My son is 5 mo and has started teething. I am worried because he has started gumming on my nipples. What am I going to do when he has his bottom teeth and starts to get the top ones. My Little brother bit half way through my mom's nipple. That freaked me out(I almost didn't breastfeed because of it).I want to keep breastfeeding but I don't know how to keep him from bitting me. He does it all the time. HELP!

What can I do next?

I think he is biting because he has had enough milk or he might get a kick out of seeing your reaction.

Hi, J.

With all of my children, I pumped my breastmilk for a variety of reason. My oldest was born a month premature, my middle daughter thought she was a vaccuum and my youngest did latch on, but I was afraid she wasn't getting enough so I pumped. I am a visual person and since I couldn't see I worried. :)

Your son is still getting your milk and he isn't biting you...plus your husband or someone else can feed him while you go relax or take a shower. :) It is a win-win situation for everyone. :)

Good Luck and I hope this helps.

Bless you and yours, G.

Your son should beware now that nursing is eating by this age. Whenever he bites Tell him no if he continues then take him off. Do this until he doesn't bite you. I nurse all three children of mine and only one bite me. The youngest was nursed until she was 14 months we had battles. Another idea stop nursing and start pumpimg. Give him other thing to bite and tell him this toy you can bite but you don't bite mommmy. Also babies this age get bored and start playing around they think it's playful because you may have laughed it off. Also give him more solid foods. Hope this helps and good luck.

He is probably biting you towards the end of his nursing when he is not really hungry and doesn't know that he is hurting you. When a baby is properly latched on to the breast it is impossible for them to bite because their tongue is covering there lower teeth. But when he is done nursing is when he probably slips his tongue back to try to relieve the pain in his gums. First, make sure he is latched on correctly when he is nursing and then towards the end when his is probably full pay attention and when he starts to slip his tongue back and try to bite take him off the breast. If he does bite, take him off and tell him no, he hurt mommy. Then try to give him a teething ring or something to chew on to relieve his gum discomfort. By keeping teething objects available, paying close attention that he is latched on correctly and towards the end of nursing when he most likely will bite and telling him no and taking him off the breast when he tells will probably stop the habit. Babies are very smart and will learn quickly that mom doesn't like it when I do that and them give him something to chew on that helps him without hurting you. Good Luck.

I am courius about this too... my suggestion would be to pump... that way the baby is still getting the benifits, and your nipples are safe. but I haven't had a chance to breastfeed yet. my son was born at 31 weeks, I pumped for a while, but got discouraged because he got reflux bad afterhaving a bottle that I had expressed after eating mexican food...opps...by the time he was home my milk had dried up. I hope to breast feed when I have this baby... might talk to a lactational consultant or your dr and see what they suggest
