I had a frozen teether that worked for 1 child, a chicken leg that worked for another, piece of cinnamon stick for another child and a piece of ginger candy for another child. I have 4 children and 2 were born with teeth.
I wonder if anyone has any pearls of wisdom for me? Our newest is 4 months old now. His first tooth started appearing about 3 weeks ago, and as of now, the bottom two have both broken through already. He has been having a terrible time with teething pain, from what I can tell. He sticks both hands in his mouth & just cries and cries. When we took him in for his 4 mo. checkup last week, the doctor confirmed that there didn't seem to be anything else wrong with him, just teething.
I have tried Baby Orajel, Hyland's Teething Tablets, every shape & size teething toy, wet washcloth, wet & frozen washcloth, etc. Nothing really seems to help him. He does not even take his pacifier at all now, the past week or two.
I'm just feeling at a loss here. I guess we were lucky, as with our first two kids, I never really noticed at all when either one of them was getting teeth.
He did seem a little better the earlier part of this week, but now this afternoon it's the wailing & double hands in mouth again.
So - Any extra advice for us!?
Thanks!

This could be just an old Mexican wives tale but the same day at two seperate birthday parties two different aunts shared this with me for my 6 month old. Treat teething with green onions - When he is teething give him green onions to chew on. Give just the dark green end. It has an ingredient that naturally numbs the gums. I havent tried it yet because she hasn't started complaining about her teeth yet. Good luck.
WIth our son, we took him to a homeopath and he prescribed Calcarea Carbonica. Now, with homeopathy, the remedy is specific to the child and won't work for everybody, but it can't hurt and it might help. Homeopathy has no side effects, and if the remedy is right it will work, but if it's wrong, it won't. We gave the pellets whenever he was crying because of his teeth, and he calmed down and slept right away.
Hi girlfriend.Try freezing nursery water into ice cubes and wrapping them into a white face towel for the baby to chew on. It worked for my grand-daughters. Yes its messy but they were relieved. I hope it works for ya.
J.,
I don't know if this helps or not or if it is the right stage - I am past this and can't remember all the pearls of wisdom, but what about the mini bagels, but frozen. I believe he is ok to eat this, but can't remember... I know they are small, but not sure if small enough for their little hands?
Hope this is helpful. also, there are some fruit holders that are mesh and you just stick the fruit in - you could try that so that he doesn't get anything that may choke him.
Good luck!

My son wasn't bad with teeth and a little ibuprofen and Tylenol worked you can switch off every 3 hours until he feels better. My daughter currently 1year seemed as though she was getting teeth the whole time since she was 3 months and the otc stuff didn't help. So I froze the yogurt tubes, and she would just eat those and be good for a while and be able to enjoy her playtime and sleep:) I use the Horizon brand or Stoneyfield. She also lived on frozen peas and blueberries for a few months plus I let he bite on bagels and all she wanted sometimes was milk(formula). I never tried the teething tablets but the gentle ? with whinnie the pooh on the box teething drops, has the homeopathic pain relief plus chamomile. They work great for her. i hope this helps.
I have a teething 5 month old and recently heard about amber teething necklaces. I just ordered one. This is my 3rd baby and my 2nd child had a really hard time with teething. I am willing to try anything to not go through that again.
Look online for amber teething necklaces to read how they work, I know a mom who swears by them and has never been woken up by a teething child.
Good luck!
My son has a teether that vibrates not sure if that was something that you tried.
We froze binkie's.
Somone once suggested to put a touch of sugar on the binki. Not sure what that does if anything.
Good luck.
I saw this post a while back and wanted to copy and paste it for you and all the moms out there with teething kids. (By the way, the gentle finger tooth brush massaging idea will probably work the best, I'd try the personalized homeopathics, too!)
From another mom:
"I've read from a few to try Hyland's teething tablets. I want to warn you (and all the other moms reading this thread) against these. I have read from moms in other communities that they are trying to get these pulled off of the shelves in stores because of adverse reactions to these natural tablets (i.e. seizures, symptoms requiring hospitalization, etc.). Once I read about this, I tossed my Hyland's away and forwarded the information on to all of my mom friends, I encourage you all to do the same! As to Tylenol, many times it won't work for teething pain but Ibuprofen (brand names Motrin and Advil) will. I don't know if that is because it has an anti-inflammatory agent in it, or what. Another plus, Ibuprofen lasts longer (6-8 hours vs. 3-4 hours) than Tylenol; it just takes a little longer to kick in (about a half hour)."
One other tip. Not to sound heartless, but get yourself some ear plugs if the screams stress you out. I had to do that. It's so much easier to hold your screaming kid on your shoulder if you have ear plugs in! When you are stressed they pick it up and scream more. Hope your little ones gets relief soon (and YOU too!)
Hi J.! My name is V., I am a mother of 2 boys, 7yr old & 17month old. We used a soft finger toothbrush and massaged his gums, it helped calm him down for a while. We also tried a chunk of ice/water popsicle. He also liked chewing on our finger when it was wrapped in a cold washcloth. I hope your baby feels better soon!
I am trying to figure how Tylenol and Advil are better options when they are warning adults acetaminophen causes more liver damage than any other drug on the market...according to the FDA..(here is the link to that story: http://www.medpagetoday.com/ProductAlert/OTC/14907) can't be good for infants whose liver is still so new.
yet two years ago when my daughter was born, they were pulling Orajel from the market causing adverse seizure reactions in babies. They changed their formula..but still not my first option.
I would continue to do the wet and frozen washcloths. I saw on here (you can look in the archives) one mom used vanilla, but thinking b/c it is alcohol based, it numbed the baby...you can take that for what it is worth.
Google teething remedies for babies and you'll find some good (and interesting stuff).
Good Luck

This may seem obvious but have you tried pain relievers such as baby tylenol or advil? I know you don't want to overdue medications with infants but it sure helped my babies. I was careful to only give them the reccomended dosage as needed.
Best of Luck

talk to your doctor, but many children get relief from something like Motrin or Tylenol ( kid strength of course!)
the "old-fashion" idea of rubbing alcohol (whiskey etc) on the gums is NOT really effective and I would NOT recommend it.
I used to give my boys infant's tylenol and motrin(alternating between the two) when they had teething pain. The motrin seemed to work better because it is an anti-inflamatory and it lasted for 8 hours vs. 4 with the tylenol. I would only use it when it seemed to really be hurting them. My pediatrican also suggested giving them a dose of tylenol in the waiting room when they went in for their well visits for relief from the immunizations. The connection between tylenol and liver issues as one mom mentioned, has to do with adults who drink alcohol often and use tylenol for pain relief regularly. However, to be on the safe side, I think that is why it is recommended to alternate between tylenol and motrin even when they are running a fever during illness. I have two friends who are pharmacists, and they have also suggested this to me and that it is safe. Good Luck!
Well it look like you have tried almost everything. I use to use frozen lemon rinds. The juice in the lemon rind is a natural numbing agent. Freezing the rind help the child as well as the juice from the rind. Just watch him with the rind, make the strips big enough for him to hold and take it from him as he begins to bite it into pieces and give him another piece. I hope it helps.
