Teething Causing More Spit Up

My 8 month old son is teething again- getting all 4 of his front top teeth at once! - already has his 2 bottom ones. But he has recently started spitting up more than usual - he has been a "happy spitter" since birth (he is growing fine - 20lbs already so no concern there). Does anyone else have experience with their babies spitting up more than usual when teething?

What can I do next?

Hi A. -

I am a mother of two children, the second of which has had significant reflux. I had not thought about it until I saw your posting, but my daughter has increased her reflux during the times of teething.

Physiological this does make sense. While the baby is teething, more saliva is produced (obvious by the drooling) and that in turns produces more acid.

I would say this is just one of those things we can chaulk up to the phrase "this too shall pass." One I use frequently in parenting.

However, if your child continues with increased 'spitting' after the teeth have broke through the gum line, you probably want to check with your Doctor.

Hope this helps.
S.

Yeah my son spit up alot too. I would not be concerned about it. If he contiues to spit up for long periods of time then I would take him to the doctors for a check up. I would watch and see how he does first before you call. Has he had any fevers? Sometimes when your child is teething you have to watch for fevers? If your child is not feeling well it will cause him to spit up.

my daughter is 4 mo. old and teething, her bottom 2 are coming in..she's been spitting up so much, you'd think she was vomiting...i just took her to the doc wed to get her shots & check up, i asked her doc about it & she said it was normal, that babies drool much more when they are teething and other than the pretty new outfit, her tummy gets quite a bit of drool too & after feedings thier little bellies can only hold so much, & there's only 1 way out. i change her clothes a minimum of 6 x's a day..she's said it's pretty much just a grin & bear it deal.

Oh honey, I feel for you! Our son was a happy spitter too!

He is probably spitting up more because, with teething, he is likely producing more drool and saliva. The excess saliva can set off his sensitive gag reflex, resulting in more spit up. With 4 teeth coming in at one time, he may have a whole lot of excess saliva. Not a whole lot you can do except ride this one out. But hey, at least he's getting the teeth in all at one time, so only one bout of teething instead of four bouts of teething!

Not sure if you will find this helpful but, the happy spitting will and does go away. With 4 upper teeth and 2 lower teeth you could probably start (if you haven't already) more soft finger foods. Try any of the fruit cups (no high fructose corn syrup added) or microwave some frozen vegetables so they're nice and soft. We found that once our baby got on more 'solid' foods, the spitting up stopped entirely. Of course, avoid foods that could trigger allergies but with teeth your child might be ready!
