I have been on The South Beach Diet....its a new life for me...(lost 18 lbs) I always taste pennies in my mouth. Especially when its meal time. I totally get that I have been on an iron overload...but you would think it would "pan out".....Do any of you have this South Beach "taste"?

What can I do next?

You are missing copper in your system. Trace minerals are important. Go get a B complex with trace minerals in it. Get a brand that is known to be good like Solgar or NOW. Don't go to the drug store. Buy your vitamins at the health food store.

It could be serious, or there could be a simple explanation. I would go to my doctor and have them sort it out since it could be a symptom of a serious underlying condition (even vitamin deficiency can be serious)...here's what I found for metallic taste in mouth:
"A metallic taste in your mouth is not an uncommon symptom, and metal tasting is typically not a serious problem.
Your perception of a metallic taste can be due to an assortment of metal mouth factors. However, the most common causes of the unflavorful taste of metal are medications used for treatment of:
antibiotics
kidney stones
antidepressants
prenatal vitamins
anesthetic ~ lidocaine
heart failure ~ captopril
giardiasis ~ metronidazole
trichomoniasis ~ tinidazole
CT scan ~ contrast medium
chronic alcoholism ~ disulfiram
rheumatoid arthritis ~ auranofin
high blood pressure ~ captopril
low calcium treatment ~ calcitriol
weight loss, diabetes ~ metformin
Unhealthy oral hygiene may be the cause for a metal taste symptoms in your mouth, including:
gingivitis
periodontitis
tooth infections
Some other causes and diseases that may be causing your taste to be metallic are:
cancer
food allergy
peptic ulcer
lichen planus
marine toxins
too much iron
hypercalcemia
lead poisoning
bleeding gums
kidney disease
eating pine nuts
copper overdose
selenium toxicity
iodine intoxication
mercury poisoning
cadmium poisoning
acute kidney failure
burning mouth syndrome
Calcium carbonate supplements can cause you to believe that you are eating metal as well."

You haven't been taking zinc tablets or some other cold medicine with zinc in it have you? And I know that is one antibiotic that can give a metallic taste. Other than that...I have a feeling it is something either missing in your diet or an overload of something in your diet. I would suggest that you talk to your doctor about it just for peace of mind.

Tasting copper is usually a sign of one of two things: 1) there is blood or drainage somewhere, such as an infection, sore, or sinuses. 2) you have a vitamin or mineral deficiency. Since you mention this started when you went on a diet, I would guess number two. Take a look at what your body needs and what you are giving it and keep it in mind. Losing weight is wonderful if done properly, but keep in mind that muscle mass and other aspects of your body are effected as well. Hopefully it gets better soon with some vitamins or a change in the weather (if it's sinuses).

If the problem persists, I would see a doctor as while this is not usually a sign of anything serious it can be. So just keep your over all health in mind and be on the look out for sores or deficiencies. Hope it clears up soon!
