Hello my daughter is 2 1/2. She has very long hair for her age. It is half way down her back and wavy. It is beautiful but a pain to take care of. It is so tangly that it is a fight just to get her to let me brush her hair. I have tried the de -tangling shampoo and spray on conditioner. I have tried a brush and comb to see if one was gentler on her. The only time I can brush it fairly easy is right after her bath. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do to make her hair less tangly?

What can I do next?

Thanks to everyone for there advice. My daughter refuses to let me put her hair in a ponytail or braid. She rips it out within minutes. I will try some of the products you have recommened and see if they work for Madalyn. Thamks

Sounds like my now 11 year old daughters hair. I use to always keep it braided. Now she is able to keep it up herself. After every bath, I would just do another braided style. Kept her hair from tangles, kept her happy, and made my life easier not having to fight her everyday to keep it up.

I had the same problem with my daughter. In addition to being long and wavey it was extreamly thick, and stil is. I wanted to keep her hair long, but I knew I was fighting a loosing battle, everyone was getting tired of the daily "hair drama".
I always was able to do many different types of braids on my own hair, but because I learned on myself, I was never any good at braiding other peoples hair. I made an effort to learn how to do very tight braids on her hair. Even though we went though the same drama when braiding her hair, if the braids are done tight enough they will last between washings. I would take a nickle sized glob of regular conditionar and run it thought her hair, and then after combing it out braid it as tight as I could get it. I would get a day or two out of the braids then when I took them out her hair was tangle free and some times good for another day. I hope this helps.

My daughter has this same problem. You didn't mention this problem, but her hair is also very "fly away". We love Seastian's Potion 9 leave in treatment. It's a little spendy (around $16 a tube) but it works wonders. You just put about a nickle size amount on your hand, rub your hands together, and then smooth onto and into hair. Directions say to use on towel dried, but we use it on dry as well. Her hair still gets tangly, I think that's just the nature of the beast, but the tangles aren't as bad and are easier to work out. As an added bonus, it smells nice, too. I would also suggest that you brush her hair before bed and, if it's long enough, put it into a braid.
Good Luck!

I baby-sit a little girl who has the same problem. The best thing I ever found was Equate (Wal-Mart brand) de-tangling spray. I would spray that into her hair and then use a round-tipped wide tooth comb working the ends first and then working my way up. Speaking reassuringly to her as I worked and telling her that I knew it hurt a little, but it had to be done. After a while she would calm down and let me finish. Being as young as she is, you could also give her a shorter hair-cut, say about shoulder-length. That may make it easier to take care of her hair until she's old enough to do it herself. Best of luck to you!

I have a two year old with naturally curly hair, and the best way to brush is to put conditioner on her hair, let her play for a while in the tub, before rinsing comb with a large toothed comb. Works for my little ones. Good luck!

I have an 11 year old who I have had hair problems with for years, I have found a couple of products that work very well. One is Biosilk, you do put it in after washing her hair, but it make the hair alot easier to comb the next day, if needed you can spray it down a little with water and it works great! The Biosilk is a little pricy, so the other thing that works well is Garnier Fructis, sleek & shine antifrizz serum. It is also a leave in and it works the same. I hope that this helps, I know that it has helped us out with the problems of getting her to comb her hair!

No more tears sweetie. My daughter is 3 and we both have very long curly hair that is hard to get tangles out of. Here's how to do it. First use an adult conditioner that is creamy and brush her hair while the conditioner is still in her hair and then make sure you can get a comb through it before rinsing. When you rinse her hair be sure to leave a little in it.(only a tiny bit) This is very important because if you rinse all of it then you have a fight on your hands when you dry the hair. Please don't cut the beautiful locks! B.

Hi there! My daughter had the same problem. Here's what works great for us. I wash her hair with a detangling shampoo, then I put some of MY conditioner in her hair (I use alot)...leave it in for 10 mins. or so.Time of leaving the conditioner on depends on the size of the knot(s). My daughter gets this huge knot right in the middle, on the back of her head. I then brush it out gently with a wide tooth comb as I pour water on her hair...until no more knots. After that, I spray in- a leave in moisturizer/conditioner. Then I smooth Biosilk Hair Serum in her hair...and EXCELLENT results pretty much all day. Ofcourse at night I for sure braid her hair...helps so much.

If you start at the bottom and work your way up it becomes much easier their are less tangles to deal with at a time also I comb my daughter's hair while her de-tangling conditioner is still in it in the tub. then I just let her play for about 5 min before I rinse it as for the next day I just spray and start at the bottom I also have kept trimming it so as to get the baby hair out.

you've gotten a lot of good advice. i have long curly/wavy hair too. and yes, its a hastle. like everyone else...wash, put conditioner and then braid it or put in a ponytail. as far as product is concerned. i personally use f/x silk drops. use literally only a drop and distribute it through her hair (wet or dry). hope this helps.
also, if you chose to get her hair cut. please, please remember to get someone that knows how to cut curly/wavy hair. this will mean a lot less frustration later down the line. a good cut will help with managing frizzies later. trust me i spent years crying about a new hair cut because it wasn't the right cut for the type of hair i have. some people will say its all the same but it is not the same.
good luck with whatever choice you make with your daughters hair. and happy holidays and happy new year.

Cut it! I am a former hair stylist and I know how painful it can be to have those baby locks cut off, but it will be easier in the long run...and when she gets older she will be able to help tend her hair more effectively.

If you absolutely don't want to cut her hair, try this. I know it sounds cheesy, but if you go to any Wal-Mart, they should have this product called Hask Placenta. You can buy it in a small spray bottle, or in vials, and it's a yellowish color that looks like it has stuff settled in the bottom, but you shake it up and it gets foggy. It is sort of a leave in conditioner that's a LOT more effective than any I have ever tried. I had really long wavy hair and this made it very managable.

M., my mom had this same fight with my sister and I growing up! Now my son's hair is getting long (I just can't bring myself to cut it...yet!) and I recently had to buy the No-More-Tears spray in conditioner. And we have the same thing--it works well when his hair is wet right out of the tub, but it's usually tangly again when he wakes up the next morning. What I've decided--as long as it looks halfway decent and isn't getting tangled to the point that I'd have to cut the knots out, I just leave it!
Your daughter's hair is much longer though, and I wouldn't want to cut it either. Maybe you could wet it down every morning and spray in the conditioner and then just leave it for the day? I know I never brush my own curly/wavy hair. I simply put leave in conditioner in out of the shower and let it dry. Brushing makes wavy and curly hair frizz like you wouldn't believe! My mom just eventually left my sister and I's hair when we were little and would just ensure that it wasn't getting huge knots.
Good luck, I hope you don't have to cut that beautiful hair!

I have the same problem with my daughters hair! And to make matters worse she has recently started twirling her hair when she is bored! I usually use my shampoo and conditioner because it seems to help a lot more with tangles than kids stuff. Some brushes work a lot better, but my DD demands one certain brush that doesnt work as well, but at least she doesnt fight me as bad! Also sometimes I put a whole bunch of conditioner in and let her play for a while in the bath without washing it out so it really gets in there.

Dear M.,
I myself have very long hair so I know what you and your daughter are going through. The key to your problem lies with "the only time I can brush it fairly easy is right after her bath." Simple solution put her hair in at least 2 braids to sleep in. This has helped me a lot because when I don't braid my hair when I wake up its next to impossible to run a brush or comb through my mop. In the morning you undo each braid and comb through it before moving to the next one. By the time you have finished unbraiding the last braid her hair has been brush and you can even style it while doing the comb out.
Another solution is based on the first one I wrote about. The newest fashion in hair is to put 1 ponytail on top of the head and then make as many braids from that as you can. I have seen as many as 6-8 braids in the ponytail. Easy to manage as well. All you do is wash the hair still in braids and then when you go to dry the hair you undo one braid and redo it at a time. As long as the main ponytail is not smushed you should be able to get by with not rebrushing/combing the entire head for a while. I hope some of this helps. W. H.

Maybe learn how to braid it. I loved haveing a french braid in my hair right out of the bath when I was a kid. i have thick hair and it would kinda thin out a bit when it dryd and I took it out of the braid and it was so beutiful the next day. I envy you for your daughter's long hair. My daughter's hair stopped growing and she kept getting ahold of sisars and it takes months for it to get to the point where I can even it out. I wish her's would grow faster. her's kinda looks like western woman's hair cut and not angelic like a little girl at all. no curls ever since she cut it off by herself the first time.

My daughter also has really long hair. It was half way down her back in April when I cut it just under her ears. Now, it's almost that long again! She HATES to have her hair brushed. I found that Huggie's has a good detangler that I like. I also found that if I let her pick out a brush at the store that is ONLY hers & she gets to brush her own hair with it after I spray the detangler, it works out pretty well. Try putting her hair in a braid when she goes to bed. That's when most of the tangles start. Good luck, Momma!!

Hi M.!
I have been a hairdresser for 16 years. The best advise I can give you is to stop using any and all tear-free products. These products are ph balenced for the tear ducts(ph 7) not the hair(ph 4.5 to 5.5).Thus drying the hair out and making it really fly away and extra frizzy. You should use the same products you would use on your own hair. Also, if you spent any time in a pool make sure you wet her hair in tap water first and wash after. A build-up of clorine can make hair very tangely. A clarifying shampoo 2 time a week in the swimming season really helps reduce build-up. If you have hard water use the clarifying shampoo all year long(about once a week). Regular trims will also be very helpful. Good Luck!

My youngest daughter has cute little locks as well. Although I don't know where she would've gotten them. Ha Ha.

I think that it is easier to manage if you put their hair up after their bath. I also use a spray bottle of water if we are going somewhere and she has not just taken a bath. She may hate it, but I regretted cutting my oldest daughter's hair for this same reason. I have learned that I and my youngest are just going to have to deal with it for the beauty of it all.

If you do use 'product' to control the frizz, just make sure you wash it out daily. Extra conditioner never worked for us either. I think you can also go to hair cutting places and ask them to put some anti frizz stuff on your daughter so you can see how it works before you buy it. They are usually glad to.

Good luck!

I grew up with very long hair and my mom would always battle with me when it came to brushing/combing my hair. Even to this day (I have hair past my shoulders) I still have problems taking out the tangles. The only thing that works for me is a paddle brush. They come oval or square and look like a pin cushion with needles in it. They are sold everywhere and work great on wet or dry hair. Here is a link for the images from a yahoo search, just copy and paste to your browser: http://images.search.yahoo.com/search/images?p=paddle%20b... Hopefully this works for untangling the hair, now keeping it untangled is another battle.

Get a trim. At two and a half, the hair on the ends is still baby hair which knots very easily. Cutting some off will help. I also find that an oval part boar bristle part plastic brush helps. I also leave the conditioner to dry (use a light or leave in) in my daughters' hair.

I have long curly hair(down to my waist)and I can understand the tangly fight. I find that if I only wash my hair twice a week it helps. Also I use John Frieda's Frizz Ease products. They work great. I also use a wide tooth comb instead of a brush. A brush just frizzes my hair and causes more tangles.

It's probably best to keep it pulled back as much as possible. I have very fine hair, and the only way I am able to keep the tangles out is to tie it back after I brush it.
