Terrible Spring Allergies in 2 Year Old

My son just turned 2 in March. When he was 9 mos old he was Dx with pollen allergies... and probably more. The Dr. said at the time that for the allergy to show via skin testing that young meant he was in for some serious allergy issues in the future (yippeee). The last three days he's been a constant (clear) mess of runny and bloody mucus. He wakes up so congested he is practically wheezing (this clears up in a few minutes of sitting upright). We took him to the Dr. (Ped) and she said to continue his Singular (4mg chewable) and add dose of Zyrtec.... We did and he's a litttle better.

I'm wondering if any of you have experienced such terrible allergies with such a young one, and what the Dr. recommended and/or any more natural remedies so we aren't giving so much medicine. Thank you!

You might want to try a homeopath, which works for approximately 8 out of 10 people. There are homeopaths who specialize in working with children.

I was amazed to find that there's a simple remedy with NO side effects that works within a few of minutes. If I hadn't experienced it myself, I never would have believed it could work.

Different remedies work better for different people, so the guidance of a homeopath is really useful.

Good luck. I've had allergies and asthma for my whole life. It's not easy, but it's doable!

My daughter doesn't have allergies, but my husband does. We've found a few things that work. Essential oils have worked wonders for him. He rubs lavender oil on his chest and face and neck and that will clear up his allergies. There are also a few oil blends that he uses that have been very beneficial (RC and Breathe Again from Young Living). When his allergies are bad we diffuse the oils at night so he is breathing them in. That helps, too. Another thing that works is a neti pot, but your son might be a bit young for that (you can buy those at Walgreens or Target, as well as health food stores). This season my husband is trying local honey. I have read if you eat a spoonful of local honey each day it will help you with allergies (I have also talked to a few people who have successfully used this). It has to be local honey because it's made from the local pollen.

Good luck! I know my husband is miserable when allergy season comes around.

My daughter also has terrible allergies that started before she was 1 year old. When I took her to the dr. they actually told me that she was too young to have an allergy. I did not believe them of course, when we would go outside, her nose and eyes would drip like a leaky faucet, and I knew she had an allergy to something.
Somebody told me that if you buy local honey ( I would say within 25-40 miles of your home) and give 1tsp-1tbsp a day it would help with the allergies. I tried it this last year and it made a world of difference for my daughter. I just put it on a spoon and she would put it in her mouth and let it dissolve.
Give it a try, it may take a bit, but now is the time to start.

Good luck, I know how sad it is to see your little on go through this.

Oh girl, I so hear you. My son is the same way and has been since before he turned 1. He's on Singular and Zyrtec daily and they are a god send! If we miss a day, he's coughing and snotty. These things are awesome! I don't know about natural remedies, but I don't dare take him off of these meds. And my thought is that it's just once a day and he's so much better when it's given to him. We knew that our children would have awful allergies because his father and I do...Bless their hearts!

I just wanted to let you know that we are doing the same thing that you are and it works awesome!

Unfortunately we have the same issue with our daughter - plus eczema on top of it. Doctors have not been very helpful, just saying "maybe she'll grow out of it" or conversely "it will likely get worse". We are trying Zyrtec, keep her indoors on windy days, and lots of showers to get things off her skin. Unfortunately she is still miserable. We find if she is busy doing something fun, the allergies bother her less and her symptoms seem less severe. Good luck, and I feel your pain.

Two of my three kids have pretty severe allergies. My middle boy actually has had to stay in the hospital overnight a few times with severe breathing problems. It is the worst! Needless to say, I just will not medicate my kid every day. People have told me that it is cruel to let the kids suffer but I just cannot do it so I have gone the trial and error route and medicate when symptoms are severe.

Here is a list of what I do primarily for the middle boy, the older one has seemingly gotten better with his in just the last couple of years.

- I keep Zyrtec on hand for those times I know one of my sons will be exposed to exceptionally allergic environments or items, e.g. my oldest is terribly allergic to dogs or if we are going to be working on the yard and the pollen will be flying around.

- I keep Benedryl on hand for any emergency flare ups such as playing outside and coming in with a terrible rash or runny nose.

- I put on a vaporizer at night during the particularly high hay fever times

- I have a steriod for a nebulizer for my middle boy who gets so bad with allergies that he cannot breath (I only have to use this once and a while, maybe once or twice a month this time of year and maybe once during the winter months), he also has an inhaler for flare ups

- When either of them are having problems, I put them in a hot bath or run a hot shower and sit in the bathroom with them for 15 minutes just before I put them in bed

- Lastly, this sounds silly, but I make sure they wash their hands more often, seems when they have their fingers in all the things they are in, their eyes and nose seem to get worse.

That is all I have to offer, I am not sure how my sons compare to yours but we do have a lot of problems with breathing and snot. Good luck and I will be sure to read your responses so I can see if there are any other good ideas out there.

My almost 2 year old has allergies as well. I have also heard about the local non processed honey and would do that or the royal jelly in honey. you can get it at a health food store. We have doing a spoonful of that and has seemed to be helping tons! If you are Leary of the honey just do the royal jelly. Hope you get it figured out!

For the congestion, have you tried to elevate the bed, or put a humidifier in there? For the elevation, all you need is a 2x4 under two of the legs. I have also heard of using saline drops in his nose before bed, but don't have any experience with that.

Hi!
I work with a company that has a bunch of natrual products, from laundry detergent, to tooth paste, too makeup, and they even have some allergy medicines. A lot of the time, allergies and wheezing can be caused by the air quality in your home, or around your home. With spring coming around, there is spring cleaning and pollen and all kinds of other things to cause congestion and breathing trouble. I've been very, very happy with these products in my house, and I am always happy to refer anyone to them. Check out my website: www.livetotalwellness.com/Joycita and then if you're intrested, ask for more information directly from the site, or send me an email: ____@____.com I would be very happy to go into more detail about all these things! Good luck, and I hope your son feels better soon!

That is miserable! The only natural remedy that's ever worked for me - & it only helps a little- is nasal cleansing. Keeping as little pollen as possible from getting in there. Keep windows closed, dust & vacuum frequently... Hang in there :)

Hi DM,

Yes, my family has experienced these allergies. What I have learned over the past 10 years is that our body should NOT have a reaction to anything natural. If we do, our immune system is too compromised to fight off the normal things like grasses and flowers that were put here for us to enjoy.

There are several ways to build the immune system and I would recommend them all since his allergies are so bad. (I needed a hot compress every morning just to get my eyes open. They were actually glued shut with the drainage that appeared in the night...)

Detox the house. Getting the synthetic chemicals out of your home will allow his body to recoup. The chemicals break down the immune system so it won't work right.

Get the chemicals out of his diet. No processed foods. Synthetic chemicals in the body contraindicate and cause symptoms just like meds do. They even contraindicate with the laundry detergent that absorbs through the skin.

Principle chiropractic care, specifically upper cervical chiropractic, will help. If you don't know a good one, go to www.ucspine.com and find one in your area. When you interview them, make sure they understand the immune system. If they don't, then you're in the wrong place.

An absorbable multivitamin will help a lot. No Flintstones or Walmart brands. NO GNC. These are drug store quality and do more harm than good by creating free radicals.

My family has done all this and our allergies are gone and we don't even pick up a cold. We live with an inside dog and I can go on picnics now. I couldn't do that as a child...

Let me know if you want any more information. I'll be glad to help.

M.

PS Eczema is systemic and caused by the same things.
