Teething? - Scituate, MA

My 4 month old has been putting everything in his mouth but most recently he has been attacking his hands and mine when they go near his mouth. It is rather funny to watch because his eyes open wide and he kind of grunts as he goes after the hand. But on a serious note... not only does he "attack" the object/hand but he is really chomping down (he got my hand). Sometimes he cries like he is not getting the satisfaction he needs from whatever he has in his mouth. Could it be that he is teething already?

What can I do next?

Both my kids had teeth by the time they were 3 months old. (And when they get them this early, they lose them early too. My oldest, who had 3 teeth by the time she was 3 months old, had lost 8 teeth before she even started kindergarten - and was mad that she didn't have any teeth to lose and be on the "teeth chart" like all the other kids in her class)

hi M..
my name is L. i have a 7 month old and he was teething around the same age i asked my doctor about it and he told me they can start that young but it doesnt actually mean that a tooth will break they could do this for a couple months but i have heard of kids that get teeth as early as 5 months so i would just start buying teething rings until you find the one he likes the best . My son like to naw on his bottle nipple that seemed to sooth him.

Hello
I believe that ut could be from teething. I'm a daycare teacher at Bright Horizons and we have a baby boy who got two bottom teeth at four months old. Cool cloths and frozen teething rings are great for the baby. He also went after his own hands and our hands like he was ready to attack. Hes actually about 6 months now and hes crawling and pulling up on things too. He is early in doing everything.
So don't worry teething and the actions you are seeing are normal. Also teething can go on for a few months before you see a tooth. Be sure to have teething rings in the freeazer and in case teeth do break in have some baby ora jel handy.. :)

My son got his first 2 bottom baby teeth at 4mo old. Run your finger along his bottom gum, press firmly and see if you can feel the tooth starting to split through the gum. You could wet a wash cloth and freeze it a bit, and let him bite on that. Sometimes they do look like little animals trying to bite anything in site to satisfy their teething needs.... Best of luck and when his teeth come in done forget to care for them!!

He very well could be teething, my daughter got all her teeth by the time she was 4 months, and had her 2 year molars at 15 months. I found if you use a ice cub wrapped in a wash cloth they can chew on it and it does help with the pain because it is so cold, better than a teething ring that could pop. My daughter just turned 5 and has already lost her 2 bottom teeth and her two front teeth are on their way out! Her dentist said because she got them early they will fall out early.

Hi M.,

My now 9 month old daughter started signed of teething around 4 months old by drooling constantly, and either biting anyone's hand/fingers, or anything she could get her hands on to stuff in her mouth. She finally popped her bottom teeth first at 6 months, and just popped her upper teeth around 7 1/2 months. Each baby is different, but it seems that they all show the same signs when teeth are about to grow.

Good luck!

My son was born with a small tooth and starting really chomping as you describe about 3 to 5 mos. It is not a total phenomenon at all and many pediatricians have found this happening. Get him a cookie to teeth on or a teething ring. Good luck and don't worry about him, he will progress as his body lets him do.
Hope that will help you. You can also do a search under google about baby teeth or early teeth or something along those lines.

Oh, yeah, that's teething all right. You may not see the first tooth for awhile, but it is working its way up the gums. Wet washcloth, put in the freezer, could soothe him; of course, supervise so he doesn't choke.

Hey M.,
I have a little guy too, my first, and he started teething at 3 1/2 months!!!! He did not get his first tooth until almost 7 months!!! The things that worked best for him were of course, a teething ring, but I also put a face cloth in very cold water and let him bite down on it. He loved it!!!
Good luck!
L.
