He could be teething, but isn't necessarily. At this age, they put everything in their mouths just to feel it. If he's not complaining about it, I wouldn't worry.
Walkers are not recommended at any age.

As a Physical Therapist I just wanted to reinforce what others have said, walkers are unsafe as many children have gone down stairs in them. But they also can impede developmental motor milestones. One of the mantras we learned in school is "stability before mobility" and studies have shown that children who use walkers tend to walk late. From a developmental standpoint, it is very important for your son to be working on building the muscles he needs to work towards rolling over both directions on purpose, sitting up independently when placed progressing toward getting into and out of sitting to build all his belly and back muscles up. Playing with him on the floor is a great way to work on those skills. Personally, I don't advocate use of an exersaucer until after they have started pulling up to stand on their own, building those stability muscles.
Dear K., I am a Dental Hygienist who worked 7 1/2 years pediatric dentistry, now I work general dentistry. Having your 5 month old putting his 2 fingers in his mouth may definetly mean he is teething, try to make sure you have the teeth rings for him try to keep them cold so it sooths his gingiva(gums(. Also try to massage his gingiva with the little finger brush after his feedings just wipe them, it sooths him it will also help you feel and notice when his 1st tooth gums in and help keep it clean. Hope I was able to help.

Babis around your son's age stick their fingers in their mouths constantly. I will agree please get a jumperoo. We are doing that today for my 7 month old because only 2 days his grandparents got him a walker. I know my playgroup they heard walkers are not good right now. We had a visit with the pediatrician today and walkers are okay for 15 minutes a day but bad because it won't let them exercise their muscles. We are taking that advice.
Instead of a walker, get a jumperoo and/or an exersaucer! Your son will build core and leg muscles, and have a ball!

My son LOVED these!
Babies that are teething have a tendency to druel alot and you can sometimes see white spots on the gums (the teeth beginning to come up). They're very irritable but whether he's teething or not they love to put EVERYTHING in their mouths...fingers etc.
Walkers are difficult to find becaususe they're considered unsafe. They now sell what looks like a walker (that doesn't move) but he may not be ready if he can't sit up without help.
