Teenage Son with Depression

Hi Moms,

Last night my 17 y/o son told me he is worried that he is suffering from depression. His father and I have noticed over the last few months that he has become more withdrawn, not wanting to go out with friends. Additionally, he is sleeping more and more. When he gets home from school he sometimes takes a 2-3 hr nap. Do any of you know a counselor in Tarrant or Johnson Co (where we live) that is good w/teenagers? Affordable would be helpful as well.

What can I do next?

Whatever you do, don't let them put your son on Effexor or Cymbalta. Read Shelley S's question and responses about Effexor from yesterday, 26 Sep 08.

J.,
I have a 16 teenager and this summer he called me from work and said he needed help with his anger. I immediately responded to his call for help. His doctor agreed and we visited Integrated Healthworks 801 Kennedale Sublett Road Kennedale, Texas 76060 phone ###-###-####. The doctor recommended Carol Mapp and that's who we talked to. The visit went very well and she was very impressed that he was aware he needed some sort of help and glad that I didn't ignore it and let it become worse. He has had one visit with me there and three visits with just he and Carol. I think he is trying to change and she has opened his eyes to ways to deal with his issues. She has alot of teenager clients that have dealt with death at the high schools and troubles that experience at this age. I would highly recommend her to talk to and see if he is comfortable talking to her. This is a very hard age and even though my son and I are very close and talk alot about anything, he needed someone besides me to tell him he's not alone in the way he feels and there is healthy ways to deal with any issue. You are definitely on the right track in seeking help now. You don't want him to get in the wrong mix of individuals that offer choices that are wrong and he gets involved in the wrong group of teenagers. Good job mom and son. You know there's a problem now pray alot that God will guide and direct you and all things will work together for good.

We are currently in family counseling (our reason-blended family issues), at Promises in Burleson, which is the counseling center associated with First Baptist Church. We have been going since May and we have been very pleased. There are several Christian counselors on staff, and they are very affordable, in comparison to what you would pay for a professional counselor "on the street."

Here is the link, with phone #, counselor info, etc.
If you're in Johnson county, hopefully this is close to where you live.

(If for some reason the link doesn't work, just do a search for Promises First Baptist Church Burleson.)
