Did anyone have really early teethers??? My daughter is 9 weeks and I think that her teething may be starting. She is drooling like crazy and gets really irritable for no reason from time to time. She chews on her fist and her nipple when I feed her and her temperature has been going up a little bit off and on. (Not higher than like 99.9) I'm not sure if its possible for her to get teeth this young or not but I was thinking that even if they aren't going to come in for a while maybe they are starting to shift and move into place in her gums and are causing discomfort. Anyopmne have any experience with this???

What can I do next?

My daughter actually got her first tooth at 4 months and started drooling with a 99 degree temp at three months. Suprised me! She did not actually ever take a pacifier until just before her tooth came in and has been addicted ever since! They can get teeth early! P.S. Love the name.

It's pretty uncommmon for such a young infant to get teeth, I don't think it's unheard of though - some babies are born with teeth! Here's a link to webmd's teething overview http://www.webmd.com/oral-health/teething-overview.
Fever is not a symptom of teething, she's just probably fighting off a little infection at the same time. While that doesn't mean you need to rush her to doc because of the fever - most current information says that teething does not cause fevers so keep on eye on that and don't just chalk it up to teething like someone else said - ear infections have similar symptoms.
I hope this helps!

L., our son was around 3 or 3 1/2 months when we noticed similar symptoms in him. He'd drool excessively and want to chew on anything in sight. I don't remember him having a slight fever, but he may have. Anyway, he continued to do this for awhile. At his four month doctor's visit, his pediatrician said that it could be teething, but that the symptoms can show up and occur for a LONG time before the teeth actually erupt. Well, our son surprised us by cutting his first tooth around 5 months (the average, according to a baby book I own, is 7 months). He wasn't really cranky with his teething until the night before the tooth broke through the gums. He screamed for awhile, and we ended up giving him Infant Tylenol because of his discomfort. The next day, we could feel the sharp little edge of his tooth. Then, he surprised us again by cutting another tooth just 10 days later. Now, at almost 8 months, he has two more teeth coming in (one came through just a couple days after the first; talk about crankiness, then!). So, it could be a possibility that your daughter's teeth are coming in, though she may actually show the symptoms of teething a long time before her teeth start to erupt. My book said it can be hereditary. If one or both parents got their teeth early, then the same could be true for their child. I hope that helps! Oh, and cold teething rings help, but Infant Tylenol really works if your baby just seems too uncomfortable. Good luck!

My daughter started drooling early too but didn't get her first tooth till she was 6 months. I have heard of some kids getting them as early as 3months. I'm sure you probly could get them earlier than that but I don't know of any babies who have.

Teething seems like such a big deal for such a small person!! My son is almost 8 months and has 2 on the bottom in and 2 on the top just came in 2 wks ago. He never took a binki or any toys to suck on, just my finger for the first couple months. I am nursing and I think that contributed. Now, though, he is a thumb-sucker! lol. Just started about 2 months ago. He got his first 2 at 3.5 months and the top 2 came in at about 6 months. It is crazy and so hard to determine what is going on!! I just let nature take its course and make sure I put it in the babybook! I am actually wondering when I should start taking him to the dentist..?
Good Luck!

a lot of babies that age drool and chew on hands. it doesn't necessarily mean she's teething. and also babies temperatures are naturally higher than ours. lots of babies her age get fussy too. don't jump the gun on any treatments. but who knows, i might be wrong.

I just took my 4 month old for her check up & wondered the same thing. My ped. said that typically they come in at around 6 months, but she's seen them as early as 3 months. When my son was teething, the only thing he did was spike a fever. Then shortly after he had teeth. They can come in fast. I dropped him off at daycare & when I picked him up, they were there. I didn't even know they were coming.

That sounds like teething, all right.

As for how early is too early for teeth- there actually are babies born with FULL sets of teeth already in place. Generally the teeth will come in and receed a couple of times before popping out permanently. So teething can take from 1 day to several months. Most the time (but not always) teeth tend to come in matched sets- the top two at the same time, or a top and bottom one...

You might notice other side effects of teething- diarrhea, irritability, etc... the only one to worry about is if they start rubbing/pulling on their ears- it could be an ear infection instead.

You can use several teething methods for relief- orajel, teething rings (try to avoid the gel filled ones), frozen damp washcloths... or what I did (as suggested by a 90 year old lady with 17 children): rub a lemon wedge over the babys gums. I don't know why- it worked well and got rid of their colic at the same time.

L.,
Teeth can take quite awhile to erupt through a baby's gums, sometimes more than a month. Once the teeth have broken through the gum, there shouldn't be any more discomfort (from that particular tooth.) My brother got his first tooth when he was three months old and was showing some of the same signs as your daughter for several weeks before.

My daughter, 11 months, has 6 teeth, all of which came in 2 at a time(2 teeth on the same day.) She has started her crabiness and chewing again recently so I'm anticipating another tooth soon. I highly recommend giving teething babies a cool, wet wash cloth to suck on during these rough times. My daughter does very well with this and she loves it. I try to avoid the medicated pain relievers as much as possible, and don't really do the Orajel because 1) She doesn't like it and 2) I've heard it toughens their gums and makes it harder for the teeth to come through.

Anyway, it certainly sounds like she's teething to me! Good luck!

L.,
My son, who is now 7 months old with four teeth, had the same symptoms as your daughter did early on. I talked to others about it and I think when their teeth are 'setting in' is more painful than the teeth actually coming through. When my son (Ethan)'s teeth finally came through, he didnt chew on his hand as much...he used toys instead but didnt do it as badly, so with being irritable and such...so my thought is that they might be setting in...we used Baby Orajel and put that on his gums or sometimes a dose of Infant Tylenol to help ease the pain it seemed like he was in...hope it helps!

Yes, one of my daughters got her first teeh a four months old. We were shocked! Here teeth came in regularly and they are fine. Nothing unusual about early teething.
