Any thoughts on the new Disney Movie, Tangled? A revised version of Rapunzel . We were having a discussion about it at work and wanted to hear your thoughts on it !

So What Happened?

There's Nothing wrong with it - I think it looks Great ! Just some of the "older" people were commenting on how it seems much more for a 'mature audience' and that they were kinda taken a'back by the New Disney vs. old school Disney. I hope that the story does show girls that we dont "need" a man! Enjoy the Show :-) lol

I think it is a Disney version based on Rapunzel , does not follow the story completely but has the Princess in a tower with the long hair. Just like Sleeping Beauty , Disney changed that story a little but still a cute film for little girls , and I am taking my girls to see it.

I just heard it's great for girls AND boys, which is a relief since my son fears it is "all princess-y"!

My girls and I have been eagerly waiting for this one! I can't wait to see it with them. From what I understand, it's a bit of a departure from the usual Disney princess-needs-a-man-to-save-her movie and is more of an adventure movie with a capable female heroine. There's still the love story, of course, but I'm curious to see how far they stray from their usual formula. Can't WAIT!

I'll do some research before I take our 4 1/2 yo... Sometimes Disney films strike me as a touch too violent for the 5 and younger crowd--especially the older films like Snow White & Cinderella. They don't portray the best in step-mother relationships. After all, it's Snow White's step-mother who tries to have her killed. And quite a few other movies have plots that involve the character's parent dying. Disney plots can be just a bit dark.

I don't mind that Tangled doesnt tell the original storyline (Is that the controversy?). I think I'll read her the original and then after seeing the movie, talk about how one story can inspire other stories, similarities/differences. There's also a Barbie DVD "Rapunzel" which isn't exactly true to the original storyline).

What is wrong with it??? I can't wait to take my 2 girls to see...My oldest is going on 4 & grandpa had to get her a doll for Christmas..As with all the Disney princess movies it's about dressing up pretty manners falling in love with the nicest man in the world...Sure hoping they come out with Birthday party items will need thin in Jan.
Don't remeber the old version of Rapunzel...

I think it looks adorable and want to try and take my 3 year old to see it. However she's only been to 1 movie so I"m not sure she's ready to sit through the entire movie, let alone one in 3D!

My 5-year-old and I saw it on Wednesday. It's cute, but wasn't an instant favorite. We didn't like the 3-D either. There were a couple of plot twists that seemed a little complex for younger kids, but overall it was an enjoyable movie. It's Disney - there's always a dark tone lurking in the storyline, they're way too focused on how the girl looks, there always has to be a "prince" involved, etc. You have to take it all with a grain (or two) of salt and try to neutralize some of the crazier ideas after viewing. When we see a movie that is based on a book, we always discuss the differences in each, and which story or parts we like more.

Rapunzel in the movie took a lot more risks and was way more outspoken than Cinderella, Snow White or Aurora. But I felt like she was still pretty dependent on the man (although being locked in a tower for 18 years may be a pretty good excuse for that!), and in the end, even though she made a big decision on her own, the man ended up "saving" her (hope that doesn't give away too much for those who haven't seen it!).

I check out commonsensemedia.com when I don't know enough about a new movie. They have extremely detailed parent reviews, and ratings for different age groups.

Is it supposed to be controversial? As with all Disney movies there are adult inuendoes. They arent as wholesome as they used to be.
I'm used to the old Rapunzel story, but apparently progress is going to change that. From the previews it looks pretty cute but also seems like it would be for a more mature child as far as the story line goes.

Responding to your "what happened". I haven't seen the movie, but my son's 2nd grade is going next wednesday, so I am assuming it is not for a more "mature" audiance. I also enjoy a classic but a new twist helps make it more tangible to kids today. And yea I hope the message is girls can do it for themselves!!!
