Teething - Winchester, KY

My daughter has been having a hard time cutting her top teeth. We saw her middle 2 peek through about a month ago, but her gums swelled back up and now she's having to re-cut them. Has anyone else had to deal with this? No one in my family has had this problem and her fathers family wants nothing to do with her, any suggestions?

What can I do next?

Try a wet washcloth that is frozen and let her chew on it. The coldness should help the swelling. It helped my 2 sons when they were cutting their teeth. I also took a banana and cut it into slices, so they cant choke on it, and froze them. They also got a treat while teething on the banana.

I made teething cookies for my daughters. It's an Italian thing I guess. We have these cookies called "Ossi Dei Morti" or bones of the dead. They are wonderful! They are hard cookies like biscotti. There isn't much in them just flour, eggs, powdered sugar, and baking powder.

They give your baby something to chew on and at the same time they are helping to cut teeth. They are a bit messy and you may need to keep an eye on her because sometimes all the drool will soften the cookie. I haven't had any trouble so far but you can't be too careful! Below is a recipe (courtesy of allrecipes.com).

They take a bit of time but are so well worth it when your baby isn't in pain anymore! Try it...she'll love 'em. Also, you can dip 'em in your coffee. If you don't like this recipe there are tons of variations out there! I like to freeze mine. They last longer and are cold for the baby.

Good Luck!

Ossi Dei Morti

3 eggs
2 cups confectioners' sugar
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder

DIRECTIONS

In a medium bowl, whip the eggs and sugar with an electric mixer at high speed. Mix for 6 to 10 minutes, until mixture is thick and pale. Combine the flour and baking powder together. Gradually add the flour to the egg mixture. If the dough is still sticky, you can add more flour.

On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough into long log shapes, about 1 1/2 inches in diameter, and as long as your cookie sheet. Cover with a clean towel, and let them sit out overnight.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Remove the rolls of dough from the cookie sheets and place them on a lightly floured surface. Cut accross into 1 1/2 inch long pieces. And return them to the baking sheets.

Bake for 15 to 20 minutes in the preheated oven, until they are a light brown. Remove from baking sheets to cool on wire racks. These cookies can be stored for a month in an airtight container.

this can be one of the toughest times for an infant. i suggest you give her oragel and tylenol if the pain becomes unbearable. with my kids I also found it helpful to take a wet washcloth preferably cold and let her chew on it or rub it across her gums. Also putting teething rings in the freezer hepls and also freezing bananas and letting her chew on them.

make sure you DO NOT use oragel or amvbosol... the reason it makes the gums feel better is b/c it numbs them... well that also numbs the neverves that help the tooth grow... so your slowing down her tooth groth and prolonging the pain... use popsicles and teething tablet which you can get at any drug store... good luck!!

Yes! When teeth are coming in, you should view it as pulsing and working it's way up through the gum tissues, so it's not uncommon for the teeth to surface, then disappear before they finally surface for good.
If your daughter is more than 6 months old, I highly recommend using Motrin instead of Tylenol. It is a LOT more effective than Tylenol in easing teething pain!

I recently discovered "teething tablets" as well. They dissolve under the tongue and they soothe my daughter almost instantly. Giving tylenol can help, also soak a clean washcloth, ring it out and then freeze it, then once it's frozen it makes a great teether. I myself have never had a problem with using baby orajel either, I've used it on all three of my kids with no problems. Whatever helps to soothe them is worth a shot. Anything is better than what our parents did..."rub a little whiskey on their gums" sound familiar?

I think it took my son 2 months before those darn teeth finally showed up. The only thing I could do for him was to give him stuff to chew on, lots of different things to chew on including my fingers and also give him hurricane gel. You have to ask the pharmacists for the hurricane gel and you don't want to give them to much to often because it will make them sleepy. My pediatrician in GA said to put liquid Benedryl on the gums. Just stick your finger in the bottle and stick it on their gums. I did that during the ok times but when the fussing got bad I used the hurricane gel. I hope this helps, good luck!!

My daughter just cut her top two teeth as well and it seemed to do the same thing but now they are out and her gums are back to normal. You can always use the baby gum pain reliever that you apply directly to the gums. That really helped with my older kids.

Yes, we went through the same thing (and still are) w/my 1 yr old. I did much of the same things the other moms have suggested, esp giving Tylenol. And I would give Noah regular doses of it rather than wait for him to feel miserable. It really seemed to help. Oragel did NOT, unless he was screaming and it was a way to get him calmed. It mainly made him angry and confused.

A friend of ours bought herbal teething pills at Walgreens. They sell them in the baby section and had been recommended to her by another friend.

As soon as the teeth pop through, your baby will go back to normal.
