bottle that pleases you and keep it near you all day, getting into the habit of taking frequent drinks whether or not you're thirsty. your body will adapt to the healthy level of hydration and start requesting it correctly once you convince it you're really NOT a camel. do the same thing with sprouted raw nuts, easy-access fruit like bananas, grapes and apples, and small granola or protein bars. if you have to stop and prepare a meal you're much less likely to do it, so keep easy healthy food and water right there available. it's a great thing to do for your growing family too! you want your kids to reach for raisins or an apple or a glass of water when they're hungry, so set a pattern now.
congrats and good luck!

Welcome to parenting more than one kid! You will be amazed by how differently you do things with kid number two!

The first step to taking care of yourself is being gentle on yourself. ;-)

Eat and drink when your 1 year old eats and drinks.

I lost weight during my first trimester this pregnancy as well. I didn't want to eat anything! My doc said it was completely normal and now I'm almost 30 weeks and have to keep an eye on what I'm eating because my appetite is definitely back with full force! You'll hopefully look back at these days and chuckle, wishing you could control your appetite again. ;-) Good luck!

It's normal to lose weight the first trimester. It's also recommended to eat small, healthy meals and snacks throughout the day. I nibble on a piece of cheese, peanut butter on apples, handful of almonds and dark chocolate, carrots, hard boiled eggs, avocado, granola bites, grapes... Just have these little snack type foods ready and waiting for you so that during the day you can just grab a quick bite. And carry around a jug of ice water and drink it as often as you can.

Hang in there mama and congrats on your new little one! I just wanted to encourage you that you will be a-ok :) With my third I lost a bit the first trimester and by 20 wks had only gained three pounds bc I was kind of sick, but after I started feeling better I put on weight just fine and my baby was born totally healthy. The main thing really is to take care of yourself so you don't feel crummy bc the baby is going to pull what they need from you. The main concern is dehydration of course. So just keep a glass of water with you and sip it and refill when it is done. If you are not a big water drinker you can do gatorade. I actually drank half caff tea when I was pregnant bc I enjoyed the flavor and it was so hydrating!! Take care!
