I tandem nursed when they were little and while it was overwhelming at times my two kids, age 12 and and 9, now act like they are twins. They are close, closer than most kids. They don't have fights. They might disagree, and they might not always see eye to eye but they treat each other with respect. I can't say for sure it was the tandem nursing, but 9 years later I think it was part of the reason why they both love each other and we don't have the sniping and name calling that other families have.

Let the newborn nurse first and as long as they need. Make sure they are getting enough of the fatty hindmilk. When I was beginning tandem nursing with a couple of my kids, the baby's bms started getting green and frothy because my toddler was getting too much hindmilk. Your body will eventually regulate it, but be careful. You might at times resent the toddler nursing, because you feel so protective of the newborn.

That said, it can be a great experience lessening jealousy and encouraging bonding!

Awesome tandem nursing forum!

I'm nursing a 4 month old & soon to be 3 year old. We've had a pretty easy time of it. What I'm most impressed with is that I've no jealousy issues with my toddler. Sure, she sometimes asks for me to put the baby down so she can have chi chi, but she's never ever shown any aggression or negative feelings towards the baby. I think this has to do with her still being able to nurse & feel like she's close & special to me; still my baby, too.

I don't linke the feeling of nursing them both at the same time, for some reason. It just irritates me, so I only do that if they're both inconsolable. I'm also bummed to find that I don't enjoy my husband's attention in that area as much. Sometimes it's okay & sometimes it's downright uncomfortable; it's never as nice as it used to be. I'm certain it'll be better once I'm not nursing so often.

kellymom is great. Also, try getting in touch with your local La Leche League. They are a wonderful source of information and support. You'll find other moms there who have been through this and can offer you support. Good luck!

My second daughter was born when my first was 21 months. I nursed them both until the older turned 3. It has been a great part of my mothering experience. I hope you enjoy it!!
