I have a 9 month old son who has 4 teeth and 4 more coming in all at once. He is in considerable pain and I am looking for ways to help him. I give him tylenol. I do the orajel. We gnaw on frozen bagels and teethers. Is there anything else that I can do to help with the pain. I also use a cool washcloth and rub his gums. He is normally a very happy baby. Very rarely cries. The last 2 days he spends most of the day crying. At night its the worst. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you everyone for your suggestions. Going to the store today and picking up the Hyland's and baby motrin. Also froze a banana last night and he really enjoyed gnawing on it this morning.Happy Thanksgiving to everyone.

At Wal-mart and Target they have these "food-nets" I can;t remember exactly what they are called, it's been so long! but they have round handles and attatched to nylon nets. We put frozen bananas in them and let him go to town. they are very safe- made for this and trying new foods. He loves the flavor and they are nutritious. Good luck!

Thats really all you can do. My son is 6 months old and just cut the top 4 and is cutting the bottom 2...he already has 2 on the bottom, so eight teeth in all. I actually took him to the doc because he is just not himself, and they said it was teething. You might try baby motrin...I have noticed that helps a bit more than the tylenol, you just have to be careful not to give too much. We also gave him 1/2 a dose of baby benedryl at night two nights ago, NOT TO MAKE HIM SLEEP, but to dry up all the extra mucus because he was choking on it at night. It worked wonders. He didnt sleep anymore, but he was much happier and didnt spit up at all. Just a thought.

It makes ME want to cry by just thinking about it! An ice cube wrapped in a soft cloth he can chew on could help. I think Humphreys has those teething pills than seem to be very effective. Good luck.

You are doing everything you should, you just have to realize that there will be growing pains and helping him to keep his mind off it helps to. But I would suggest that you cut back on the Tylenol and Orajel because you could be doing more harm than good to other organs in his little body. Try going to the health food store (Wholefoods) and see what they have that is more of a natural anestetic, with less chemicals and medication. I also invite you to join Holistic Moms Network www.holisticmoms.net where you can learn a lot more and have the support of knowledgable moms and practitioners on alternative, natural and healthy ways to take care of our children.
Good luck he'll be feeling good soon.....

Hi, ask your pediatrician about teething tablets. They disolve in water in their bottle. You do not need a prescription but I think the pharmacist keeps them behind the counter. I used these for my son because he was cutting alot of teeth at once and they seemed to help alot. Have a great Thanksgiving!! S.

I'm so sorry your little guy is so uncomfortable. The same thing happened to my son (who is now 13 months old). He was miserable when he had 4 teeth coming in at once. All the things you're doing are good. You could maybe try some children's Motrin. That seemed to help more than Tylenol when my son was in pain. Good luck. This will pass soon and your son will be his happy self again!

Oddly enough, my son liked to gnaw on my finger, (wrapped in a cool, clean washrag),that seemed be the best solution for him. I think it was the combination of rubbing on something firm and soft at the same time that really helped. He also loved the frozen fruit that I put in one of the teething pops bags.

I recommend 'Hylands Teething Tablets'. I used them for my last 2nd and 3rd children and plan to do so again with my 4th. They are all natural tablets that help soothe teething children. I have always found them at Walmart next to the childrens vitamins. I recommend giving them to your child on a scheduled basis as this was the only way I have found they worked with my kids. HTH

Hi Cind:
Try Humphrey's Three pallets, the have them at any natural/homeopathic pharmacy, I gave them to my 3 kids (now 4-1/2 and 3) they think is candy and really like them, as they disolve in their mouth. It helps with the fuzziness and sleeplesness. You might also find other brands or drops that you can give him for night time, all natural. As long as they can bite on something soft, it will help. Does he use a pacifier?
Good luck, I hope this helps.

Buy one of those mesh things you can purchase in almost any baby section, it allows your child to suck on things with out getting any big pieces that could possible make them choke. Then cut a bannana in a size that would fit inside of the mesh thingy. Freeze the bananna then allow him to enjoy it. It was the only thing that helped my son!

I haven't found a cure-all yet, but did want to let you know that if you are considering using teething tablets, try them during your child's 'awake' time of day first. We made the mistake of giving our one-year old baby tablets at bedtime and she reacted to them by gaining energy and running around the house for about 90 minutes. She felt better... but not the desired bedtime effect! The bottle and all internet research I could find states that the TT could cause drowsiness. Not for us!

I have never used Orajel because they say if the baby swallows too much it can numb his throat, causing him problems swallowing and chocking. I use Hyland's Teething tablets (Target at the pharmacy counter, Publix, Walmart, or health food stores). What I did was gave my son motrin about 1/2 hour before I put him down for bed, so he was comfortable and then gave him the tablets right before I put him down. That seemed to work for him. The tablets dissolve so I use to stick my finger in his mouth and put the tablet under his tongue and rubbed it over the gums.

I find that Baby Motrin works better than Tylenol does, so you could try that. There's also something called "Hyland's Teething Tablets" which is a natural teething medicine--Publix sells it in the baby aisle. It sounds like you're doing everything you possibly can, though. Teething stinks, but you'll get thru it (both of you!). GL.

Isn't it pure h*ll?? we've surely had a time with teething at our house. As soon as her 1st teeth FINALLY came through, I think we're working on the 1 yr molers. ANYWAY, teething tablets are a great fix, also I alternate infant tylenol and infant motrin every 4 hours during the really difficult times. I've found that my daughter sometimes responds better to the motrin. My daughter absolutely hates the orajel, so I tried the kid with the "nightime, pain releaver" in it and that worked better~
OH! forgot about celery. cold celery works wonders, you just have to hold it and throw it away when it gets stringy. be careful, cause they can choke on it if swallowed

Hi C.,
When my son was teething a friend of mine told me about teething tablets. They are tiny homeopathic tablets and they are totally safe for infants. You can get them at Wal-Mart for about $4 or $5 a bottle and they work wonders, at least for my son they did. For an adult you are supposed to put the tablets under your tongue and let them dissolve, but I would just take a little bit of water and put the recommeded tablets in it and stirred it around until they disolved and gave it to my son. A friend of mine had a toothache and I gave her a few of them and she said that she noticed a difference right away. Hope this helps!!

I totally understand what you are going through--my son started cutting teeth around 6 months and had finished cutting all but his two year old molars by 14 months!
Here's what I found: Orajel doesn't do squat--it only lasts for a short time and they eat more than it works--it also doesn't help with that achy tooth pain.
Hylands teething tablets-we tried them, I'm not sure if they helped but they seemed to help with sleeping when used with Motrin.
Baby Motrin is really the best because it works better and lasts longer than Tylenol (6-8 hours vs 4 hours for Tylenol). I highly recommend it--I would time it so he would get a dose before bedtime and if teething was bad, he would inevitably wake up 6 hours later (which is when I would go in there and give him another dose).
Also don't let anyone scare you into thinking that giving him OTC pain medication made for babies will hurt him--the dosages are there for a reason as well as the amount allowed within a 24 hour period. Call your pediatrician to verify this along with the dosages you should give your son.

The best thing I have found is called " Hylands Teething Tablets". They dissolve very quickly and are small so no choking hazard. And they are completely medicine free. You may notice your baby fall asleep and think its from the medicine, but its just because they have gotten relief and can sleep now. Walgreens and Publix is where I have found them. Hope they work for you as well as they have worked for me.

Try Humphreys teething pellets. You can find them at Walgreens in the baby section. They are homeopathic teething medicine and work wonders! I've used them on all three of my boys, my youngest being a year old. You give him three little pellets in his mouth every two hours until the pain subsides. They taste sweet so he'll like them, they also dissolve in the mouth on contact. They will also help him to sleep better. They cost about $5.00 and I always keep 4 or 5 bottles in stock in my house as I keep one in the diaper bag at all times.
Trust me it works, let me know. Good luck!

The only thing I would add to this is Hylands Teething Tablets. They work wonders and are completely natural so considering how many are coming in at once I'd give him 3 at a time. They work WAY better than Orajel. I swear by these things. They look like little baby white pills but the disolve as soon as they hit the siliva on the tongue so they won't spit them out.
I was able to do this with my son and used some of the other methods you used but I didn't need to use the tylenol so you should be able to stop giving him that. The teething tablets work wonders so they don't need the tylenol.

One of my children were never fazed by teething. Then my second came along & was very fazed by it. I felt it was very weird in the beginning b/c I felt like I was drugging up my child, but I did the Tylenol, teething gel & the teething tablets. When I thought about doing them all at the same time I was not comfortable but it was when I had a couple Mom's tell me that they did this b/c it was the only thing that helped their child. I tried it & it was the ONLY thing that helped my son. I never had any reactions to the teething tablets. I gave them at any time he was upset.

Sounds like you are doing all you can. teething is the worst part of babbyhood, for me at least. I would give him some infant ibubrofren at night. It lasts longer than the tylenol. The teeething tablets are good too. Use then and the ibubrofren at night. Remember that this to shall pass.

I was always told orajel could be kind of dangerous because it can numb the back of their throat and they coudl possibly choke. I used teething tablets, you can get them at any dug or grocery store. They are all natural and don't numb, they just relieve the pain. You hold them on the gum for a couple seconds and they melt in to the gums. They are in a little blue bottle with pink writing. Good luck!
