The Name Luke, and Other Boy Names

If our next baby's a boy, my husband really wants to name him "Luke," since he's a physician, and Luke from the Bible was also a physician.

I see his reasoning behind it, but I'm just not excited about the name. I prefer 2 syllables, but don't like "Lucas." "Luke" just sounds so short and flat, even for a Star Wars fan like me ;-)

We already have 3 other Biblical boys names, and tend towards more traditional names.

What about these names? (This is a list of names that my husband's patient's wife gave him. The patient died last year, and he had hand carved name blocks for our other boys, but had finished a few other names before he passed away.)

Jason
John
Danny
Elijah
David
Noah

So What Happened?

If we go with any of the names from the list, we won't alter the spelling, since the carvings are already done. This man was one of my husband's favorite patients, and we were so touched when he carved each of our other boys' names after they were born. That's the only reason we are considering any of the ones from the list--to honor this patient.

Our other kids have some of the names that were mentioned by some of you.

How kind of this man to carve these names for you. It's nice to honor him that way. Good thing he picked some nice names - you have lots of good choices! :)

I love the name Luke. Is this the first time your husband has had such a a strong feeling for a name?

I would honor his request.. But I am one of those people that does not understand why family names have to match each other. Each child is an individual.. Not a post card..

I have a friend that all of their children's first names start with "K" Why?
Her name starts wit a K, but not her husband... They even adjusted t[2 of the names. by changing the C to a K.. Karson instead of Carson. Karmen instead or Carmen.. Why?

I like all of the names that you mentioned. I'm also a big fan of classical names and think any of those are great.

I wouldn't go with Danny, simply because I don't generally go for the nickname of the name being the official name. I like Daniel, and calling him Danny, but feel like he should have the option of the more formal name when he's older if he wants it, especially for business purposes.

Well I am biased because my son's name IS Luke, and we love it!
My husband is Mark, and Luke comes after Mark in the Bible, which we both thought was cool, plus the name means "bringer of light" which I love AND Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) was my very first crush, so it just seemed fitting! But I like all of your other names too, except John, only because it seems TOO simple and generic, like John Doe.

Would your husband be happy with Luke as a middle name? Elijah Luke sounds good. So does David Luke. John Luke is good, too - very solid. John and David aren't among the trendy names right now; I guess Luke is, but all these names have been around so long that they are classic as well as biblical. So it doesn't matter what the name fashion is.

How would any of these combinations go with your last name?

I think Luke is a really cute name. My second choices would be Daniel or John or David. Most people don't even know that Jason is a biblical name. I'm not a fan of Noah for some reason. I have a friend who named her son Abraham and we all call him Abie... I didn't like it at first but it and he grew on me and now he couldn't be anyone else but Abraham.

I LOVE the name Luke. The other choices are lovely as well. My only thought is that some of them can be shortened to a nickname that you may not like as much (David becomes Dave for example). I've also seen "Luca" - Italian, and "Luka" - Greek, both of which I like but are not traditional. Biblical boy names are plentiful -- let us know what you pick!

You can't go wrong with any of the names on your list, they're all just nice names. I have been hearing Luke a lot lately, almost seems trendy. Elijah is my least favorite, don't care for the nickname Eli. If you go with Danny, name him Daniel. I like John the best.

I like the name Luke a lot.

Of the other choices, I like Daniel (Danny) and Noah.

What about Joshua? It's my favorite boy's name, and my son's name. Or Zachary (derived from the biblical name of Zechariah-father of John the Baptist?)

My other biblical faves are: James, Jeremiah, Jonah, Matthew, Michael

Have fun choosing a name!

All good. I would use Daniel not Danny (you could use it as a nickname) and Jonathon (rather than John and call him Jon). You might also consider Michael. I love that you are considering using actual/real names.

I like Luke better than Lucas. But that's me. I love the idea of Luke being named for the Biblical physician -- what a great reason for a name. Much more meaningful than "We just liked it, that's all."

Whatever you pick, check lists of the most popular baby names these days and for the past five to 10 years. All the names you list except maybe John and David are VERY popular names, especially Elijah, Noah and Jason -- I hear those a lot at school. You might want to consider whether you want to choose a name that's not very, very popular -- so your son doesn't say "yes?" when five other moms call his name on the playground!.....

I love Noah!

These are all nice names even Luke. Do you think the 80's movie "Lucas" ruined it for you? It has now grown on me, but I did not like it years ago. It has everything going for it. Traditional yet current, in the Bible, could have a nickname and I also like the doctor connection for you.

If you used Danny, would it really be Daniel or Danny?

Jason it a name that is very popular for my generation (I feel like I have known a lot of guys named Jason, so it was not on my name list).

Of the names that you mention, I like John, Luke, and David the best, in that order. I like that your husband has a significant reason for wanting the name Luke. My only issue with Luke is that it is very popular at least where we live, so I hear it a lot. Noah is also super popular, which is the main reason I don't like it. As for Daniel and Jason, it's entirely anecdotal, but every child I've ever met with either name is horribly ill-behaved. Those kids have kind of ruined those names for me.

I've always loved the name John, and it's not currently that common. Now that I think about it, I don't think I know any little boys called John. It's distinct but not weird. But it's not two syllables.
