Hello, I am a grandmother of 3, I have 2 grown children. My question is concerning my granddaughter who turned 1 today. Sianna does not have one tooth is this normal? I remember her mother having teeth by her first birthday but my little one does not have one tooth. Someone please comment. Sianna will be going to the doctor tomorrow and I guess he will give us some kind of clue.

Thanks in advance

Hi M. - Not to worry! My son didn't get his first tooth until after his first birthday. At 3 years old, he now has a perfect set of choppers! Amazing how we all grow so differently. Take care.

My daughter didn't get her first tooth until 14 months. She was able to eat lots of food, just by gumming it. Anyway, i took her to the dentist and they said it was normal and she was okay. I think they took an x-ray. Her teeth then grew in and she got them all by two. I don't think it's so unusual. The dentist also said she would lose her baby teeth later than most kids too, it's all relative.

My little one didnt get teeth until after her first bday. Then, they all came in weird order. Her first tooth was her canine. Don't worry, the teeth will come in eventually. The only problem is that I think her teething process was harder since she was older. We had a lot of sleepless nights and went through many bottles of tylenol.

Don't worry, it's normal. My daughter just got her first tooth at 10 months. I asked the doctor about it last month at her wellness checkup and he said it was completely normal for some children not to get their first tooth until up to 18 months old.

My oldest son got his first tooth just three days before his first birthday. Teeth are a very individual thing. It is not uncommon for a child not to have any teeth come in yet by the time they are one.

My daughter did not get her first tooth until she was 15 months. Give them a chance, they will make their appearance.

My peditrician said that she becomes concerned if there are no teeth at the 15m appt. My daughter is 11m and her first tooth is just sprouting. My one friend's peditrician said that late teethers are healthy babies. Not sure how true that is, you can take that last sentence for what it is worth. So I wouldn't worry. My sister in law said she didn't get any teeth until 2yrs of age.

My son got his first two teeth at 4 months and my daughter, at 11 months. As long as the Dr. thinks it's normal, I wouldn't worry. You usually can feel the gums - you might even feel some points beneath the surface. When she starts drooling on everything or biting everything, those teeth will emerge quickly. Good luck!

Hi M.,

Yes, this is normal. My son didn't get his first tooth until he was one and a half years old. If they turn 2 and still don't have any teeth then you might want to ask about it. For now, it is normal. You don't have to worry about tooth decay yet, that's a good thing.
Good luck,

I'm no expert but think that it's within the normal range. I know that my older sister who is now 41 didn't have teeth at one year. For what it's worth, I've been told that the later the better as far as the teeth go - they just get exposed to sugars as decaying agents as soon as they are out. Also, my sister had no cavities until adulthood. My other sister and I were not so lucky!

She'll get teeth before you know it. They could always do an x-ray if there is concern that she's missing teeth.

With the responses you have gotten, you know that this is normal. My son was about 10 months when he got his first tooth and was behind the expected time frames w/ every one of his teeth. He even has an extra tooth in his mouth!
Also to let you know, your grand-dtr will probably loose her teeth later as well. My son is 6 and he has not lost a tooth yet and there is no sign of it happening any time soon. So, do not be alarmed if she is behind most kids when it comes to loosing those pearly whites.

I have three kid and none of them had teeth before they were one. My oldest got teeth around 14months and the other two a little before that. I makes it a pain to feed them lots of yogurt, cottage cheese and baby food. But other than that it is a good thing since there is less time for tooth decay and they lose ther baby teeth later in life. My oldest still has alot of her baby teeth.

My son didn't get teeth till 13 months. Some kids take longer than others. Every kid is different. My son is now 22 months and has 9 teeth, and most kids I've seen have a full mouth by 22 months, but the docs are not worried so neither am I. She'll get them in when they are ready to come.

My son took a long time teething - he did not get his first 2 teeth until just before his 1st birthday. I'd still ask doc, of course, but she may just be slow in getting them.

My son did not have a tooth in his mouth till he was over a year old. Both the Doctor and the Dentist said that is good when children do not get teeth till after age one. You don't have to worry about some of the problem associated with babies and bottles (bottle mouth) or if a child uses a pacifier, which can cause the teeth to shift.

IT IS A GOOD THING ! ! ! Ask you dentist ^j^

I have a son who is 2 and had most of his teeth by the time he was one, but my girlfriends daughter didn't start getting any teeth until she was 15 months old. She was worried but when she took her to the doctor, she was told all kids have different schedules and not to worry everything was fine with her daughter. So I am sure that is exactly what will be said about your granddaughter so don't worry.

i'm not sure if it's normal, but it's not unusual. we're in the same boat. my 11mo. has no teeth yet either. i've had people tell me that late teeth are healthier teeth.

and if you're concerned about starting solid foods, you'd be amazed how strong their little gums are. (as long as the food is semi-soft and in small bites.)

no worries.

My niece was a late teether, I think she got her first around 14 months and they came in very quickly at that point. Her doctor said it was still within normal. The doctor said that if she had not cut any teeth by 18 months she would refer them to a pediatric dentist for evaluation.

TOTALLY normal!! Babies get teeth at different times just like they do everything else totally diff. than another baby. My dd only had 2 bottom teeth when she turned one. More popped out very soon though. No need to worry!

Hi M. - this happens. I have a good friend whos son's first tooth didn't erupt until he was 14 months old. If his parents are really concerned, take him to see a pediatric dentist for x-rays. To find one in your area, check out the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry web site at www.aapd.org. Most of their members SHOULD see a 1 year old as it is in their guidlines. If you call one that doesn, move on to the next one on the list. Good luck - all should be fine. C.

Our 3 year old didn't get his first tooth until he was 14.5 months old, and he still didn't have all of his baby teeth at his 2nd birthday. In fact, he didn't start cutting the 2-year molars until he was well past 2.5 years old (and I'm not entirely sure he has them all now since he wouldn't open up for the dentist).
I didn't get teeth early either. Every child is different. It's completely normal... they'll be coming soon!

My daughter didn't have any teeth on her first birthday either. As a new Mom, I was quite concerned. The Pediatrician assured me that she would get them and actually spoofed with me that if she didn't get teeth, she would buy her first plates of dentures for me.

Today, she has beautiful teeth. There is a wives tale that says the longer they stay under the gum, the better they are when you are an adult. I guess it came true in this case.
