Teething Question - Oakland, CA

My 10 month old has been hitting himself on the side if his head for the past week. Could this be a sign of teething? He usually touches his ears. He still has his finger in his mouth non-stop. He just got the top 4 teeth all at once and now I think two more are joining the bottom two. Anyone had this happen with their baby?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the responses. I did have his ears checked, and they are fine...no ear infection whatsoever. It must be teething, or just a new sensation that he has discovered.

At 9 mos. my son has no teeth and has been hitting his head and side and pulling on his ears for a few months. I saw another post about 2 mos. ago about this. The responses indicated it is just a comfort thing. Although, he certainly hits himself hard!

Interesting responses. I would definitely rule out an ear infection. My son barely tugged at his ears during nursing and I mistook it for just discovering his ears...but nope he has an infection. (He is also 10 mo - my mom said this is usually the age the infections start).
I found that motrin works well now, it didn't earlier. Make sure the dosage is right for his weight. My boy is big and I wasn't giving him enough.

It could be teething but it could also be an ear infection.
Is he drooling more? Does he act as if his gums hurt? These are signs of teething. It might be worth the call to the pediatrition to rule out an ear infection.

You might want to have his ears checked my daughter now 23, had narrow ear cannals and as a result had several ear infections. They didn't always make her cry sometimes she would play with the sensation of the fluid in her ears and that sounds like what he might be doing. The sucking is a sign that he may be trying to releave the pressure.

Yes. My daughter hit herself on the side of the head and pulled her ears for several weeks before getting her first teeth (at 9 months). I took her to the pediatrician twice to check for ear infections, but she was fine. After getting teeth she stopped.

my 10-month old daughter has been doing the same thing, mostly when she's about to fall asleep for a nap, but plays with her ears at other times of the day. I know she is teething, one on the top is about to break through.
I was wondering the same, though, and i'm glad to read your responses here so far. :)

Sounds like he might have an ear infection or issue. Call his doctor.

i might take him to the pediatrician just to rule out ear infection. good luck! teething is rough and sometimes seems unpredictable.

Yes, this is most probably a sign of teething. Remember, the teeth have to cut through the upper part of the gums before they can break through the skin of the gums.
