Two of my three kids have pretty severe allergies. My middle boy actually has had to stay in the hospital overnight a few times with severe breathing problems. It is the worst! Needless to say, I just will not medicate my kid every day. People have told me that it is cruel to let the kids suffer but I just cannot do it so I have gone the trial and error route and medicate when symptoms are severe.
Here is a list of what I do primarily for the middle boy, the older one has seemingly gotten better with his in just the last couple of years.
- I keep Zyrtec on hand for those times I know one of my sons will be exposed to exceptionally allergic environments or items, e.g. my oldest is terribly allergic to dogs or if we are going to be working on the yard and the pollen will be flying around.
- I keep Benedryl on hand for any emergency flare ups such as playing outside and coming in with a terrible rash or runny nose.
- I put on a vaporizer at night during the particularly high hay fever times
- I have a steriod for a nebulizer for my middle boy who gets so bad with allergies that he cannot breath (I only have to use this once and a while, maybe once or twice a month this time of year and maybe once during the winter months), he also has an inhaler for flare ups
- When either of them are having problems, I put them in a hot bath or run a hot shower and sit in the bathroom with them for 15 minutes just before I put them in bed
- Lastly, this sounds silly, but I make sure they wash their hands more often, seems when they have their fingers in all the things they are in, their eyes and nose seem to get worse.
That is all I have to offer, I am not sure how my sons compare to yours but we do have a lot of problems with breathing and snot. Good luck and I will be sure to read your responses so I can see if there are any other good ideas out there.
