The Depo Provera Shot and Pregnancy

Hello, I am a mom of six and recently got the depo shot. Two months ago to be exact. I felt funny and had missed a period and so I took a home pregnancy test. It was positive. I took two more that were positive also. I have not considered getting my tubes tied because I have a friend that in the future I am planning on being a surrogate for. I need to know if anyone has known anyone who has gotten pregnant on this form of birth control I have looked into it on the Internet but haven't really found any answers. Are there dangers to the baby because of the hormones? I'm going to the doctor next Wednesday and I'd like to be armed with some info and some questions. I feel pretty crappy and rundown. Some information would really be appreciated. I was really NOT planning on any more of my own, especially when I have two in diapers! Please help!

What can I do next?

Hi! My heart goes out to you! Best wishes with whatever path lays before you. I also am a mom of lots of children, most who are now grown, and a couple of little "late-in-life" babies, and I love it.

I have a really dumb question... Are you sure you are really pregnant? I have not used depo myself, but my daughter has for some years, and I know that her hormones are always a little off whack when she first gets the injection and then again when it it a few weeks away from the next. I just wonder if that could give a false pregnancy reading? It's just a thought...and a totally uninformed one, for what it's worth. We were also told that it takes up to 6-9 months or so initially for the depo to become regulated in one's body.

I wish you the best. If you are really pregnant, congratulations! I know the path will be rough, but someday you'll look back and be ever so thankful that you had that Baby #7. I was that baby #7 myself...and I am so glad to be here! :)

And if you are not pregnant, best wishes with the beautiful family you already have and with the future child you may surrogate, and either way, I hope you begin to feel better soon!

Wow - sounds like you have your hands full! After getting pregnant while on the pill I chose to get the IUD Merena (spelling??). So far so good and no complaints. But as with all birth control they say to be careful for the first few months - as it has to take affect. Hopefully this helps.

L.,

God bless you!

I've been on Depo Provera for over 10 yrs now, and love it. Thank goodness I didn't become pregnant while on it, so have no advice there; I merely wanted to log on to give you moral support & a virtual hug!

Just keep repeating the mantra, "God only gives us what we can handle!" That must be why he's giving you another baby! You must be an awesome mom :>)

On the Depo note; you already know they're the lowest hormone form of BC, so the baby's gonna be fine... google it, talk w/your doc on Weds.

I have a friend who got pregnant on the Depo shot twice actually. The most recent time being just a couple months ago. Unfortunately, it ended up being a miscarriage of twins.

I used Depo for many years and never had a problem - loved it in fact, but after first receiving the shot, and when I started re using it I was told to use a secong form of birth control for the first couple months. I know they tell women to do this who first start taking the pill - these forms of birth control don't start working immediately.

I know that there can be some complications anytime you get pregnant on any birth control, but I was on Depo Provera when I got pregnant with my son. My doc said that there is a higher risk of miscarriage in the first few weeks, and a higher risk of a tubal pregnancy. He told me that generally if you make it past 8-9 weeks then you are usually in the clear.
I did not have any complications during my pregnancy, and my son is now a happy, healthy 9 month old who has been ahead of all his milestones. I have not had any issues here.

Good luck momma.
