That Extra Baby Weight

Ok here it is: I gained 80lbs. with my daughter, and lost 60lbs. of it. I got pregnant with my son when my daughter was 5 months old. I gained 60lbs. with my son, and have lost 59lbs. So I have 21 lbs. to go to get back to my pre-pregnancy weight. Most of it came off pretty easily, but that last 20 is being stubborn! The gym is not an option for financial and baby sitter reasons. Does anyone have diet or exercise ideas I can do at home that work and don't cost a lot?

What can I do next?

Not a really popular option it seems but if you go vegan you will have to work to be overweight, plus you get the added bonus of being cruelty free.

Ok so all the advice so far is good. Although I wouldn't go the low carb high protein way cause if you go off that diet even a little the weight will come back. Cardio Cardio Cardio is the way to go. And if you do go that way you will need the carbs for energy. Try your local Goodwill or another thrift store for used workout tapes or DVDs (you will be surprised what you will find there I work at a goodwill trust me). Never underestimate the power of walking or jogging. Just go when he is home. I know it is tough to do that in the winter. If you have stairs in the house try running them a few times. Or instead of walking up the stairs to take something up there run them. Try doing a crunch while bicycling your legs so that your elbows touch the opposite knee. If you are up early enough and are a morning person (which I am not lol) I think there are a few aerobic based shows on TV. Lots of fruits and veggies. Nuts are good too. Cut down on red meat and pork. Watch your processed sugar and calorie intake. Whole grain breads and pastas. And remember: Muscle weighs more then fat!
Now if I could just take my own advice I would be doing well lol. Good luck and let me know how it works out.

Increase your protein intake and really watch your carbs and sugar. Also, Target has some great exercise balls (look like birthing balls) that you can do great core exercises on - lots of videos that you can do in conjunction with an exercise ball too. You can create your own weights at home with soup cans. I hired a trainer after I had my daughter and the best results that I got were from cardio and the exercise ball :) Best wishes :)

I don't know how tight your finances are but I like to do exercise dvds at home. The best one I've done lately is called Turbo Jam. It's a cross between kickboxing, martial arts and dancing. It is an awesome workout! You can check it out either at QVC.com or Beachbody.com. I'm also a HUGE fan of Walk Away The Pounds an inhome walking program. I love all of her workouts (Leslie Sansone, from WATPs) but the one I've been doing the most is her 5 mile one. Nice thing is you don't have to do all 5 miles you can combine it in anyway you want and do as many miles as you have time for. She is also on QVC or you can go to walkawaythepounds.com or lesliesansone.com.

Good luck!

Hi! Congrats on the babies! As of late, my husband and I have made drastic lifestyle changes in order to be healthy, and to raise a healthy son. My son is now 1 year, and we decided to change our eating habits approximately 6 months ago. If you go to Oprah.com or Discoveryhealth.com, you can find links for the Dr. Oz lifestyle plan. It is NOT a diet. This method changes the foods you eat so that you can become healthy. The basic tenents of the plan are five foods/ingredients that you do not consume because your body cannot deal with them, leading to other problems (weight gain, high cholesterol & blood pressure...etc.) They are; high fructose corn syrup, hydgrogenated oils, bleached flour and enriched flour. It sounds awful, but it's not that bad! Basically, you just have to start reading labels and buying foods that aren't chockfull of the bad ingredients. The biggest problem is that all mass-marketed foods have them. We do the majority of our shopping in the organic section becaue those companies use natural ingredients. Case in point, you can still eat a cookie, but make sure there are no bad ingredients in it! We've found that a lot of times store brands are better than name brands. I know you're thinking, so what, does it work? Well, in six months, with no excercise (I can't excercise because of a preexisting injury), my husband has lost about 35 lbs. and I've lost about 25lbs! Oh yeah, and we do not eat any fast food, and don't really eat out much because we're on just one income now, and we've found that it helps a lot because you can control what you eat! Good luck, I hope this helps, and congrats again on the babies!

I'm not sure what your financial situation is, but Weight Watchers is really good - you can buy an "At Home" kit it's a one time cost and you can have it charged to your credit card over 3 months if you'd like, but it gives you all the tools that you would get if you went to the meetings except for the online tools and really all you need is the rules and the weight watchers calculator to calculate points and you're good.

You could also try Winsor Pilates - you can get the tapes for pretty cheap - I think they have a deal for $9.99 on their website, but don't quote me on that.

That fact that you lost so much weight so far is awesome - I have yet to lose any weight after my daughter - I know everything to do and I'm just not doing it - I really need someone to encourage me to just get off my butt and start exercising again.

You are an inspiration!! Keep up the wonderful job - you're son is only 6 months old don't push yourself too hard - you're weight will come off (now if someone could get me to get started on my weight loss).

Take Care,
Mel

Use the exeercise ball when you are on the computer. It works your core while you type! It also keeps babies from crawling up on your chair and "typing" for you. A resistance band is about $5-$8 dollars and it can be used in a very small space and in complete silence while kids are asleep. I use medium resistance.
Cut food intake by 20% and you won't notice the difference. Use smaller plates, smaller cups, smaller spoons. I use black plates to curb appetite. Replace mayo and all other fatty sauces with cream line plain yogurt from trader joe's. It has the same calories for one cup that mayo has for two tablespoons.
Also if you have time for cardio just do it. I do the most ridiculous looking thing-you know the way football players run their feet? Like back and forth really fast (in training) I do those. It cracks my two year old up : )

Gratz on the babies !!
A great idea to burn calories w/o really doing anything is during your daily chores.
When picking up toys dont scoup them all up at once. Squat down for each toy or whatever is on the floor.
Lift your babies above your head a few times in a row. They will love it and it works on your arm muscles.
Lay on your back on the floor with your knees bent like youre gonna do crunches. Situate your baby in a sitting position on your tummy and leaning against your legs. Do "crunch peek-a-boo" everytime you come up make faces or say silly things to the baby. They get attention and you get exercise !
When doing chores around the house, carry a baby in a pack or a sling. The extra weight helps burn cals too.
Try investing in one of the little pedals that sit on your floor infront of a chair. You can put the babys to sleep while "riding a bike" that way. If you have a deskjob, you can even take it with you and sit it under your desk and workout while working :)
Good luck with those stubborn pounds !!

I have been using Arbonne's Figure 8 line and doing some excrsize (ahh spelling looks wrong). Lol www.passion4more.myarbonne.com or www.gofigure8.com you can check it out. I have loved it. I am losing the weight and toning and being healthy. I really love the berry chews for the in between meals, when you feel snacky. With three kids (Mercy 4, Caleb 3, and Katrina 9 months) sometimes in the middle of the day it is to easy to reach for something quick and bad. So the chews and the Going Gone have helped me.

hello, weight loss is always a tough issue. But I know of a gym where you can go for a month no charge. Ladies Premiere Fitness offers coupons for a 30 day free trial....you do not have to purchase a membership...though they will ask, just tell them you want the 30 days. They also have free childcare there at the center. I know there is a few centers around the area...i live in huber heights and there is one here and i know of one in kettering and i believe also in beavercreek. Well good luck.

Hi E.,

I did have the same problem as you where my last 15lbs would not come off (I gained 45lbs w/my daughter). I have finally dropped back down to my before baby weight but it has taken me about 5 months to do it. I work full time so I started exercising in the morning. I have a few workout tapes that have 10 minute workouts on them and I would do the 10 minute workout before I got in the shower in the morning. Then after my daughter went to bed in the evening, I would do another exercise tape and this one would be about 30 minutes long. I specifically have been using the Billy Blanks workout tapes. I also cut back on my junk food. I was very bad about eating fast food and sweets so I cut that out and I also cut out eating alot of cheese, potatoes and white rice. I would eat about 5 small meals a day instead of 3 big ones. In the morning, I would eat oatmeal and tea, I would have low fat yogurt as a snack about 2 hours later and then I would eat my lunch. I would have a piece of fruit as a snack a few hours later then a skinless chicken breast or fish and some vegetables for dinner. I also cut out drinking pop and only drank tea or water. By doing this, I lost about 15 lbs in 5 months. Good luck!
