The Newest Teether in Our House Is...

Me! I think my wisdom teeth are coming in. Last year, one came through on the bottom behind my molar and now the one on the same side top is coming in. It's constantly uncomfortable - but not unbearable - and is resulting in my jaw being stiff and headaches being frequent.

So my question is: Do any of you have your wisdom teeth? I know a lot of people just get them pulled, but do you have to? Will it cause me any problems to just keep them?

Thanks for sharing your experience with this!

I am able to keep 3 of mine. I have to get one pulled, because it's impacted. The other 3 have plenty of room. All of mine have come through the gums, aside from the impacted one. I have a permanent retainer on the bottom teeth (the impacted one is on the bottom) so I won't have any shifting. I honestly never noticed a lot of pain. I did have some jaw alignment issues for a while, that I suppose could have been from the wisdom teeth. When they are through and can be brushed, aren't impacted, and there is room...they most likely won't give any problems. At least, that's what the dentist told me! You'd really have to speak with a dentist, to be sure.

I think most people don't have room in their mouths for them. If they are giving you problems now, they most likely will continue to. Get checked out by an oral surgeon. It's not as bad as people think to get them removed--sure it's worse for some people. Insurance typically pays towards the surgery. I think we paid $150 for my husbands. I was 14 when mine were taken out so I don't know how much it was for me. Hope you feel better!
ETA: Your teeth can shift & get crooked, so seriously get it checked out! ;)

A dentist will have to answer that for you. Many of us don't have room in our jaws for them (as a result of human evolution) but some do. In our family, three of us had them out and only my stepson was able to keep his.

I had mine removed because my dentist said that they would cause me serious problems if I gave them the chance. I had two really impacted and the other two were already through but all 4 came out. I would tend to think that if they are causing you pain and discomfort with headaches that it will not get better but worse and that you will most likely have to have these useless and stupid teeth removed =(
Good Luck

I have all four of mine. I was told there was plenty of room, so no need to pull them.

I'm 31 and still have my wisdom teeth. Actually I only 3 poking through, so they're not even all the way out. They don't bother me, and my dentist has said that as long as they don't hurt, there continues to be room for them and the pockets that teeth grow from dissolve, I shouldn't need them out. So yes, it's possible to not only get them later than a lot of people, but to keep them too. My dad is 55 and still has his. But do know that the older you are when you have them pulled, the harder your jaw is, which makes the procedure a bit more difficult - as told to me by a dentist many years ago. Good luck - if they're not bothering you, hopefully you'll be one of the lucky ones who don't have to worry :)

You need to have the room in your mouth and let someone make sure they're not impacted. I had all four out at once. Youch!

My daughter had her wisdom teeth all removed nine months ago. The bottom two were impacted and clearly growing towards a nerve in the jaw on her panoramic x-ray. I took her to an oral surgeon. Because some were impacted teeth, the medical insurance is actually billed initially then the dental. My portion was about $900. I also wasn't going to take a chance on the wisdom teeth moving her perfectly straight teeth.

Wisdom teeth are why a lot of teens chew their pens.

I had mine removed by an oral surgeon - 2 badly impacted, and 1 partially and figured I'd get the last one out while they were at it (ins. did not pay for that one). I had no problems after that.

My stepson has all his still. He has a huge jaw. His sister had all hers removed. My husband had all his removed and a couple of molars along the way, too. I never had braces, and the kids did, so pulling/not pulling doesn't seem to matter much with that. My sister had hers removed - all 4 impacted.

So, no, you don't HAVE to, but if they cause you problems, you should. They are hard to clean and don't always come in right.

I had 4 impacted wisdom teeth. It was incredibly painful. They would break through the skin and then go back down and just as the skin on my gum would begin to heal, here they'd come again. My jaws would get swollen and I couldn't eat. It finally got so bad that I had all 4 removed when my daughter was a little baby.
You should check with your dentist. Wisdom teeth can be really weird.
My friends husband was born without any.
Mine were making me sick so they had to go, but some people don't have any problems with them as long as they have room in their mouths for them.

Best wishes.

you don't have to have them pulled unless you don't have enough room in your mouth for them. I had to have all 4 of mine pulled.
