Teeth Digging While Breastfeeding

Is there any way to help my baby not to dig his teeth in me while breastfeeding? He's 8 months old. I've been dealing with him biting, which is getting better, and dealing with being very sore because he broke the skin with his teeth. I finally got Lanolin and I'm still dealing with the soreness but his teeth are making an indentation when he nurses right near the spot where he broke the skin. I'm wondering if I need to call the le leche league or something like that. I don't know what to do. I've never had this problem before and I usually nurse for 2 years. Now I'm wondering if I'll make it a year. Thanks so much for your help!

I was actually talking with a friend of mine about this a few weeks ago beause she had a similar problem with her son. Her dr. made this suggestion: Instead of draining one breast at a time, switch before your breast gets, umm soft & squishy! He told her that when her boob loses its fullness, it can cause them to start biting, or gripping firmer. So, she said she started switching earlier and it has helped tremendously!
Not sure if this helps or not, but just thought I'd share it with you!
Good luck!!

Maybe you should consider only pumping, so he can still get the good milk from you. :)

I would firmly say "No Biting, ouchie." Take him immediately off the breast and do not pick him up. Give some time even if he asks and keep saying, " No biting mommy, ouchie." My son went through this. I would watch him very closely because if he is fully latched on he can't bite you. Once he starts to slip off just a little it allows him to bite. Watch him and if he just barely starts to slip off, get your breast out of there quickly. He will learn if he wants to nurse then he won't bite you. Hang in there, it will get better. We got through little hurdles like this and he nursed until 20 months.

Dear mom, contact your La Leche League chapter. They hold monthly meetings all over town and the leaders are available by phone.

Le Leche League, WIC IBCLCs and www.kellymom.com are always great resources!

This usually takes only 2 days to adapt behavior.

1st bite, sternly say "No Biting!", place baby down and keep off breast for 5 minutes, even if baby wants to come back

2nd (same time frame) bite, sternly say "No Biting!", place baby down and keep off breast for 30 minutes, even if baby wants to come back

3rd bite within the same time frame, bite, sternly say "No Biting!", place baby down and keep off breast 3 hours, even if baby wants to come back.

Baby will learn very quickly!! You must be consistent, must also do it all with a stern face - no smiling, laughing, screaming or funny noises.

You could call La Leche and go to a meeting. You can also talk to a La Leche person on the phone but the meetings are cool. You get support to continue nursing and you will likely find solutions that really work. These folks are dedicated.

Anyway, you tell baby not to bite. Endure the pain as long as you can until it is too much. If I had a wound, I would typically have his switch over to the other side. Your baby should be on solids now, so you can supplement with regular food anyway. He could be teething. It gets easier. He's right at that age though. My first one bit me hard one time. I still remember it. My 2nd one didn't bite me as hard but it seems he bit more.

Your using that healing stuff, so keep that up. You can make it ! Call La Leche...they will help you :-)
