Texas Culture - Possibly Moving from the Midwest

Overall, I think Texans are very welcoming and kind. They are helpful and good people. We love living here.

My family spent 8 years in a northern suburb of Dallas called Corinth. We moved to the Orlando area just over a year ago and second guess our decision almost every day because we miss Texas so much. I find that the "culture" there is unique and one I miss greatly. Unlike another poster, I did find the area I lived in to be very conservative politically and religiously and I liked that. Most everyone seemed on the same page about wanting their kids to do well in school and be good citizens for the future. That is very sadly lacking here in Central Florida. I like that Texans generally have the attitude of "this is how we do things, if you don't like it, move on down the road". As far as the materialistic aspect, sure, there are a lot of mini mansions and high society but you will find that the overall majority are pretty regular families with regular everyday lives. Again, I envy that you are probably headed to the place I consider "home"...and I don't even have any family there! If God ever opens that door just a crack for our family to get back to Texas, we will bust right through it and promise to never leave again. LOL You will see a lot of bumperstickers on cars around Texas that say this..."I wan't born in Texas but I got here as fast as I could" :-) That's how I feel about the Lone Star State

Edited to Add...I'm still thinking about your question an hour later LOL and wanted to come back and add another thing I love about Texas....they are VERY PROUD of their state and show it by proudly flying that beautiful Texas flag EVERYWHERE. I challenge you to find another state that shows their state spirit as much as Texas. I used to love to drive down I-35 through the town of Lewisville towards downtown Dallas and pass a Chevy dealership right against the interstate that had two of the biggest and most beautiful flags I ever saw in my life. One USA flag and one Texas flag. The DFW metroplex can have some pretty gusty days because it's in the plains so on those windy days watching those flags wave so proudly side by side, he heart would swell with love for America AND Texas! :-)

Understand, there are not many native Texans left in this area!! There is a huge population of people just like you. I have lived here for 27 years. It's not that conservative. It's really not. The conservatives are louder and you hear of them more. However, it is a melting pot. I know more people who are not conservative, then are. People come from all over the country here, for jobs. There are lots of big churches, yes. However, for every person attending a mega church, there are probably more then a handful who don't.

I would say, people are pretty into appearances...depending on where you live. I just read the other day, that more woman in Texas get breast implants then any other state. (I don't know if that's true, but I'd believe it!) Dallas has a Dr. who is considered one of the best botox doctors in the world. Celebrities fly here, for fillers! With that said, there are MORE casual people, then woman who are dressed to the nines. You will find pockets of woman like this, especially in Dallas. They are certainly not the majority. Woman like that, are in every single state!!

People are pretty friendly here. There isn't one "culture." Texas is one of the most racially diverse states in the nation. There are dozens of different cultures. Ft. Worth has incredible museums, Zoos, Botanical Gardens. It's a wonderful city.

I moved to TX from CA by way of AZ (9 years) and I've never felt more welcomed in a new place. We had invites to dinner, bbq, babysitters, etc etc all before we had even moved! Yes, it's conservative as a whole, but there are a lot of more liberal folks here too and we all manage to get along, lol.

Colleyville is gorgeous, but I wouldn't do a daily commute from there to Ft. Worth - it would be a nightmare, probably an hour each way. I live in Keller, which is just north of Ft. Worth. We're a typical suburb, lots of housing developments and strip malls, but an easy drive to Ft Worth, Southlake, Grapevine, and pretty much anything else on the west side of the metroplex. Weatherford is pretty rural, if you're a suburb girl you won't like it. Check out Keller, we have a lot of new housing developments and retail centers, you should be able to find something you like.

We've been in the DFW area since 1989. Love it!!! We live in Allen ( northern burb of Dallas. But Plano schools which are excellent!)

I think whomever us interviewing your hubby has stereotyped the women and I find it insulting.

Not all Texas women are plastic.

Will you find the big hair, naive, well dressed Texan woman trying to outshine everyone.......Oh yes

Most likely you'll find moms much like yourself, caring about their family, children's school, volunteering, etc.

I don't know details of Colleyville but I've never heard negative regarding
the schools.

I quite frankly find the description from a potential employer quite insulting. Yes, I'm in shape and work at it but I'd have the same personal ethic in TX or any other state to take care of myself.

I was born and raised in North Dakota and moved to San Antonio Texas for work when I was 28. We LOVE it here. The people are great, there is so much to do, and it has been a great place to call home. As far as the women dressing up alot, yes, some do, but that is not the norm, at least not here in San Antonio.
I'm not sure about the Dallas suburbs, as we rarely are in that area.

Texans are a bunch a crazies...JUST KIDDING! My husband is a native texan & I lived there for 8 years before I escaped lol.
Just like others have said, it's a big mix - people have been moving there from all across the nation so there is a wide variety.
Ft. Worth is a great place as far as museums and activities as well as all the little towns in between Ft. Worth & Dallas. Weatherford isn't as rural as it may seem (my husbands grandma lives there - we spent a lot of time with her). It has really "grown up" a lot in the past few years. Like another poster mentioned, Aledo is nice but in reality it is more rural than Weatherford.
As far as the commute goes, from Colleyville to Ft. Worth can be a nightmare if your husband has to take 121 or 183 - they are always backed up.

The Dallas /Ft. Worth area is very conservative. Home to some of the largest Southern Baptist Churches in Texas. Also Home to some of the most conservative Colleges and Universities. They have some of the best Hospitals and medical care in Texas.

The public schools are good in Ft. Worth.
And yes, people are very welcoming. You will need to get used to people asking lots of questions.. Not to be nosy but to get to know you real fast.

Kind of a "And who are your people?" kind of questions.

I like Ft. Worth. There is a Zoo, There are art Museums.. Gardens. the people are well educated.. You are close to Dallas so the shopping is amazing. The World Trade Center is there.. Speaking of.. that is one of the main entertainments... shopping. This is what people do to socialize..

Ft Worth and Dallas is pretty Modern. but there are pockets of very traditional homes. Lots of people moving there from out of state, but they are welcomed into the communities. You will be amazed at all of the Pick up trucks, Suburbans, Escalates and Lexus.. The Cowboy hats are big and White and it seems like everyone wears cowboy boots.

Remember it is hot one day and can snow the next. Texas weather is strange. You will need to make sure your home has an excellent Air Conditioner and good heater. You will be using them all of the time.

Think of it as an adventure. There is a lot to do there. You will like the people.

That is a hasty generalization that I find offensive. I live in an area that looks are not top priority. Sure we want to look good, many ladies get their nails & hair done regularly, but we don't mind running to Kroger w/ no make-up and sweats too. Ft. Worth is way more laid back than Dallas and has sooooooo much more culture. I think you would find it very inviting. However, there are good and bad pockets in Ft. Worth, make sure you do your research to get into a good neighborhood and school district.

i find that texas isn't that much different, honestly. i've lived all over...texas being the longest. (and colleyville is like 5 minutes from me, tool lol). You should see about Haltom City or Watauga...they are a bit closer...
anyhow, my husband is a native texan (as much as you can get...his great great grand-dad is the one thye named lewisville after :) ) and i've been here since 1993. it's just really hot, some people are stupid drivers, and 820 by rufe snow is on the top 10 list for being the worst highways (due to crowding) same as everywhere else lol

I am from MI and am planning to move to TX next year. I have visited TX (Plano) 4x in the last 3 years and the only thing I can complain about is the mosquitos. I honestly have never been to a state that has friendlier people. I am sure there is a pocket as in any other state but in general, the people did not strike me as pretentious at all.

It depends on the area and neighborhood you move to. The nicer / ritzier neighborhoods are all about appearances. Think 'Dallas' and J.R. Ewing.

The quieter mid-class neighborhoods are all about kids, and family and keeping the lawn green.

People in Texas are a lot of people everywhere --there are all kinds! The Ft. Worth Tarrant county area is a great place to be! And there are many people from all over the country that make their home here. Ft. Worth has a big arts and culture center if you are interested in that. There is a western culture here and many people grow to enjoy it--cowboys, cowgirls, cattle, rodeo... Ft Worth is the home of the Ft Worth Stock Show, a Texas favorite. I don't know about the appearance issue -- although Texas is home to many beautiful people, those comments are superficial. Instead of looking at Weatherford, what about Aledo?? there are some upscale communities there and a great school system and it is just a few miles from FW. (But it may be too rural for your liking.) Do some research !
