Hello Moms and moms to be!
I've heard some horror stories about delivering at Cedars. Anyone have any helpful reviews about their birthing experience at Tarzana Providence?
This is the first child for my husband and I and we would like to delivery in a hospital... but with a midwife present and and as naturally as possible.

Are there any moms out there who have seen a midwife for most of their checkups, etc (ie Tonya Brooks) and then planned a delivery in Tarzana?

If so, any recommendations for OBGYNs?
We're totally lost! We just found out that I'm 5 weeks along and I feel so rushed to get everything rolling!
Thanks in advance!

Hello,

I just wanted to say I delivered at Cedars and had a very good experience. Even with having to be induced a week over my due date (baby was born an ounce shy of 9lbs).

The staff was great and they worked well with my doula as did my ob/gyn Dr. Preys. My doula has had a lot of clients deliver at Cedars and she was fabulous herself. Only wanted to share that not all deliveries at Cedars are nightmares.

Good Luck to you,
R. K.

I had a wonderful delivery at Encino-Tarzana (Tazana campus) back in September 2008. My doctor was James Danielzadeh and he is the best!

Hi there I delivered twins there on January 30th. They were great. The hospital is across the street from my house it was a no brainer. They are wonderful, I promise you be singing there praises too. I had a C-Section and it was easy no problems or complications. I kept the babies in the nursery at night and they were fine. I also used Dr. Danielzadeh. The nurses there saw my stiches and said he does a good job. They look for doctors like that for themselves. He nice, warm, kind hearted and just a genuine person. His office manager Caroline is very sweet also. I promise will love him. Also for a fetal ultrasound doctor use Dr. Douany. He is the best in the area and very popular.

good luck.

I delivered my beautiful baby boy at Tarzana Hospital Sept, 2008 and had a very good experience. My doula was there and worked with my OB Tanaz Kahen (who is wonderful!). No pressure for drugs. They have tours a few times a month to help you feel comfortable with the place. I would highly recommend it! Good luck!

I didn't use a midwife, but I delivered at Tarzana Providence and had a really good experience. The nurses were very attentive, sensitive and helpful. I was overall very happy with how it went.

Dr. Felicia Ota is a very good doctor and her office is located right across the street from the hospital.

Good luck!

Seriously you're five weeks pregnant and you're already worried about delivery?? Relax, sister, and enjoy the ride - you've got 35 more weeks to go. :>

Tarzana is a great hospital. I delivered there. Now I did have an epidural (wonderful!!), but I was never pressured to have one. My OB is also WONDERFUL Taaly Silberstein! Taaly works with doulas, I know. Not sure about mid-wives, you can check with her office. I've also heard Dr. Cohn (not sure of his first name) is also great. Both of these doctors are in Tarzana.

Good luck and enjoy your pregnancy!!

Good morning!
I just had my baby at Tarzana three weeks ago and my OBGYN was Dr. Susman who I LOVED! I had a long labor and had three different nurses during my labor and all of them were fantastic and very caring.
The only challenge I had with Tarzana is that it is a teaching hospital, so once you go into the maternity ward you will have student nurses in and out of your room all day. Had I known that I would have just requested not to be a part of the program as it made me feel like my baby and I were a school project by the end of my stay.
Congratulations on your pregnancy!!!

Hi K., Congratulations!! Well you certainly can't go wrong with Tonya Brooks! With my second, I would have loved to hire her or another highly qualified midwife for my checkups and a homebirth if only my insurance had paid for it!! I ended up going with the midwife Betsy Jenkins (The Eisner Center) and hiring a Doula for a very good hands-off birth at California Hospital. If Tarzana Providence is the same as Tarzana-Encino the only Dr. to see there IMHO is Dr. Rebecca Perlow. She's amazing and probably saved my first daughter's life (a preemie) with her excellent care of us while on bedrest there. Calm, natural birth is her MO. Wish you all the best!! God bless ~ S.

I delivered my first baby in May 2007 at Tarzana. It was the best experience! I had my son in Jan 2009 at Hollywood Pres, and was wishing I was back in Tarzana!! My ob is Dr. Joie Russo(she's in the medical bldg next to the hospital) and she is awesome!! (she just had her 2nd baby!) I had a huge room to myself and the staff makes the whole process feel very natural, easy and expected. (especially since it was my first!) I felt so at ease knowing my dr would just have to walk a few yards to get to the hospital! Her # is ###-###-####,,tell her L. sent ya! Good Luck and Congrats!!

Hi K.,

Congratulations!

I know my cousin delivered at Tarzana and had no problems (but it was over 20 years ago!)

I delivered at Cedars and it was a great experience. I had a choice of Cedars or St. Johns - both great hospitals.

I suggest making appointments at all the hospitals you are interested in for a tour of the facilities. You'll see where the birth's take place, where you'll be after delivery and find out about the whole procedure. You'll find out if there are private rooms available or if you'll have to share. How many nurses are on the floor at one time. If they have a neonatal unit, etc. See which one you are most comfortable with before making a decision.

Good luck!

As far as doctors who deliver at Tarzana -- Dr Platt (top westside perinatologist, former head of ob/gyn at Cedars) recommended the medical practice of Dr Entin and Dr Otta (loved her -- he's very traditional -- a good doctor but pretty dispassionate otherwise). Also Dr Ohad Beh-Yehuda whom everyone loves, I know he's on the valley side, think he's currently at Tarzana, but not sure. But personally, I couldn't imagine feeling safe with just a midwife Births are ,of course, a natural event -- but in the days before doctors, they were higher risk for both mother and child. If god forbid, there were any complications -- I would worry that you would lose precious time by having to call in a doctor to take over. A midwife is not medically qualified -- and able only to handle routine situations. So I just wouldn't take the risk.

Tarzana is small, personal, and things went well for us there but I haven't been there since they got new management (past three years) -- so can't really vouch for its present incarnation
