Thinking About Moving to Hinsdale

We are thinking about moving to Hinsdale and I was wondering if anyone had information or advice about the area, schools, parks, and/or services that they would like to share with me - either good or bad. I've lived in the city all of my life, so this move out to the 'burbs is a really big thing for me. Both my husband and I will be commuting to downtown for work.

I think the western suburbs are great. We moved from the city to
La Grange two years ago. Our neighbors are young and fun. Lots of kids around and great public schools. We live two blocks from the train station that my husband uses to commute to the city. It's a 17 minute express. Ironically, the door to door commute is shorter now than when we lived in the city.

There's lots of walk-to shopping in both La Grange, Western Springs, and Hinsdale. The majority of things to do are actually in La Grange though (restaurants, shops, small movie theatre, Trader Joe's, Borders). I don't know if you have your hearts set on Hinsdale, but La Grange is definitely worth checking out and it's closer to Chicago. Also, a heck of a lot more affordable and a fair bit more diverse than Hinsdale.

I wanted to add that overall the taxes are lower in La Grange because it's still cook county whereas Hinsdale is in DuPage. Can you tell I'm advocating my town?? :)

I work for Adventist Hinsdale Hospital, and had my first daughter there, and second child will be born their too. Hinsdale is a beautiful town, great downtown area, good restaurants, good location to shopping - Oak Brook, Yorktown, etc.. I would love to live there, if I could afford it. There are beautiful old homes there, as well as teardowns - but very expensive. You may find more affordable houses in Western Springs or La Grange, which are both great towns too with easy access to the train.

Hi I.,
We just moved to Hinsdale this past Feb. We were living in the southloop for over 10yrs. it was really a big thing for us as well as we are city people. but, now w/ 2 kids my husband said it was time to move, so.. we did alot of research and Hinsdale was our choice, schools are top notch, kids and schools tested on average 90th% many many parks here, there is a nice community center, 2 train stations to the city and very central to both airports as well as downtown. we are near several highways. and if you have yet to visit hinsdale, it is a beautiful neighborhood.
I hope this helps.

Ditto on what Regina said. We live in LaGrange and love it. There are great restraunts in town (more family restraunts than Hinsdale), many parks, great neighbors and minutes to downtown via train.
I have some friends in Hinsdale and they talk about what they call the "hinsdale effect"...things cost more there just because its Hinsdale (for example, lawn care or remodeling).
Don't get me wrong, Hinsdale is nice. We just love our neighborhood.
