Have you seen the movie? If so, please help me. In your opinion a child needs to be how old to see it? I've not read the book or seen the movie so please tell me what you think. Thanks!

What can I do next?

Definitely read the book first -and have the child read it. If the child isn't old enough for the book or to comprehend the book or read it fairly quickly (it's a FAST read even for a kid), then they probably aren't old enough for the movie. I know a number of 10 year olds who saw it and loved it -but they've already read (and can converse about) all three books in the trilogy. My two are still too young to read or see it, but I can see my oldest being ready for it at 10 or 11. It's specifically for the middle school-aged crowd if that helps. I certainly wouldn't dip below age 10.

It's PG13 for a reason. That's the group the books were written for, and seeing it onscreen is even more disturbing.
It's NOT for children.
Read the book and go see it yourself, it's really good! I read the book and saw the movie with my kids, and we loved it, but they are TEENAGERS.

Teenager. And it's one I would personally insist my kids read first, because the books are incredible with loads to discuss, and the movie is "meh". It spoon feeds it on a simple level, cuts out tons of content...is NOT anything like movie versions of Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings quality-wise. I think 14 or 15 (if mature) to read and/or see movie.

It's pretty graphic in it's violence. It depends on the child, of course, but I would think they in general would need to be 13, as it's PG-13. It's got kids killing kids, so you would need to make the judgement about whether or not your kid can handle it.

I read the series and my very mature 10 year old will not be seeing this mivie. You need to either read the book or watch the movie BEFORE decifing if your child she see the movie or read the book.

The PG-13 rating is to be taken seriously. This is for kids 13 and up. If you do not know what it is all about do not send your child to see it.

The books are very good but also are not for younger kids. I would have my child read it at an appropriate age (read them yourself first to see how your child would handle them) and let the movie wait. We are all refusing to see the movie because we all liked the books very much and frankly don't want someone else's vision and casting to mess with our own personal idea of the books, which are much deeper than what a movie can convey.

Don't go on what other say about ages for the movie or the books. Read them yourself and decide based on your child. My daughter was fine with the books at 10 because she already read a lot of action stuff and was aware that it involved kids killing other kids, yet my friend's child who is super-sensitive and is upset by things in books at times is not being allowed to read them yet and she is 11. You know your own child best.

I took my 10yo and he loved it-he reas all of the books as well. howver he is an extremely mature kid for his age. So it really depends on maturity. I wouldn't take a kid under 10 though.

i would say at least 10 or 11, depending on the child and if they have read the books. my son, i'd say probably 12 or 13. the books are a LOT more disturbing. i doubt i'd want him to read the books until older. the movie is pretty watered down.

Oh Myself and my daughter absolutely loved this movie. She is 10. Only part should found scarely without spoiler for you was the dog scene which she covered her ears and eyes. So i'd say when you see the dogs comming out warn her but its near the end.

The movie is rated PG 13 so that's your first clue. Then you know your child and know what she/he can handle if they are younger than 13. If in doubt go see the movie without the kid and judge for yourself.

I saw the movie on Friday and was appalled to see a woman bring in her four kids, with the youngest being about 4 years old! I have a 6 and 3 year old and would not dream of letting them see it. Age 10 seems like a good start, but maturity is important too.

I would highly recommend the child read the book first, as it gives a lot of helpful messages to young adults. Good luck!

I have read it. I have seen the movie. My friend was going to bring her 12 yr old with us when we saw it in the theatre, but did not .... not because the movie was too morbid, but b/c she wanted adult time! A different friend allowed her 5th grade daughter to read the book, but will not allow her to see the movie. She is worried that viewing teens killing teens will desensitize her daughter to such violence.

So for me, eh I dont have a teen/tween. But I am not sure I would take my 9 yr old neice to see it unless her parents allowed her. And I know her parents - they would NOT allow it. I mean yes it's kids killing kids, and there are scenes where you see the dead child on the ground eyes open and dead.... heck I think I am desensitized to it.

btw I totally agree. Book was WAY better than the movie.
